THE MISSION OF THE ALLENTOWN SYMPHONY
ASSOCIATION IS TO PROVIDE A FIRST-CLASS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
AND HALL, QUALITY PERFORMING ARTS, AND CULTURAL EDUCATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
THE COMMUNITY.
We are pleased to offer our patrons and supporters this summary of our season and fiscal year that ended May 31, 2017. In November 2016, we unveiled Miller Symphony Hall’s new marquee, the result of the generosity of supporters and years of planning. The marquee is the perfect representation of an exciting year made possible by our patrons, partners, donors, artists, and staff.
Every day it helps us communicate and connect, and that is what we did this season, forging partnerships and expanding community access inside and outside our walls. A spectacular example was our first-ever Symphony on Ice at the PPL Center three weeks before Christmas. The symphony joined champion skater Jeremy Abbott, choirs from local high schools, and members of the Bethlehem Penguin Skating Club for a memorable evening that we intend to make a community tradition. The show was seen far beyond the center that night because it was broadcast regionally by Service Electric, our new partner. Service Electric went on to broadcast a Viennese concert in February, an organ concert in March, and the season’s youth concert, a performance of Peter and the Wolf featuring Prokofiev’s music and storyteller Michael Boudewyns. We also took our world-class musicians on the road for a free concert at the ¡Sabor! Latin Festival at the Levitt Pavilion at SteelStacks.
In addition to our many ongoing education programs such as El Sistema Lehigh Valley, we welcomed Muhlenberg professor Gail Eisenberg and her students to a concert, an experience they then used to examine best practices for running a non-profit. And there were the Girl Scouts, who came to a symphony performance and created a symphony badge.
Throughout the season, the Century Fund continued to provide free tickets to attendees 21 and younger. The fund and our other supporters helped us reach a nine-year high for attendance, build multi-generational support, and continue to bring the Lehigh Valley region world-class music in all its forms.
Join us for another season.
We look forward to seeing you at the hall!

The Allentown Symphony Orchestra opened its 2016-2017 season with legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis playing Villa-Lobos’ Fantasia for Saxophone and Orchestra, and closed with Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony No. 2, a glorious work demanding every inch of performance space and the combined power of the orchestra, guest vocalists, and the Allentown Symphony Chorus. These eventswere bookends to a sparkling season filled with new ventures in new venues.
In June 2016, the orchestra joined Bethlehem’s ¡Sabor! Latin Festival for a free concert of Tangos and Latin Rhythms at the SteelStacks’ Levitt Pavilion, opened by the El Sistema Lehigh Valley String Orchestra. This was one of many out-and-about events augmenting traditional performances at Miller Symphony Hall. The spectacular, inaugural Symphony on Ice at the PPL Center, with the help of the Brooks brothers, was filmed and broadcast by new partner Service Electric, who went on to win a 2017 Mid-Atlantic region Emmy for its broadcast of our Spring Youth Concert, Peter and the Wolf. A week-long Organ Festival, in partnership with the American Guild of Organists and Allen Organ, included concerts at Muhlenberg College, Allentown Civic Theatre and other venues throughout the Lehigh Valley. Summer chamber music performances at downtown Allentown restaurants and other public areas featured musicians of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, thanks in part to funding by Air Products. A month-long collaboration of concerts with St. John’s Lutheran Church in downtown Allentown culminated in a performance of the Allentown Symphony Chorus with brass and percussion. The Allentown Art Museum was the venue for a concert with Marco Sartor, 2002 Schadt Competition winner, on classical guitar.
When we weren’t on the road, we were inviting the community into our beautiful hall for popular events such as Phantasy Chamber Music, in which 22 community musicians performed with and were mentored by ASO musicians. An exciting new event was the Elgar Enigma Variations Composer’s Competition where aspiring local composers, divided into two youth and two adult categories, were invited to create a short composition, using Elgar’s theme of characterizing someone significant in their lives. The winning compositions were performed at the hall in November, accompanied by slides of the people who inspired them. In Spring 2017-2018, we will again sponsor a composition competition, partnering with the Allentown Art Museum by inviting composers to write music based upon paintings, tying into our concert featuring Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Our primary obligation is to elevate quality of life through music, a mission we will continue to pursue with ingenuity and passion for you, our community.
– Diane Wittry

“Symphony on Ice sparked a fire,” said Andrew Himmelwright, Service Electric TV2 general manager. He was referring to his company’s partnership with the Allentown Symphony, which began with the broadcast last year of the first-ever holiday show on the ice at the PPL Center. Classical concerts and the symphony’s presentation of Peter and the Wolf followed, garnering Service Electric a regional Emmy.
Himmelwright, a lifelong Allentown resident, attended the symphony’s concerts when he was a boy, forming an abiding bond.
“There is nothing like it—it fills a void for all ages. The symphony is a jewel of our community, a vital asset with world class musicians, not very common anywhere. Service Electric is committed to the community, so it is a natural partnership.”

2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 7
Ronald Demkee loves Allentown Symphony’s annual Pops Series for many reasons. “The most compelling,” he said, “is how the diverse programs bring people together. Look at the Disney concerts—such a family show and all generations could relate, from kids to the baby boomers who grew up with this music.”
Demkee has been the symphony’s associate conductor since 1983 and conducts the Pops Series, which consists of four to five performances a year and presents a wide spectrum of music from jazz to movie music to Broadway. “The concerts attract a large audience. We play to sold-out houses almost every time,” he said. “And the musicians enjoy it too,” he added, “because they are as comfortable with these programs as they are with the classical music they also present to the community every year in the Subscription Series.” Now, he said, “when people have seemingly endless options to fill their leisure time, offering a broad array of music is even more crucial than in the past.”
He hopes that “the Pops concerts are a stepping stone to get people who might not initially be attracted to classical music to come to this beautiful hall and experience live performances, then get them interested in coming back.” Often, the performances are enhanced with multimedia, dance, and other elements that offer the audience an all-encompassing experience, part of what modern concertgoers enjoy and expect. Demkee anticipates many more years of delighting audiences and keeping the community connected to the symphony and all the rich variety it has to offer.

BALL
8 | 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT
Lovely Viennese music set the mood for the Allentown Symphony’s 67th Annual Ball, held at the Lehigh Valley Country Club. The ball’s honorary chair persons were Kathleen and J.B. Reilly. Reilly founded City Center, which has transformed downtown Allentown in recent years. “Kathleen and I are longtime supporters of the Allentown Symphony Association,” said Reilly. “Over the years, we have taken a special interest in the association’s El Sistema Lehigh Valley program, which provides underserved and special needs youth with a free opportunity to participate in music instruction, performances and tutoring. It was an honor for us to co-chair this year’s ball in support of the association’s tremendous contribution to our community.”

I have seen my Lauren’s self-esteem go up.
The program boosted her confidence in her other classes and despite
dyslexia, she learned to read music very quickly. When she started school years ago,
she was a shy kid. Now she is comfortable and confident at school. The nurturing power of
music has made that happen.

When I play the violin, I feel like a free spirit. It makes me feel like I can do anything. A roaring free spirit!
– APRIL ROSE VALERA 5th Grade Student El Sistema
It was a light-bulb moment, said Tom Groves, recalling how he and his wife, Haydemar, agreed to host a major fundraiser for El Sistema Lehigh Valley in December 2016.
Tom, an insurance executive, and Haydemar, an interpreter at the Lehigh County Courthouse, love music and their community. Last year they met someone who brought those two things together—and the light bulb flashed.
Symphony volunteer Carol Osborn invited the Grovesto a luncheon at Miller Symphony Hall, where they met Norma Nuñez-Ruch, the symphony’s director of education and El Sistema. Once they met Nuñez-Ruch and heard how the music-driven program helps build success for hundreds of local children by enhancing academic performance, they only had one question – “How can we help?”
The answer became a joyful gathering at the Groves’ lovely Allentown home to celebrate Haydemar’s birthday and to show their friends, many of whom are business and professional leaders, the connection between the arts and achievement by meeting the children of El Sistema.
Haydemar was born in Venezuela, where the global phenomenon, El Sistema, originated decades ago as a portal out of poverty and despair for underprivileged children. The local program, she said, has special resonance for her. She believes that music instruction and the discipline it provides help children learn that if they work hard and do things the right way, they will succeed.
Tom agreed. “It teaches superior study habits and valuable life lessons that change their lives for the better,” he said.
The memory of El Sistema children brought smiles from Tom and Haydemar as they thought about the evening at their home. The students spoke of their love for the program, they recalled, and played Christmas music for the crowd. The Groves hope the program continues to flourish, lighting the way for more and more young people like those who made that evening so special.

Like other cultural non-profit organizations, ASA relies significantly on philanthropy to support its concerts, performances, and historic hall. The charts below explain the economic realities that we face. Your generosity sets the standards of excellence for our productions, presentations, education programs, and our hall. On behalf of the ASA Board, staff, musicians, school children, concertgoers, and our city, we thank you for keeping the arts humming at Miller Symphony Hall.

In the 1980s, the Allentown Symphony Association faced myriad challenges and an uncertain future. If it was to flourish, the organization needed to retain its rich traditions while opening itself to new ideas. Symphony trustees realized they needed key community leaders to help. One of those leaders was attorney Malcolm “Mal” Gross, lifelong Allentown resident whose family had helped run the city for generations.
The symphony already had his heart, said Mal, recalling his many years as a patron and his mother’s devotion to the organization. “One of the challenges was how to marry a beautiful old theater with a wonderful orchestra,” said Mal, the son and grandson of Allentown mayors. That would take a major injection of capital to renovate the historic hall. The other immediate need was recruiting a new conductor. With help from others and a good deal of luck, he said, the board of trustees achieved these crucial goals.
“We found Diane Wittry,” he said, a dynamic new force as conductor “who restored professionalism to the orchestra and brought lots of new ideas. We were able to turn the symphony in the right direction.”
In the meantime, he said, the board sought new forms of support from community groups, and persuaded the venerable Trexler Trust to underwrite the costs of the new conductor. Mal went on to head the board, which ushered in new, revenue-producing uses of the hall, corporate underwriting of concerts and a capital campaign that attracted previously untapped sources of support.
Some changes were controversial, said Mal, but in the end, they kept the lights on and the music playing. Hard work was responsible but serendipity also intervened, he said, referring to the endowment left by two brothers named Schadt that supports the National Schadt String Competition. The annual competition began in the late ‘80s, adding vigor and prestige to the Allentown Symphony Association.
Mal and his law firm, Gross McGinley, continue to support the symphony and many other cultural treasures in the Lehigh Valley. He worries about waning interest in classical music but applauds the eclectic expansion of programming by Wittry and Executive Director Sheila Evans, “a double-barreled approach inside and outside the hall.”
