Editor’s Note

Like many people, Governor Adams Oshiomhole is not photogenic. However, up close and with critical inspection, the governor is quite a charmer. Relaxed, with no frown lines and happy to see my team, he looked nothing like what you see in public. He jokes before heading his merry way.

I conclude as he floats away, that this is the story of beauty and the small. For whatever he lacks in height, he more than makes up for in his personality and his beautiful wife. For that she is indeed.

Her Excellency Iara is not only very beautiful on the outside; by the time we left, her inner beauty was even more striking and stayed with me long after I bade farewell.

It’s no wonder the Governor damned every consequence to keep this ‘jewel of inestimable value’.

I exaggerate not. Iara Oshiomhole was truly well brought up. She doesn’t carry her office on her shoulders. She is warm and disarming; nothing like the ‘runs girl’ portrayed on the internet. And, trust me, I have been around long enough to smell one when I see her.

Her Excellency, has since she became the wife of the governor, done quite a lot in Edo State. Under ‘We Care’, she has been able to offer training and support for several families and for IDPs in the state. In so many ways, she has touched the lives of everyone she has come in contact with.

In this chat with me, she elaborates more - talks about home and more important things than respond to malicious gossips. See pp. 8-10.

On our fashion pages, we feature ten designers who participated in African Fashion Week Nigeria which wraps today with a gala night.

Every fashion event is crucial to opening our eyes to the immense potential of fashion in Nigeria. This is why we devote pages to cover fashion events and discourse. We shall bring all the highlights from the AFWN in subsequent issues.

Enjoy!

Iara OshIOmhOle- The Governor’s Wife

REPORTAGE

Her Excellency, Iara Oshiomhole disarmed me when I met her at the Edo State Government House. She literarily lit up the room with her warmth and friendliness; winking at some point to pass a telepathic message

across when it seemed others didn’t get her point. Iara is not your ordinary governor’s wife: first, she is a foreigner; born to a

Cape Verde family and nurtured in the Netherlands. She speaks five foreign languages including German, French and Portuguese. She is a lawyer who became an air hostess ‘because she wanted to experience the world.’

She carries herself with a calm, quiet demeanour - a total contrast from the tar being put on her on the internet; none of which she cared to respond to. You really cannot tell a good book from afar; you must read and get to know its content.

Since becoming the governor’s wife, she has done immense work in the lives of the women of Edo State. In particular, she has made it a point of duty not only to feed the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camped in the state but also train them for life after they leave the camp.

In this interview with Allure, she shares about her family, work and time in the state.

REPORTAGE

A lot of people do not pronounce your name correctly. What is the correct spelling and what does it mean?

My name is Iara; spelt ‘I.A.R.A.’ It doesn’t mean anything. My parents just thought that it was a beautiful name.

Tell us a bit about your up-bringing. How was growing up and family?

I was born in Cape Verde and lived there till when I was three years old. Then, my family moved to the Netherlands where I grew up.

Tell us about Cape Verde? What is the country like? What do they eat and what language do they speak? Are they as multi-lingual and complex as Nigeria?

Cape Verde is a small but beautiful and cute island on the west coast of Africa. We speak Portuguese and Creole and the population is less than five hundred thousand. Cape Verde doesn’t have as much resources like Nigeria (for example, green nature, minerals, gas, oil, etc.) but we have enough and are happy with the little we have. The sun and sea has kept us happy until today.

Are there any similarities between your culture and Nigeria and, specially, Edo State where your husband is from?

Yes, there are similarities. We eat yam and plantain in Cape Verde. Family is also important just like it is in Nigeria. Also, I like to believe that the people from Cape Verde are warm and welcoming like the Nigerian people.

What was your impression of Nigeria before you met his Excellency and how does it compare with what you discovered when you came to live here?

You know the media can be quite negative but, fortunately, Nigerians have proved them wrong. They are warm and very friendly. Nigeria is a very beautiful country. I have never seen a country where the green (nature) is so lush. Nigeria is truly blessed.

What challenges have you come across as you work towards improving the lives of the people?

The challenge has been the fact that I have not been in Nigeria long enough to know all the challenges which the country has but I’m very lucky to have Edo State women to inform, explain and tell me anything that I

need to know. They have been so helpful to me.

What has changed about you since becoming the first lady of Edo State?

I get to attend a lot of events and travel to many parts of Nigeria. I really enjoy meeting different people every day.

How did you finally acclimatize in the state and what do you like most about the people?

What I find amazing is the fact Nigerians are naturally happy people; despite the circumstances, they sing, dance and enjoy life. They are eternally positive about the future. That, to me, is a blessing from God.

You will soon vacate the government house. What will you miss most and what legacy will you be leaving behind?

We will always be a part Edo State. If I miss anyone or anything, I will just go there or visit that person. I will never be far away from Edo State.

How do you want to be remembered? And, after the state house, what next?

My husband has done so much for Edo State. I’m sure no one will ever forget what he has done. And for me, just remember me as a kind-hearted person that wants the best for everyone around me.

What is your project for the people of Edo State and how much has it impacted on the lives of the citizen?

I have several projects that I established since I came; all the projects are through ‘We Care Trust Foundation’. We Care Trust is a non-profit organisation. The trust functions under a charity, welfare and advocacy auspices with the following but not exhaustive interest units: girl-child educational development, orphanage welfare, infant and maternal health advocacy, environmental responsibility and awareness, recycling and regeneration, skill acquisition, and women empowerment.

There are already several orphanages operating in the state. How exactly do you work with them?

We set up a task force on orphanages and special duties which was inaugurated with intervention groups for health, education and social work, maintenance, documentation and legal matters to give assistance to the orphanages. The aim of the task force is to ensure that orphanage homes in Edo State are well managed

and the children in care are treated with the dignity they deserve while the objectives are to assess the infrastructural needs of the orphanages and monitor the welfare of the children in care.

The assignment of the task force was to: pay frequent unannounced visits to orphanage home to assess children welfare, recommend infrastructural support required in the orphanage homes and provide ad-hoc activities/projects to enhance the well being of the children. I understand you feed the IDPs daily and set up training for them. Tell me more about that.

Yes, I do feed them daily. I call the scheme ‘Project Focus’. The first edition was to empower 36 young individuals selected from the 18 local government areas within the state in different skill acquisition programmes including events planning and decoration, fish farming and cake baking.

The success of Project Focus–36 encouraged me to start a skills acquisition programme at the IDP Uhogua Camp. We conducted a needs assessment in conjunction with the camp community through the co-ordinator on how to motivate, enrich and empower them rather than just provide food stuff and other basic materials which we are still committed to providing. The thinking was to prepare them for a life outside the camp to enable them become self-reliant.

The second edition of the “We Care Trust” Project Focus-IDP Uhogua Camp Skill Acquisition Training & Youth Empowerment Scheme was held between 1st April to 14th April, 2016 and we tried to ensure that all relevant segments of the camp community were adequately captured.Project Focus IDP (1st phase) skill acquisition training was for 160 persons and was tailored towards the following areas of interest:• Fish Farming & Vegetable Cultivation• Food Production & Packaging (Dry Non-Perishable Food)• Creative Arts & Tailoring• ICT Basic Computer Training.

I was fully aware that not all in the camp could participate in the various training programmes. Therefore, a sports summer camp was established where others would have the opportunity to sharpen their skills (with state coaches) in football, volleyball,

table-tennis etc. for everyone else to participate in other activities during the period. All the training materials like gas cookers, laptops, sewing machines, fish ponds, sports equipments etc. were consequently donated to the camp after the training.

Finally, my last project is the Benin City Clean Market Initiative. This initiative, in conjunction with the market women leaders, is aimed at ensuring that markets are kept clean, curb bad habits of littering and to encourage environmental responsibility and awareness.

You seem to have done so much in such a short time. What is it that motivates you in your work?

I have always worked. From the standard jobs that we all have as teenagers - like baby-sitting the neighbour’s child at the age of 12 to working at special need homes. During law school, I worked at a law office and even travelled the world as an air hostess. Working hard is a part of my character which I enjoy and now working with the less privileged people in Edo State is a privilege in itself because despite their circumstances, they are happy people; they truly bring joy to my life and I want to ensure I bring joy to theirs.

What is your routine like as first lady?I wake up at 7.30a.m. and prepare myself for work

and have breakfast with my husband. I start in the office at 9a.m. Then, I have meetings and events during office time till 5.30p.m. I’m normally home before 6p.m., take a shower, relax myself with a nice book or I will be on the internet reading travel blogs until my husband comes home. He is very hard working and often comes home late.

A former first lady and senator has been nominated as the first female presidential candidate in America. How do you feel that a woman might become the most powerful person in the world?

This is wonderful! I have always believed that we women can do it all; we work as hard as men and, sometimes, even harder because we also have to take care of the family. A female presidential candidate is a step forward, showing us women what we always knew; we face the world with our heads held high and we carry the universe in our heart.

Generally, do you think women, especially in Africa, should be more active in politics?

Increasing women’s representation in government can empower women and achieve gender parity. Because we are the primary caretakers of children, we have a more prominent role than men in advocating for children; which is very important especially in this part of the world where children younger than 18 are a large percentage in Africa’s population.

What is you hobby? What books do you relax with? I love books. In the Netherlands, I use to spend at

least 70% of my days in the library. I love the fact that you can become another person for the moment... You can get into the character of a book. So, every time you get to be someone else. At this moment, I’m reading a Dutch book called “The Diary of Anne Frank”. This book is a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and a testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family left their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. And, of course, I love music in general. I guess everybody does.

Do you enjoy movies? What types of movies do like? Does Nollywood appeal to you?

I will tell you a secret. I never watch television. Since the age of 14, television has not been a part of my life. However, the news is always on in the house but we don’t normally watch movies or other programmes.

What is your favourite Nigerian food? Plantain! I can eat plantain everyday.‎

What’s your philosophy of life?Treat others as you would want them to treat you.

Finally, a word for the women of Edo State.Edo State women are some of the most hard working

women I know. I admire them so much. May God continue to bless them and their families.

...Treat others as you would want them to treat you.

event. Whether its bi-weekly coffee/drink or once-a-month dinner, devote yourself to never flaking. You’ll always have something to look forward to, and the regularity of the plans makes it easier to plan around other commitments.make you, the giver, feel.

BE RANDOMEngaging in random acts of kindness is one of the most genuine and gratifying ways to say thinking of

you or you’re my favorite human to a friend. If you find yourself with a few moments to spare, send something to your friend or if you find something she has been looking for buy it and send it to her. It’s a thoughtful way to be in touch, and you’ll even be amazed by how good these types of small gestures

GET DIGITALText, Face Time, Snap chat, Instagram, Facebook, BBM, Whats app: It’s all fair game. You might initially think that communicating digitally is superficial, but times are surely changing. For example, talking on Google Chat is actually not the worst way to hear how your friend’s day is going while you’re both at your computers, and it’s sometimes an easier way to stay connected and be there for each other than calling or grabbing coffee.

Hope this helps! Let me know what surprised you as a new parent. I’d love to hear from you email me - [email protected]

How to Be a Better Friend, Even When Life Gets Crazy

Just don’t let your messenger take the place of real-life bonding. Also instagram is now our new magazine tagging a friend in a comment to start a conversation is also a good way to keep engaged with your mate.

THINK BIGAs you get older, the big events—weddings, baby showers, and the like—are almost easier to plan for than quick catch-ups. Especially if you and your friends live in different places or live vastly different lives, having something festive on the calendar far in the future (like a reunion or annual weekend trip or staycation) is easy and fun to plan for. Make a point of scheduling a special event yearly with your nearest and dearest.

TAG ALONGWe all multitask—it’s become second nature these days. So, why not turn your daily routine into an opportunity to catch up with friends? If you’re running errands or heading to an exercise class, check with a friend to see if they care to join. Travel to and from wherever you’re going together, and you’ll have even more time to hear what’s new.

Most of the cosmetic procedures done on the face are geared towards either reversing or slowing down the natural effects of aging. These effects include loss of fat from the face, descent of fat from gravity pulling the fat down into the cheeks or jaws, and loosening and folding of the skin often seen as wrinkles. Above the eyelids, we see forehead wrinkles between the eyebrows, popularly referred to as the eleven “11” lines or the forehead “frown lines” that run across the top of the forehead. These lines are caused by normal contraction of muscles of facial expression in conjunction with relaxation of the skin. These muscles allow us to show sadness, anger, fear and other emotions facially. There are also smile lines at the corners of our eyes which are expressed when we smile. As we age and our skin starts to relax and these muscles are used over and over again, some of those lines form permanent creases in the skin and make us look like we are permanently angry or sad. This is one of

the reasons why we see patients come in earlier and earlier at younger ages for “preventative” procedures to attack these muscles BEFORE they start forming those lines and then becomes more difficult and more invasive to treat.

All of these muscles are considered expendable

because their loss only prevents the patient from certain facial expressions, but does not stop the patient from normal functions...eating, drinking, opening and closing the eyes, etc. Therefore, all the measures to treat these lines either paralyzed the muscles temporarily, cut them permanently, or leave the muscles alone and stretch the skin out to get rid of the wrinkles.

Cutting the muscles or stretching skin requires surgery. The forehead lift, brow lift, mini face lift and facelift are examples of some of those procedures. The question is do we always need surgery? Are there safer and less invasive ways of reversing the signs of aging? This is where BOTOX and FILLERS come in..the needle instead of the knife!

Botox is a chemical that paralyzes muscles by blocking the neurotransmitter that communicates between the nerve endings and the muscles. Its effect is local and limited to the muscle it’s injected into. It is a safe and very effective way to freeze the muscles that cause wrinkles and folds. Its only drawback is that you can’t freeze muscles that you need. That is why, IN GENERAL, we use Botox for wrinkles above the eyes. Freezing muscles below the eye can cause problems with smiling, talking, drooling, inability to close or open the eyes properly etc.

DRINK MAINlY WATER Sports or energy drink, fruit smoothie, or a bottle of soft drink — each serving contains about 100 calories or more. Yet, these beverages don’t satisfy you the way 100 calories of food does, so they’re a waste. Other liquids may be high in sodium and carbohydrates, which trick your body into retaining water, puffing you out.Water, on the other hand, has zero calories and carbs and little to no sodium, making it the perfect slim-down drink. And strangely, it actually helps flush out excess water weight as well as jump-starts your metabolism. If it’s just too boring, add lemon wedges or mint leaves.

There are many reasons why it is important to drink water, especially if you want a quick weight loss:• Initial weight loss is largely due to loss of water, and you need to drink an adequate amount of water in order to avoid dehydration.• The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat-burning process.• Burning calories creates toxins (think of the exhaust coming out of your car), and water plays a vital role in flushing them out of your body.• Dehydration causes a reduction in blood volume; a reduction in blood volume causes a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles; and a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles can make you feel tired.• Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and it lubricates your joints. Proper hydration can help reduce muscle and joint soreness when exercising.

• A healthy (weight loss) diet includes a good amount of fiber. But while fiber is normally helpful to your digestive system, without adequate fluids, it can cause constipation instead of helping to eliminate it.• Drinking water with a meal may make you feel full sooner and therefore satisfied eating less. Note, however, that drinking water alone may not have this effect. In order to feel satiated (not hungry), our bodies need bulk, calories and nutrients.

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCESS KATHY:

You have probably heard that you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. How much water you actually need depends on your weight, level of activity, the temperature and humidity of your environment, and your diet. Your diet makes a difference because if you eat plenty of water-dense foods like fruits and vegetables your need to drink water will be diminished. You can do some research and use a calculator and

HOW MUCH WATER SHOUlD I DRINK?

measuring cup if you like, but nature’s pretty good at letting you know the right amount to drink. When you drink enough water, your urine will usually be pale yellow, though vitamin supplements and antibiotics can discolor it. On the other hand, you shouldn’t need to run to the bathroom too frequently. When in doubt, drink a little more.Do not worry that drinking water will give your body a bloated look. There are a number of causes of water retention, including consuming too much salt. But drinking water is not one of them.It is possible to harm yourself by drinking too much water, but it takes quite an effort. Either through obsessive-compulsive behavior or extended athletic activity, drinking large amounts of water can dilute the electrolytes (sodium and potassium) in your blood to the point that it interferes with brain, heart and muscle function. Athletes compound the problem with the loss of sodium (salt) through sweating, but can drink electrolyte replacement drinks.

1. Try replacing a single meal with pure water. If you have never fasted, take small steps to prepare your body for the challenge of fasting. 2. Consider skipping lunch and just drinking plan water or add juice of fresh lemon.3. Try a 24-hour water fast. Prepare for 7 days before a 24-hour fast. Start by removing foods and drinks high in sugar, fat, and caffeine 7 days before you intend to begin your water fast. 4. Replace unhealthy foods with lean proteins, salads, and fresh produce. Increase your water intake each day until you are comfortable consuming at least a half-gallon each day. 5. Consider taking herbal supplements to prevent water intoxication. (PLEASE SEEK EXPERT CARE FOR THIS)6. Sip OOLONG TEA for breakfast and for lunch. Any time you feel discomfort or hunger pains, drink additional water. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to the oolong tea to add some flavor if desired.

Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, came alive penultimate Saturday when it played host to important personalities and movie stars across the African continent and beyond. The event was the twelfth edition of Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held at the Dr. Obi Wali Event Centre, Port-Harcourt. Mike Ezuruonye and popular South African radio personality, Kgopedi Lioane, were hosts at the event.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, led dignitaries to the event which, although with few hitches, was a memorable show for the year.

Top winners at the awards ceremony, this year, were Daniel K Daniel, Thishiwe Ziqubu, “Meet the Parents”, “Dry”, “Soldier Story”, and “Tell Me Something New”.

Veteran actors were appreciated for their contributions to the Nigerian film industry. Joke Silva and her husband, Olu Jacobs, were honoured with AMAA Life Time Achievement Awards. An emotional Silva could not hide her joy as she spoke: “We didn’t know this was coming. Peace just told us she needed our support and for us to be at the awards. She didn’t tell us about this at all. We are grateful,” she said breaking into tears.

Richard Mofe-Damijo was also honoured with the AMAA Life Time Achievement Award; an award he dedicated to the children struggling on the streets of Warri.

Hilarious Port Harcourt comedian, Arinze Baba, took to the stage to share rib-cracking jokes that sent the audience laughing. Yinka Davies took the audience into the heart of her music with her powerful voice and performance. With the night dragging on, Harry Song would later charge the hall with the performance of his hit song, ‘After the Reggae Play Blues’. This brought the audience back to life as most of them stood on their feet, dancing to the song. His performance, no doubt, made the night a most memorable one.

Here are some scenes from the event.

Veteran saxophonist and multiple-award winning Nigerian international jazz artiste, Mike Aremu, held the fifth edition of his annual jazz concert tagged ‘Sax Appeal’ on 26 June, 2016 at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos.

This edition featured multi-Grammy award winning American singer-songwriter, Indie Arie, alongside Nigeria’s King of Soul, Timi Dakolo, and Nigerian R&B singer and songwriter, Praiz.

The world class show kicked off with Isaac Gerald serenading guests with his strong vocals before the man of the moment, Mike Aremu, stepped on stage and blew our minds with unbelievable sounds from his saxophone.

Next was Nigerian R&B songwriter, Praiz, who rocked us with covers like ‘Sexual Healing’, ‘All of Me’ and his hit song, ‘Sisi’. Then came Grammy awards winner, Indie Arie, who took over the show as she appeared on stage with her white and green attire that got guests at the event excited. The American singer performed songs like ‘My Hair’, ‘Brown Skin’ and our own Tiwa Savage’s ‘If I Start to Talk’ and Simi’s ‘Love Don’t Care’. It was a night of great music, awesome performances and beautiful people.

‘Sax Appeal’ has featured the likes of Kenny G, Yolanda Brown, Judith Sephuma, Kunle Ayo, Jessy Jay, Agboola Shadare, Yinka Davies, Tosin Martins, Bez, Cobhams and Waje amongst others.

A couple of weeks ago, we saw the fabulous “Summer 2016 Collection” campaign photos from Nigerian fashion brand, DOS Clothing Company. On June12th, the brand hosted fashion lovers to an unveiling to celebrate the new collection. The event took place at the brand’s flagship store located at 30 Norman Williams Street, Off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Debola Obanikoro, CEO of DOS, created a relaxed atmosphere for like-minded ladies to network while they had a fun day browsing and shopping the new collection consisting of trendy, edgy and modern pieces.

In attendance were Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, Jennifer Obayuwana and fiancé, Peter, Akunna Nwala, Freda Francis, Tope Abiola, Dupe Olusola, Jenevieve Aken, Fatima Obanikoro, Ngozi Akintujoye, Ozzy Agu and many other fashion lovers and socialites.

Premium Penthouse Soiree powered by Bankhead Entertainment and Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka treated guests and revelers alike to another evening of merriment at its trademark ‘Sunday Party Grill at the Pent’ which took place at Cova Rooftop, Mega Plaza, Victoria Island, Lagos.

From the music booming through the speakers to the delicious grill menu waiting to be savoured, the night was beyond doubt a true celebration as guests partied hard all night and had a swell time.

Celebrities such as Davido, Uti Nwachukwu, DJ Spinall, MTV Base VJ Ehiz and DJ Shawty alongside many other beautiful guests were sighted having a good time.

The thrill of the grill is never ending; so, for those who missed this one,no worries. It takes place every Sunday at the serene ambience of Cova, Mega Plaza, Victoria Island, Lagos.
