EDITORIAL

Dear Friends of Alliance française !

Even if the year 2014 is drawing to a close, it is not yet time to sit back and reflect. Our rhythm of events is still upbeat and we have scheduled many activities to celebrate the end of the year.

'In and Out Side Life Stories' is the name of the joint exhibition by Ephrem Solomon, one of Ethiopia’s most talented artists, and by Jan van Esch from the Netherlands, visual artist and Director of the Nafasi Art Space. Do not miss this series of paint and chalk drawings, woodcuts and text.

After the 'Positions of Power exhibition' in 2008 and 'the Origins' exhibition of 2011, Tanzanian artist Nadir Tharani is coming back with two series of prints – 'The Magician' and 'Tupo' - that he has been creating - on and off - for the last 2 years.

In addition to the well-established traditions of the Barazani, cinema screening, Music Quiz and Oohlala Friday, we have the famous Beaujolais Nouveau 2014 celebrations and the European Film Festival which are not to be missed!

As for new events, we introduce a Slam/Poetry workshop by Loyce Gayo as well as literature activities with the presentation of David Vee’s book.

Last but not least, we invite you to visit our website www.afdar.com for any information regarding our French language courses.

‘In and Out Side Life Stories’ is a process by two artists; they both Create an Image - Exchange it – Look at it – Reflect - Associate and Build further on the other one’s work. It resulted in a series of paint and chalk drawings complimented with woodcuts and text. Triggering the other with an image, opened a flow of ideas that created a set of works that touch big questions. Life, justice, death and love are addressed, without coming to a clear answer, but inspiring viewers to further elaborate, because ‘If the world were clear, art would not exist (Camus)’

GraceFruit Project is the name of joint works by Ephrem Solomon (Ethiopia) and Jan van Esch (Netherlands) created in Tanzania during Ephrem’s residencies in 2013 and 2014. Ephrem Solomon is one of Ethiopia’s most talented and international successful artists and Jan van Esch is a visual artist and Director of Nafasi Art Space in Dar es Salaam.

The film follows a close-knit group of friends whose bonds are tested and strengthened over a summer holiday. Guillaume Canet weaves a joyous and heartfelt ensemble film out of the dilemmas of eight thirty and forty-something close friends as they vacation together in the summer beach house of uptight restaurateur Max. Starting out light and carefree, tensions begin to fill the air when Ludo is clinging to life following a motorcycle accident, and Max is grappling with unwanted affections from Vincent, whose married life and sexuality are under fire. Womanizing actor Eric and free-spirited ethnologist Marie navigate the challenges of single life while lovelorn Antoine pines for his ex-girlfriend after a sudden breakup.

Director: Guillaume CanetWith : Marion Cotillard, François Cluzet, Benoît Magimel, Gilles Lellouche, Jean Dujardin

Between August and September 21 young artists, beneficiaries of the EU-funded “Art Against Poverty” Project participated to a training meant to prepare professional clowns doctors. Since last September, these special artists are visiting on a weekly basis the little patients of the Muhimbili and CCBRT Hospitals, sharing with them their magic and enthusiasm.

Avrah KaDabra Who is a clown? The Clown is a genuine, true and sincere character. Idealist and pragmatic, dreamer and realistic, strong and weak at the same time, he is never after  laughs, eventually those come from the way he try to deal with the circumstances, tight in his personal conflict between logic and spirit. The show is just a way  to make that happening: through  ballons,  magics, bubbles,  jugglings, sketches and gags he  will share the adventure with the audience and, perhaps, asking for their help.

Avrah KaDabra an appearing and disappearing time; a poem that will last forever!

NEWSHOW

Leo was born in Dar es Salaam in 1981. He began playing guitar when he was eight years old. His father is an African jazz guitarist who played with the renowned Mlimani Park Orchestra. Leo spent years playing his father’s guitar whilst alone in the house, copying the chords he’d seen his father play. Music doesn’t pay in Tanzania, so Leo’s father was adamant his son should follow another career. But when he found Leo playing a classic Tanzanian song one day, he decided to give his son his wish, and taught him all that he knew. Today they play together, with Leo leading the band and his father on solo guitar. In 2010 Leo recorded a four-track CD, Dunia Hii. Leo released his first full-length album in August 2011, Jasho Langu, which received excellent reviews. He is completing a new album, to be released in coming months.

Leo has played at the London African Music Festival in 2011, Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar in 2012, and Bayimba Festival in Uganda in 2013.

“Tupo & The Magician”by Nadir Tharani

6.30pmExhibition Hall

ENTRANCE FREE

After the Positions of Power exhibition in 2008 that mainly consisted of black and white drawings, and the Origins exhibition of 2011 where his subject matter was the ocean, Nadir Tharani this time shows prints. These comprise of two series (and some related paintings) that he has been working on and off for the last two years.

"Why The Magician? How will we change the world? Through magic. I don’t mean the juju kind. It will require superhuman effort, the seared kind, to change the world – at the moment, in our times, this feels like magic.

These prints stem from a painting/drawing which depicted one of the magicians. Though the prints depict a face or the upper torso, they require an effort to read.tupo = we are here; and the prints range from tupo. chini ya miti na nyota= we are here.under the trees and stars, tupo.heri ya mwaka mpya = we are here.happy new year to tupo.kila mahali = we are here.everywhere.We are magicians also,"Five prints from the set of eight will be on show.
