The Board of Directors and all stakeholders of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation celebrate 2015 as a truly transformational year in the history of the Foundation. Guided by our mission and in honor of Duke’s 125th birthday, the Foundation embarked on the Duke 125 campaign. The funds generated from the campaign will enable the Foundation to make a greater impact on individuals and organizations that perpetuate the legacy of Duke.

A sincere and heartfelt mahalo to each of you that have contributed to our effort. To date, the campaign has received over $725,000 in contributions and pledges, quickly approaching our goal of $1,250,000! The significance of meeting our campaign goal will be reflected in the Foundation’s ability to have a deeper impact on our local keiki and community.

In addition to the Duke 125 campaign, the Foundation is launching a program to connect ODKF scholarship recipients with local companies and business leaders for internships and career mentorship. Please contact me if you or your company is interested in teaming with the Foundation on this important endeavor.

The Foundation’s scholarship and grant recipients form an impressive, diverse group with varying passions, skills and interests, however, like all of us they share a common bond with the ocean, the sports that Duke loved, and a reverence to the life of Duke Kahanamoku and what he means to Hawaii and the world. Mahalo nui loa for being part of our community and supporting the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

AMBASSADOR OF ALOHARewarding College Bound High School Students

The Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship was created to reward an exceptional college-bound Hawaii high school senior who embodies the Aloha Spirit and character that made “the Duke” such a beloved figure worldwide.

This year’s recipient of the $10,000 Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship is Sarah ‘Alohilani Jenkins of Molokai High School. With a GPA exceeding 4.0 and ranked #1 in her graduating class at Molokai High, Sarah is pursuing her undergraduate studies at Duke University. She was highly regarded on campus for her academic achievements, leadership abilities and her volunteer hours dedicated to her community.

Sarah has a true passion for environmental conservation as evidenced by her expansive commitment to the Molokai Earth Preservation Organization (student led environmental club) and Nene ‘O Molokai (non-profit engaged in water quality testing and habitat management). Furthermore, she initiated, organized and executed a campus wide energy audit at Molokai High School.

Sarah’s success and leadership extends into the swimming pool and ocean. She was the Molokai representative on the Maui Interscholastic League Captains Round Table aimed at addressing league related issues, promoting sportsmanship on campus, and student-athlete leadership development.

"In Hawaii we greet friends, loved ones or strangers with

Aloha, which means with love. Aloha is the key word to

the universal spirit of real hospitality, which makes Hawaii

renowned as the world's center of understanding and

fellowship. Try meeting or leaving people with Aloha. You'll

be surprised by their reaction. I believe it, and it is my creed."

On June 15th the Annual Mahalo Luncheon was held at the Outrigger Canoe Club bringing together some of ODKF’s major donors with many of the scholarship and grant recipients. This luncheon is an opportunity for donors to meet those whose lives they impact through their generosity. In addition, the student-athletes who benefit through the grants and scholarships are able to thank the donors and realize the importance of perpetuating the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku as well as the preservation of the “Duke sports” and their cultural and historical significance to Hawaii within our community.

We are so excited about our new ODKF internship program that will help our scholarship recipients connect with companies in Hawaii. We would like to thank our partners in the program: The Howard Hughes Corporation, Title Guaranty of Hawaii, Inc., J. Kadowaki, Inc., Team Unlimited/XTERRA, Anthology PR, Waikiki Beach Activities, McCabe, Hamilton, Renny & Co., Ltd.

As a result of our generous and loyal donors, ODKF was able to present $178,250 in scholarships and grants to 73 outstanding Hawaii scholar-athletes and non-profit organizations competing in water sports and volleyball. Forty-four outstanding scholar-athletes received $124,750 in college scholarships for the upcoming school year. A total of $53,500 in athletic grants went to 29 awardees, comprised of Hawaii athletes competing in water sports and volleyball

events, along with nonprofit organizations providing water sports and youth development programs in Hawaii.

For the third year, the ODKF Mahalo Luncheon sponsor was McCabe, Hamilton, Renny & Co., Ltd. ODKF would like to express our sincerest mahalo to their management and staff for their generosity in underwriting the cost of the luncheon.

We truly appreciate the support of all of our donors and pledge that their monies are going to the future of Hawaii, as seen in the young people who share our appreciation for athletics and academics.

PERPETUATING DUKE’S LEGACYOver $175,000 Awarded in Grants and Scholarships

As our scholars strive to meet the rising cost of higher education, the Foundation aims to provide the necessary support for our recipients to achieve all of their goals. At the conclusion of this application review, the Foundation awarded $125,000 in need-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors and current college students from across the state. Furthermore, the Foundation awarded nearly $50,000 in grants to organizations and individuals that support our Hawaii waterman community, help develop Hawaii’s best ocean athletes, and connect our local keiki to the ocean and beach activities.

Board Designated FundsSince its inception in 1986, ODKF has been providing support to teams and students that personify the spirit of Duke Kahanamoku. The active stewardship of our Mission, sprouts forth from all who continue to donate, growing through our watermen communities, and lifting our Duke Scholar-Athletes toward their shared success.

In the face of rising costs of education and competition, we all share this opportunity and responsibility, acknowledging the Foundation’s need to sustain a deeper ability to transform the lives of our next ambassadors.

There are 15 Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Board-Designated Legacy Funds for which scholarships and grants are awarded to sporting events and teams, as well as individual scholars and athletes. We offer our sincerest mahalo to the families and friends that continue to honor these tremendous individuals and make these funds possible each year.

WAIKIKI ’S PREMIER OCEAN SPORTS FESTIVAL

Founded by Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation over a decade ago, Duke’s OceanFest continues to grow each year. In honor of Duke Kahanamoku’s legacy, the 14th Annual Duke’s OceanFest was held August 22-30, 2015 on majestic Waikiki Beach with nine days of challenging events.

Mahalo Nui Loa to the OceanFest board of directors, event director and the hundreds of volunteers that make this a successful event. Proceeds of Duke’s OceanFest go back into scholarships and grants given to student-athletes by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation.

The Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame honors those who have contributed an enormous amount of energy and passion to the ocean. On September 23rd, the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation inducted four Hawaii athletes into the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame who are pioneers and visionaries of our time. Nominated by their peers for their

contributions to ocean sports, their commitment to athletics through coaching and program development in addition to tireless service to the community, the 2015 class of inductees truly epitomize Duke’s spirit through their love of the water and through caring for our island community.

DUANE DESOTOBorn and raised in Makaha, this world longboard champion shares his passion and knowledge for the ocean through his non-profit Nā Kama Kai and Aloha Surf Academy, using the ocean to empower our youth.

JOEY CABELLThis Hawaiian surfer, restaurateur and philanthropist is described by the Encyclopedia of Surfing as “arguably the finest all-around surfer of the ’60s, and certainly the decade’s best in international competition.”

WALTER GUILD Veteran waterman has been a force in modern-day outrigger canoe water sports. A champion paddler, he played a key role in the creation of the OC-1 canoe and continues to coach and inspire many.

SOICHI SAKAMOTO A trainer of champions, he coached some of Hawaii’s top swimmers – including many Olympic athletes – and was one of the most successful and recognized swimming coaches in Hawaii’s history.

SHARING OUR RESOURCES WITH THE COMMUNITYWays to Share Aloha: Planned, Pledge, Stocks and One Time Gift

We truly appreciate the support of our donors who are investing in the future of Hawaii, as seen in the young people who share our appreciation for athletics and academics.

The financial statements for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation for the fiscal years ending 2014 and 2013 were audited by CW Associates. These financial statements are available to our members by request. A report has been developed for the foundation’s unaudited financial results for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. These financial statements are now being audited. When that audit is completed it will be available to members by request. Foundation contributions are generally unrestricted and additional funds are raised through activities connected to the Duke’s OceanFest, the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame Awards and royalty payments from TS Enterprises (Duke’s Restaurant) and Malama Pono.

Special thanks to all our volunteers, partners, and sponsors who make ODKF a continued success: Boys and Girls Club, Duke’s Waikiki & TS Restaurants, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Kona Brewing Company, McCabe Hamilton Renny & Co., Macfarlane Foundation, Na Kama Kai, Youth Challenge Academy.
