November is a month of remembrance for the Knights of Columbus. During this time we remember our faithfully departed brothers, along with all the faithfully departed. As we move through November please plan to attend our deceased members mass on Thursday evening November 6th at St. Mary's church in Rock Island. Further details can be found in huge upcoming events in this newsletter. November is not only a month to remember our lost brothers, but to pray for their repose. We are all human, and I doubt any of us is taking the direct route to heaven. We all will one day be hoping for all the graces that our loved ones can send our way. As we attend all saints mass let us keep in mind all of our loved ones who have preceded us. November is also another where the Knights kick off another appeal that is near to our hearts. This month we are selling raffle tickets to support vocations. The financial assistance that we offer to our seminarians is always appreciated. The raffle tickets we sell return a 60 percent profit directly to our council.....oh, and you could win up to $10,000 as well. One of our Allouez brothers won the grand prize just a few years ago. So keep in mind those who have preceded us into glory, and let's sell some raffle tickets so we can help a new generation of religious to guide the next generation into eternal glory. Please plan on attending our December social with your significant (for most of us that means our better half) other and be prepared to enjoy a wonderful meal with your fellow Knights and their guests. We ask that you bring a gift that will be shared will the children who might otherwise not enjoy their Christmas. It is such a blessing to be able to know that we are helping a child enjoy Christ’s birth with a gift we have provided. Council.

MAY HER SOUL, AND ALL THE SOULS OF

    THE FAITHFUL, REST IN PEACE.

    DEACON’S QUESTION BOX

    Bodily Participation at Mass –Bowing

Last month, we looked at bowing and

genuflecting, the difference between them, why we

do either, and when we bow versus genuflect. This

month, we want to focus more closely on the

    bodily act of bowing.

There are two kinds of bows; a simple bow of

the head and a profound bow of the body.

When you pass by a Church, bow your head and

make the Sign of the Cross to honor the Real

Presence of Christ in the tabernacle.

You should bow your head any time you hear

the Name "Jesus". Note that "Christ" is His title,

meaning "Anointed One" and there is no need to

bow the head at just the mention of the word

"Christ". Men should remove their hats and bow

their heads when passing a church or when His

Name is spoken; this practice is for both inside and

outside of Mass. All Catholics should bow their

heads at these times even if you're having a casual

conversation with someone as you pass a church or

mention His Name. If you are outside, you

actually are supposed to bow your head, removing

your hat if you are a man.

Not commonly known and practiced: any time

you hear "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit mentioned

together; any time you hear the name of Mary; and,

during Mass, when the name of the Saint in whose

honor the Mass is being celebrated, you should

    bow your head.

    mailto:[email protected]

  • A profound bow is the bending the entire body

at the waist, touching the knees with the palms of

the hand. That bow is used when the deacon asks

the priest for a blessing before reading the Gospel.

I mentioned last month that the profound bow is

appropriate when you pass in front of the altar

when the Blessed Sacrament is not in the

    Sanctuary.

Other times when a profound bow would be

appropriate would be at the Aspérges at Mass when

the priest sprinkles the congregation with holy

water, when the Deacon, Priest, or Altar boy

incenses the congregation during the Mass, and

when the priest and Cross walk down the aisle

    before and after Mass.

Try it next time you pass in front of the altar

(that is, if the Blessed Sacrament is not there).

Bend right in two, all the way down; slowly,

reverently. It is the Lord Himself you are greeting.

Feel free to drop me a question for this column.

Questions may be dropped off on the head table at

a Council Meeting or sent via email to Deacon

    RUSS SWIM, Assistant Chaplain,

    [email protected], phone 786-3097.

    BELL RINGING 12/04

The Rock Island Knights of Columbus will once

again be doing some "Bell Ringing" for the

Salvation Army to assist with the purchase of food

and clothing for families during the Christmas

season. The Knights have been involved for a

number of years with this community activity. We

will be "Bell Ringing" at the Rock Island Hy-Vee

Store from 10:00 am thru 8:00 pm on Thursday,

December 4th. This means the Salvation Army

will NOT have to pay someone at this location on

that day. I will be looking for Ten Knights to

volunteer for a "one hour time slot"! Can you

donate one hour to help a family have a better

Christmas? If you have a good winter coat and

gloves, the Salvation Army will provide the "Bell

and Red Kettle!" Call me (309) 786-9625........let's

    do this together. Thank you.

    ROUND TABLE SUCCESS STORY

Allouez Council is a community based Council

whose membership is open to all qualified men in

Rock Island’s St. Mary’s, Sacred Heart or St. Pius

X Parish. The Council presently meets at St. Pius

but could meet at any of the three Parishes or in

another facility such as their previously owned club

    rooms.

As a community based Council, Allouez is

responsible for offering its services to the Pastors

of all three Parishes under a program called Round

Tables. It was under this Round Table concept that

the Allouez Council undertook the project of

helping St. Pius rebuild its parish wide Blood

    Program.

St. Pius’ first blood mobile was held in April

1976 with 126 donors recruited by members of the

Human Action Committee that was heavily

supported by members and families of the Allouez

Council. As with many first time programs, many

were recruited but many were deferred for various

reasons and no-shows. In the end 91 units of blood

were collected which was deemed a huge success.

For years subsequent semi-annual blood mobiles

were equally successful with the most successful

    one netting 114 units.

The Parish blood program is fortunate to have

great facilities in its Farrell Hall or Jordan gym to

hold its blood draws. Many associated with the

program will recall setting up to accommodate

those 121 prospective donors required “hauling” all

of the required equipment down and up from the

former parish hall in the basement of the school.

The Allouez Council is pleased with its initial

efforts of helping to rebuild St. Pius’ 38 year old

    program.

Louie Alongi and Fred Luckenbill, Co-

    Coordinators

ST. PIUS X BLOOD DRIVE SUCCESSFUL –

AGAIN Allouez Council’s work at helping to rebuild the

Blood Donor program at St. Pius had yet another

successful blood mobile with 48 units of blood

collected from the 50 donors who were scheduled.

It is gratifying to see the number of multiple gallon

donors who continue to be the back bone of the

program. However, as important are those who are

first time donors who are always in demand when

known donors can no longer donate for

    various reasons.

The Allouez Council recognizes and thanks our

Grand Knight, Josh Brueggen for donating his 8th

unit of blood or his first gallon. We also recognize

Pat Kernan on achieving the donation of his 32nd

unit or his 4th gallon of blood. Additional long

time, multiple gallon donors will be recognized in

    future issues of the Abstract.

We thank Ingrid Bogdanowicz, Michael Egan,

Sheryl Lackey and Michael Roman who donated

    for the first time.

Our MVRBC consultant wrote, “At the end of

the day, we collected 48 units of blood meaning up

    mailto:[email protected]

  • to 144 patients in local hospitals benefited from

your efforts. This amazing gift was given to

patients because of Knights’ efforts and that is an

amazing thing to be a part of. We saved lives!”

Louie Alongi and Fred Luckenbill, Co-

    Coordinators

SUPPORT VOCATIONS AND WIN $10,000!! Support vocations of young men and women

and possibly win $10,000 in the process. It was but

a couple of years ago that that was the case for one

    of our members.

The 2014 Vocations Support Program Raffle is

Underway and members of the Allouez Council

and Friends should have already received a letter

and book of tickets. This project provides direct

assistance to Seminarians and Postulants who must

pay for books, computers, auto upkeep and

personal needs while developing their vocations.

In additional the net proceeds generated by the

Allouez Council through this raffle also provide

direct financial support for two Seminarians it has

adopted. The Council is pleased to note that one of

its sponsored Seminarians will be ordained to the

Priesthood next spring and Council members are to

be invited when he says his first Mass.

The fund drive ends on November 28th and all

returns must then be to the State Offices before

December 6th, the date of the official drawing.

    Therefore, please respond promptly.

It is realized that the Council just completed its

ID Drive, but both of the projects meet critical

needs and it is hoped that you would be generous in

your support. Please call Fred Luckenbill the

Project Coordinator at 309-794-9085 if you have

questions or need extra books of raffle tickets.

    I.D. DRIVE TID-BITS/THANKS

I have been asked a number of times, "how did

the Council do on the I.D. Drive?" We did very

good again this year thanks to both volunteers and

the direct donations. The NET TOTAL= $10,065

will be distributed. Now for the tid-bits: 160

volunteers put in 320 hours Friday and Saturday.

This does not include the Sunday volunteers from

the local parishes, who collected at masses. All the

funds collected at the parishes ($857) will be

designated to S.P.E.C. in addition to their normal

share. Thanks to Fred Luckenbill who alone

coordinated all the efforts for the parish collections

and the direct mail donation requests. Glenn

Wells, Jim Wieland, and Dave Cray did all the leg

work looking after the needs of all the volunteers in

Rock Island and the three Moline border locations.

These three Knights worked 12 - 14 hours each day

(not included above). The following Knights

volunteered for two shifts (4 hours): Bob

Lawrence, Red Pearson, Rick Sanforth, Kevin

Houser, Dale Gradel, Paul Egan, and Bob Milas.

Fred Luckenbill worked three shifts (6 hours).

Again, thanks to all the volunteers, especially those

who did double shifts. Glenn, Jim and Dave who

made it happen, in so many successful ways,

thanks for all your efforts to help during my

absence. Thanks to my good friend Fred who

assisted me in getting the I.D. Drive details

together for another outstanding Drive to help

those nine agencies, help our Special Persons. May

God Bless all of you. Thank you.

    COLUMBUS DAY DINNER

    AWARD PRESENTATIONS

Good Evening……one of the more enjoyable

duties of the position of Grand Knight for me was

to be able to present at our monthly meetings the

Knight of the Month and the Family of the

Month certificates to whom I thought had shown

exceptional leadership as Knights of Columbus

each month. I reserved these honors for those

Knights that for the most part, chaired or

organized the various programs that we sponsored

each month, because that required the most effort

    and dedication.

And of course each year at our Annual

Columbus Day Dinner, we honor a Knight of the

Year, a Senior Knight of the Year, and a Family

of the Year with a Certificate & and an engraved

trophy or plaque to those whom exhibited the most

dedication to chairing various programs or projects

    during the past year.

All three of the honoree’s I have chosen to receive

these honors tonight have received various &

similar honors in the past, but I do not apologize

for choosing them again this year for these honors,

for they are the Knights that continue to exhibit the

most dedication to Allouez Council’s cause.

Although they presented some resistance to

receiving these honors again, I encouraged their

reception, because year in and year out they

volunteer to chair or organize the majority of the

various programs that we have, and without them, I

believe our Council would be less effective in our

Catholic Community and our community at large.

I would say that they all have Old World

Qualities and Generous Character. They are all

mentors to me and I thank them all for their

dedication and leadership example to the rest of the

    Knights of Allouez Council.

Please give each of them a warm recognition

the next time you see them.

    Knight of the Year

    Award: Louie Alongi

    Brother & Sir

Knight Louie Alongi became a Knight of

    Columbus in 1977,

    making him a member of

    the Knights of

Columbus for thirty-seven years. On August 9,

    2012, Louie recruited his 100th

    member into the

Knights of Columbus, Allouez Council #658; and

was honored last year at the 115th

    Annual Illinois

State Council Convention with a Resolution

commending his Centurion recruiting efforts read

    on the Convention Floor.

Sir Knight Louie Alongi has held various

offices at the Council level including Deputy

Grand Knight & Grand Knight twice. Once for

two years, and the second time for four years, and

most recently has served as Trustee for our

Council for the past three years. He is an

Honorary Life Member of the Knights of

Columbus. This will be the fifth time Louie has received

the High Honor of Knight of the Year, his family

was Allouez Council Family of the Year in 1987,

and he was awarded Sir Knight of the Year,

    Father Bader Assembly 4th

    Degree in 1994 &

again in 2004, as well as being Past Faithful

Navigator. Sir Knight Alongi has served as District

Deputy & Membership Coordinator for the

Illinois State Council covering the Peoria Diocese.

He has been nominated and received the High

Honor of Knight of Knights Award of Peoria Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, and has

received the Illinois State Council Family of the

Year Award. He has been nominated for Illinois

State Knight of the Year several times in the past

and again for Fraternal Year 2013-2014.

Louie’s favorite programs are the Civic Awards

Night, which he has chaired since it started 35

years ago, and the Intellectual Disabilities Drive,

which is dear to his heart, and I believe, the

original reason for joining the Knights of

Columbus. Louie loves children and volunteers to

read to them every week at Skip-A-Long Day Care.

What a treat they have in Louie Alongi!

SK Alongi has organized and chaired the

Annual Spelling Bee at Jordan Catholic School with the help of his daughter Jennifer, for many

years. He has Co-chaired the Annual Knights of

Columbus /Italian American Dinner for years as

well as representing the Italian American Society

as President, concurrently. Louie chaired the

Abstracts Advertising effort for many years,

providing donation revenue to help cover the cost

of the newsletter printing. Louie has most recently

co-chaired the Knights of Columbus Semi-

Annual Blood Drive at St. Pius X Parish in

efforts to try to rebuild the number of donors to

    help others in need.

SK Alongi has fulfilled the duty of Chairman

for just about every Directorship in the Knights of

    Columbus Allouez Council, including

    Community, Church, Youth, Membership, and

  • most recently served on the council retention

committee as Director. This year Louie was

nominated as Citizen of the Year of the City

Rock Island, Individual Category and led this

year’s Annual RI Labor Day Parade.

Louie has done all these things for many years,

but continues to do them year in and year out,

including this past Fraternal year! He exemplifies

    the principles of the Knights of Columbus;

Charity, Unity, and Fraternalism that our Founder

the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney had

    envisioned for our Order.

Louie Alongi has a great Life Story, and I am

glad to call him my friend, my mentor, and a great

Leader of the Allouez Council and in the Knights

of Columbus! I am honored and pleased to present

the Allouez Council 2014 Knight of the Year

    Award tonight, to Louie Alongi.

Thank you Louie Alongi for all that you have

    done and continue to do!

Award four times and was honored by two Third

Degrees. He was honored as a Knight of Knights

in 1996 by the Peoria Diocese Chapter of the

Illinois Knights of Columbus. In 2009, he was

named “State Knight of the Year” by the Illinois

    State Council.

Sir Knight Casey was accepted onto the 4th

degree on February 28, 1960 when he joined

Loras Assembly in Davenport, Iowa. In 1985, he

transferred to the newly formed Father Edward J.

Bader Assembly #1922 in Rock Island, becoming

of Commerce, a Past President of the Rock Island

Kiwanis Noon Club and. Chairman of the

Financial Committee of the National Workers

Compensation Reinsurance Pool. Sir Knight Casey has been active in his parish,

St. Pius X Church, where he has served several

terms on the Parish Council. He chaired the

Human Action Committee and, with Father Mark

DeSutter, formed the St. Vincent DePaul Society

in the Parish. For many years he manned the St.

Vincent DePaul food pantry at St. Pius X Church.

He has served as an extraordinary minister of the

Eucharist and, with his wife, visited patients in the

hospital. He serves as an usher at the 11:00 a.m.

Mass at St. Pius X. In 2002 he received the Pere

Marquette Award from the Diocese of Peoria,

which is given for “effective leadership and tireless

work” on behalf of the church in central Illinois.

It is for these reasons; I am honored and pleased

to present the Allouez Council 2014 Senior

    INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE

    Update Your Beneficiaries

Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of

    things.

Take, for example, the beneficiaries on your life

insurance policies. If your policy was applied for

and issued several years ago, it may very well be

that the person you originally selected as the

beneficiary is no longer the person you would want

to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the

policy when you were single, for example, you

may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If

you have since married, your policies should be

updated to reflect your spouse as beneficiary.

Maybe you’ve had children since, who are not

    named on the policies.

Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is

specifically designated as the first in priority to

receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the

naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate

person designated to receive policy proceeds,

usually in the event that the original beneficiary

    pre-deceases the insured.

I routinely call all of my policyholders for

annual review appointments, usually near the

anniversary date of your policy – that is, the date it

was originally issued. One of the matters that I’ll

discuss during this review is the status of your

beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and

they often do, I can complete the paperwork during

    that appointment.

I look forward to meeting with each of you to

    discuss your family’s needs.
