Technically speaking the term “windlass” refers only to horizontal winches. Ver6cal designs are called capstans. Horizontal windlasses make use of an integral gearbox and motor assebly, with a horizontal shaP through the unit and wheels for chain and/or rope on either side. Sha=’s fric?on bearing Lubrica?on Common Prac?ces Common prac6ces involved in the lubrica6on of the fric6on bearings in windlasses are to use commercial heavy duty general purpose marine greases and to usually relubricate prior every use of the system. For tanker vessels this is usually been done at least twofour 6mes per month. Due to heavy shock loads and water contamina6on, lubricant starva6on, wear, rust & oxida6on are common problems, as seen in the pics below (housing opened aPer 6 months, lubricated at least twice per month, with a heavy duty commercial grease)

Anchor  Windlass

An  anchor  windlass  is  a  machine  (winch)  that  restrains  and  manipulates  the  anchor  chain  or  rope  on  a  vessel,  allowing  the  anchor  to  be  raised  or  lowered.  Technically  speaking  the  term  “windlass”  refers  only  to  horizontal  winches.  Ver6cal  designs  are  called  capstans.Horizontal  windlasses  make  use  of  an  integral  gearbox  and  motor  assebly,  with  a  horizontal  shaP  through  the  unit  and  wheels  for  chain  and/or  rope  on  either  side.

Sha=’s  fric?on  bearing  Lubrica?on  -‐  Common  Prac?ces

Common  prac6ces  involved  in  the  lubrica6on  of  the  fric6on  bearings  in  windlasses  are  to  use  commercial  heavy  duty  general  purpose  marine  greases  and  to  usually  relubricate  prior  every  use  of  the  system.  For  tanker  vessels  this  is  usually  been  done  at  least  two-‐four  6mes  per  month.

Almagard®  3752  -‐  Performance  results

Almagard®  3752  is  a  heavy  duty  smooth  and  extremely  tacky  lithium  complex  grease,  that  stays  put,  will  not  wash  off  (fully  waterproof),  pound  out  or  melt  and  run  even  in  severe  condi6ons.  It  will  greatly  extend  relubrica6on  intervals,  reducing  grease  consump6on,  wear  and  maintenance  costs.  Product  shock  load  performance  can  be  viewd  in  LE’s  “moustrap  demo”.

Almagard®  3752  has  been  tested  in  tanker’s  anchor  windlass  systems  with  great  performance  results.  In  more  detailed,  shaP’s  fric6on  bearings  were  opened  aPer  6  months  of  opera6on,  having  been  lubricated  only  one  6me,  during  the  first  applica6on.  As  seen  in  the  following  photos,  lubricant  remained  in  place,  providing  a  constant  lubrica6on  film  in  both  the  shaP  &  the  housing.  There  is  not  any  abnormal  wear  detected  or  rust  and  oxida6on  as  seen  in  the  same  housing  with  the  commercial  lubricants.  Since  relubrica6on  frequency  reduced  from  at  least  12-‐32  6mes  in  6  moths  to  just  one  ini6al  applica6on,  grease  consump6on  has  been  greatly  reduced.

Cost  Jus?fica?on  -‐  Cost  effec?veness

Although  Almagard®  3752  costs  more  in  a  Kg  per  Kg  comparison  with  commercial  greases,  the  reduc6on  of  grease  consump6on  alone  cost  jus6fies  the  choise,  reducing  the  cost  needed  for  purchasing  grease.  Of  great  importance  is  of  course  the  maintenance  cost  benefits,  deriving  by  its  performance  results,  reducing  the  cost  needed  for  the  maintenance  of  the  windlasses.

Following  pictures  shows  windlasses’  shaPs  &  covers  aPer  6  months  of  use,  without  any  relubrica6on.  Almost  all  grease  remained  in  place  and  no  lubricant  starva6on  observed.

Relubrica6on  with  previous  lubricant  took  place  once  a  week.
