Healthwatch Authorised Representative, Claire Cowell spoke to service users at Chilton Pharmacy.

Healthwatch praises Chilton Pharmacy after visitA Chilton pharmacy has received top praise for their great customer service and convenient location from a recent report carried out by Healthwatch County Durham.Healthwatch is working with the Local Pharma-ceutical Committee (LPC) and Public Health County Durham by listening to the views of the public about their knowledge and use of services available in their local pharmacies. As part of this work Health-watch carried out Enter and View visits in three County Durham pharma-cies. Healthwatch Au-thorised Representatives observed service delivery and talked to service users, their families and carers on the premises. The aim was to find out from customers what works well for them and to make recommenda-tions based on what people said, to help the pharma-cies and the LPC. Claire Cowell, Volunteer Support for Healthwatch County Durham said: “We spoke to 37 customers during our three hour visit to Intrahealth Chilton.“Experiences and feedback were unique to individuals but there were some key trends that emerged. “People mainly commented on great customer service, convenient location and stock always being avail-able. “Comments included: ‘staff are friendly and they remember you, this is im-portant when talking about sensitive issues’ and ‘I was taking medicines in such a way that was counterpro-ductive until they stopped me and talked me through how I should be taking specific medicines. feel better’.“The Healthwatch team observed good team spirit and staff who took the time to listen to customers, often knowing them per-sonally and using a private space when needed.”Head Pharmacist James Slack said: “Sometimes we are more accessible from an availability perspective to the patients. “Time constraints do some-times limit patient interac-tion with GPs, but I am certain they would give the same advice around medi-cines if patients asked. “It is important to note that we are an easy option to access for minor ailments prior to making appoint-ments, and for medication advice too. We found the

Enter and View Visit useful in gaining information and feedback from users.”The full report is available on Healthwatch County Durham’s website, health w a t c h c o u n t y d u r h a m.co.uk, and includes the survey results, customer feedback, plus observa-tions and recommenda-tions. Healthwatch County Durham is the consumer champion for local Health and Social Care services. They give patients, service users and the public a voice, and using what they say to influence people who have the power to make things better. Cllr Atkinson, The Garth Warden Ms Jane Pennick, and the Ladies of the Craft Club.

Ex-mayor donates funds to The Garth Craft Club

Cllr Peter Atkinson popped into The Garth at Ferryhill to present their craft club a cheque of £250. This money comes from Cllr Atkinson’s community small budgets allowance (from Durham County

Council), which he says is an ideal way to support local groups in our area. The ladies where very busy knitting and crocheting for various projects leading up to Remembrance Sunday and Christmas.

Cllr Atkinson said: “I was very impressed with the work the ladies at The Garth were on with and the involvement of the staff organising this. They have big plans for next year too.”

week, currently on a Friday throughout the year but were appalled to see what was before them last week. The tools were old items, donated or bought at local car-boot sales, but which are now in weekly use to dig up vegetables and prepare the ground for autumn planting.A spokesperson for the group said; “We have been very well supported by other allotment holders - some of whom have also been broken into - and have previously had a small grant from Durham Council under the ‘It’s Your Neigh-bourhood’ Project.“But we would like to avoid spending what is left of our funds on buying new tools, so if anyone has any old but useable garden tools they could donate, we would be

very grateful. “We are always looking for new members too. We have lots of fun and there is going to be lots to do over the next few months so come and join us.”Despite this setback, the project is set to continue throughout the year and members are determined to continue to improve the allotment further with plans for a greenhouse and more flower planting next year. Members are keen to take part in other ways to improve the area and are participating in the Spruce Up Ferryhill campaign by doing a litter-pick in the park next week.To contact the group with donations, or to express an interest in joining the project, call Carolyn Ste-phenson on 07732 780386 or email [email protected].

Ferryhill Town F.A.I.R. In-dependent Councillors are hosting a coffee morning event. “This is to bring aware-ness to, and raise funds in support of Dementia UK,” said a spokesperson. The event will take place at Dean Bank and Fer-

ryhill Literary Institute on Saturday 7th October from 10.30am until 12.30pm.There will be homemade cakes and biscuits along with a Christmas Cake raffle. For further enquiries, contact Cllr Lauraine Smith on 01740 657975.

Dr Stuart Jones of the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University, explaining T-Rex’s “silly” arms to Ferryhill and Chilton school pupils.

Durham University brings dinosaurs to life for pupils

Last week, Ferryhill Station Primary played host to a dino-tastic event when Dr Stuart Jones, associate professor in the Depart-ment of Earth Sciences at Durham University visited the school. Year 3 pupils from Chilton, Cleves Cross, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station schools came together for the event organised by Approach Too.Dr Jones gave the children

a lesson which ranged from T-Rex’s “silly” arms to century-old fossils. Dr Jones was accompanied by two Durham Univer-sity undergraduate geology students to deliver the in-teractive presentation to more than 100 pupils. They explored the differ-ent types of dinosaurs, when they lived and why they became extinct as well as trying to find out why T-Rex had such small

arms. The geologist said: “It’s the first time we have done this and great to see them absorbed in the topic.” Glenys from Approach Too said: “It’s such an inspi-rational event that brings science to life. “It’s so nice for pupils in Ferryhill and Chilton to meet each other and also get the opportunity to listen and talk to people from Durham University.”

As everyone’s secrets are revealed, Eloise learns a thing or two from the denizens of Table 19.Friendships - and even a little romance - can happen under the most unlikely cir-cumstances.The film, which is for adults only, will be shown on Friday 13th October at 6pm. The entry fee is £3 for a member and £4 for a non-member, which covers refreshments. It costs just £1 to become a Film Club member.

Chapter Ferryhill & Chilton

On Sunday morning the under 10’s made the 70 mile round trip to face Redcar Athletic from the North Riding Division 3 in the cup. Fortunately as the game kicked off it stopped raining and brightened up. Ferryhill also started brightly and spent most of the first 20 minutes in the Redcar half. Plenty of chances were created with four converted in Ferry-hill’s favour with no reply. The second half was almost the same. Redcar came into it a bit more but couldn’t find the net and the only second half goal was also Ferryhill’s, making it 5-0 to the away team who progress to the next round.Coach Paul McKeown said: “Goals came from Zach (3), Jamie and Marc but a clean sheet for the whole team is

just as pleasing. The whole squad were involved in the performance.”The second game saw more rotation of the squad but more of the same on the pitch. The first half was a tighter affair with end to end football but little in terms of goals. As the match wore on, Fer-ryhill began to dominate with possession and chances. They took a 2-0 lead before Redcar managed to get one back. This didn’t deter the away team and they piled on the pressure, finally running out 5-1 winners.Goals came from Aaron (2), Aidan (2) and Zach.Paul added: “It was two enjoyable games and worth the trip. All ten players had plenty of game time and put in some superb performances.”

Ferryhill Under 10s enjoy away cup win

Ferryhill were at home against Second Division Pit-tington FC in the Durham Sports League Cup second round and showed the visitors no mercy in a second half in which they scored an incredible nine goals to run out eventual 10-0 winners and march emphatically into the next round. No one could have envis-aged what was to come after a slow first half in which Celtic were able to find the net just once, from a penalty converted

by Jonathan Agar in the fifteenth minute. But the second half was an entirely different story with Celtic quickly moving through the gears. Within two minutes, another Agar penalty doubled the lead and Pit-tington simply fell apart.Another two by Agar were complimented by strikes from Mark Burnett (2), Shane Todd (2), Jay Smith and Dane Eltringham as the visitors were subjected to a humiliating double-figure rout.

club a much brighter ap-pearance.A spokesperson for the club said: “The members are very grateful for the grant, which has given them a much needed improvement to their premises.”

1B DUNNING ROAD, FERRYHILL.

Established 1845

Early September was the start of Ferryhill Indoor Bowls Club’s winter session and in addition to the usual club leagues, the bowlers faced four inter league matches within the first ten days.An away trip to Darlington IBC in the Senior Men's County Inter League was first up and proved to be fruitless with the club on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline.Five days later, two squads took part in the 1st leg of the Premier League at Gateshead and both hoped for a positive start. The A squad got off to a bad start dropping nine shots

from the first two ends and they never recovered from it. The B squad were always in with a chance against a strong home side. However, the last three ends proved costly as they conceded too many shots as they lost touch and went down by nine shots.Scores: Ferryhill A 22-30 Houghtonians; Ferryhill B 13-22 Gateshead B.The following day, the ladies played their first County Inter League game against Durham and here again the club suffered a heavy defeat. Only the rink of J Cadman, Y Cook, M Richardson and S Maughan were winners with a 20-13

victory to avoid a white-wash.The same day, Darlington IBC was again the venue as the club travelled for their first Durham & District Triples game. Ferryhill were represented by a very strong squad and had high hopes of bringing back the points. Unfortunately, as happens only too frequently away from home, the club failed to play to their potential and suffered a 2-6 defeat with only skip K Weallans taking two points.Scores: K Weallans 12-7 D Wilson; R Jefferson 10-20 B McKay; J Maddison 13-14 G Temple.
