Now known as SEPTA’s Norristown High Speed Line, the Philadelphia and Western (P&W) was built in 1906 from Upper Darby, PA to Strafford, PA. The branch to Norristown, which includes the mile-long trestle bridge over the Schuylkill River, was completed in 1912. The entire line has a 600-volt third rail providing the power. The western portion of the original line, from Villanova to Strafford, was abandoned in 1956 and now serves as the Radnor Trail (a hiking and mountain biking trail). That leaves the thirteen-mile long Upper Darby to Norristown segment active, with a new branch to the King of Prussia mall.

All-aluminum Bullet Cars were the mainstay of this line from 1931 until 1990. These excellent high-speed trolleys were the first rail cars designed in a wind tunnel. Models were tested at the University of Michigan. Not only were these cars the latest in style, they made use of state of the art technology. They were capable of speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, and saw 80 mph on a regular basis. That they lasted sixty years is a tribute to the excellent design, and the quality of the construction.

Riding the Bullet Cars was like stepping back in time to 1931. One thing that can’t be related by these photographs is the deep buzz or hum that came from the four powerful electric motors under the floor. And with much of the track in rough condition, riders felt every bit of the eighty miles an hour these cars were capable of.

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageePhillip Baur, cofounder of Tasky Baking Company, was born to bake. His father owned the Bauer

Brothers Bakery in Pittsburgh, and young Phillip eagerly learned the basics of snack making- great taste, good

value, and most importantly fresh ingredients. When his Dad sold the Pittsburgh bakery, Baur joined forces

with Herbert Morris, an egg salesman. They had a fresh idea: individually wrapped snack cakes, baked and

delivered fresh daily. On February 25, 1914 with $50,000 they raised from family members they founded Tasty

Baking Company.

When Baur’s Dad sold his business, part of the deal was that no member of the Baur family could open a

bakery within 100 miles of Pittsburgh, so Phillip and his partner, Herbert Morris, set their sights on the bustling

town of Philadelphia. They walked the streets of Philadelphia searching for the right building to house their

bakery. Finally, after 3 long days, they found it on Sedgley Avenue in the city’s Germantown section. There

were challenges from the start. Philadelphia was more humid that Pittsburgh, so the icing wouldn’t thicken the

way it had back home. But soon, the first cakes were rolling off the assembly line.

The cakes were a hit! Now all Phillip and Herbert needed was a name. Herbert’s wife Willavene solved

that problem when after biting into one of the cakes she declaed “What a tasty cake!” Soon after, Herbert

Morris was struck with inspiration and sketched out a logo for the new name. (Why he chose to spell Kake with

a K is a still a Tasty mystery) His design has remained pretty much the same ever since.

On the very first day of business Tasty Baking Company sold $28 worth of snack cakes at a dime each.

By the end of the first week the company had made $222. At years end, sales reached $300,000!

How Tastykakes got around in the early days… the trade mark Tastykake horse and wagon, a familiar

sight on the streets of Philadelphia. Horses were vital to the company’s success, and they were given great care

by the drivers. The last horse was retired in 1941.

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeThe Krimpet was orginally a finger shaped cake with a thick layer of icing, but when the bakers tried to

pick up the cake it was so moist it fell apart between their fingers. Someone recommended that the bakers

“crimp it.” It worked and so did the name.

1950’sAmerica had won World War II, but by the 1950s something was conquering America: television.

Tastykake embraced the new technology, bringing popular movie and TV personalities like Joe E. Brown, Betty

White and Shari Lewis in front of the camera to spread the word about Krimpets, Kandy Kakes and Pies. The

stars that Tastykake fans loved best were from sports; a legacy that continues to this day. Through the years,

Tastykake has teamed up with the great Philadelphia sports franchises- Phillies, Eagles and Flyers, as well as

legendary teams beyond Philadelphia like the New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh

Steelers.

TodayIn 2011 Tasty Baking merged with Flower Foods, one of the largest baking companies in the U.S., and it

now operates a wholly owned subsidiary of Flower Foods. Joining with Flowers has allowed Tastykake to

bring Philadelphia’s favorite snack cakes to retail stores around the country, introducing millions of Americans

to one of Philadelphia’s best loved treats.

Excitement at Little League World Se-riesBy Associated Press, adapted by Newsela staff08.17.14

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeSOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — More than 60 years ago, Kathryn "Tubby" Johnston Massar cut off her braids and tucked her hair under her cap. She disguised herself to become the first girl to play Lit-tle League baseball. Today she's delighted to see two girls in the Little League World Series.

"It's truly amazing. I'm very happy to see girls playing," said Massar, now 78.

Mo'ne Davis Makes History

On Friday, Philadelphia's Mo'ne Davis and Canada's Emma March became the 17th and 18th girls to ever play in the tournament. It is only the third time in the event's 68-year history that two girls are playing in the same series.

Davis pitched for Philadelphia as it beat Nashville 4-0. She had eight strikeouts and didn't walk a bat-ter. She only gave up two hits.

Fans cheered loudly when Davis struck out the final batter. With that final out, she became the first fe-male pitcher to throw a shutout in Little League World Series history. She did not allow any runs.

"It's very unreal. I never thought at the age of 13, I would be a role model," Davis said. "Hopefully, more girls play Little League."

Excitement In The Batter's Box

March did not fare as well.

She played first base and batted fourth, just ahead of her brother, Evan. March went hitless Friday in Canada's 4-3 loss to Mexico.

Still, March created some excitement when she stepped into the batter's box for the Canadian team.

She hit a ball deep into the outfield in the fourth inning that the crowd thought might be a home run. However, the hit sailed foul into the stands. Then in the fifth inning, March stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and Canada down by two runs. She struck out watching a pitch go by that went over the outside corner of home plate.

As March trotted back to the dugout, the crowd let the umpire know it did not agree with the call. Boos rained down from the stands.

Big Leagues Could Be Next

Before every game, someone gets to throw out the first pitch. It is a tradition. Massar was chosen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at one of Monday's games. She believes more girls will start to play in Little League. She said she is certain that someday there will be a woman in Major League Baseball.

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeMassar played in 1950, leading to a rule that said girls could not play Little League baseball. The rule was reversed in 1974. She describes herself as a "trailblazer" and said she celebrates her place in history.

"It's something I'm proud of," she said. "Why not play baseball with the boys?"

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett was at the game to watch Davis play.

"There's a lot of pressure on her, and she seems to be handling it very, very well for her age," Cor-bertt said. "It goes to show you how sports have moved the last 30 or 40 years, and we wouldn't have thought of this 40 or 50 years ago. And today, she's out there pitching, doing a great job and I'm sit-ting there thinking, 'Is she going to go into professional baseball?' I don't know."

He added, "She's played as well as any kid out there right now."

Civil Rights- Little Rock NineBackground

In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was legal for schools to be segregated. This meant that there could be schools just for white children and schools just for black children. However, the schools for black children were not as good and people thought this was unfair.

Brown v. Board of Education

In order to fight against segregation in schools, a lawsuit called Brown v. Board of Education was brought to the Supreme Court in 1954. The lawyer representing African-Americans was Thurgood Marshall. He won the case and the Supreme Court said that segregation in schools was unconstitu-tional.

Reality

Despite the new ruling of the Supreme Court, some schools in the South did not allow black children. In Little Rock, Arkansas, a plan was put together to slowly integrate the schools, but it allowed for in-tegration very slowly and didn't allow for blacks to attend some high schools.

Protesters trying to stop the Little Rock Nine

Who were the Little Rock Nine?

One of the high schools that blacks were not allowed to attend was Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The local leader of the NAACP was a lady named Daisy Bates. Daisy recruited nine African-American high school students to enroll at Central High. The nine students were Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray, Terrance Roberts, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Jeffer-son Thomas, Melba Patillo, and Carlotta Walls. These students became known as the Little Rock Nine.

First Day at School

When the Little Rock Nine went to attend the first day of school on September 4, 1957 they were probably scared and worried. It's bad enough to go to a first day at a new school, but this was much worse. When the students arrived there were people yelling at them. They told them to go away and that they didn't want them there. In addition to the other students, there were National Guard soldiers blocking their way into the school. The governor of Arkansas had deployed the soldiers to prevent the students from going to school and in defiance of the Supreme Court.

The students were scared and they returned home.

Armed Escort

After the Arkansas governor got involved in stopping the Little Rock Nine from attending school,Presi-dent Dwight Eisenhower took action. He sent the U.S. Army to Little Rock to protect the students. A few weeks later, the students attended school surrounded by army soldiers.

Attending School

Having the soldiers only protected the Little Rock Nine from harm, but they still had a very difficult year. Many of the white students treated them poorly and called them names. It took a lot of courage to stay in school even for one day. One student, Minnijean Brown, couldn't take it any longer and fi-nally left for a high school in New York. The other eight, however, made it to the end of the year and one student, Ernest Green, graduated.

After the first year, in 1958, the Arkansas governor closed all the public high schools in Little Rock. He decided that it was better to have no school at all than to have integrated schools. The schools re-mained closed for the entire school year. When the schools reopened the following year, many peo-ple blamed the Little Rock Nine for causing them to miss a year of school. The racial tension got worse in the coming years.

Results

Although the immediate results of the Little Rock Nine's actions were not positive, they did help the de-segregation of public schools to take a huge step forward in the South. Their bravery gave other students the courage to press forward in the years to come.

Interesting Facts about the Little Rock Nine Before going to school, Lois Patillo told her daughter Melba "Smile, no matter what. Remem-

ber, not everyone approved of what Jesus did, but that didn't stop him." Melba Patillo grew up to become a reporter for NBC News. Terrance Roberts continued his education and eventually earned his Ph.D. and became a pro-

fessor at UCLA. One of the most successful of the Little Rock Nine was Ernest Green who worked forPresident

Jimmy Carter as the Assistant Secretary of Labor.

Thurgood Marshall Occupation: Lawyer and Supreme Court Justice Born: July 2, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland Died: January 24, 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland Best known for: Becoming the first African-American Supreme Court Justice

Where did Thurgood Marshall grow up?

Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908. His father, William, worked as a steward at an all-white country club. His mother, Norma, was a kindergarten teacher. His grandfather was a slave who gained his freedom by escaping from the South during the Civil War.

Going to School

Marshall was a good student in school, but often got into trouble for misbehaving. He loved to argue and became a star of the debate team. Marshall's dad enjoyed going to court and listening to law cases. This caused Marshall to want to become a lawyer, even though his parents had hoped he would follow in his older brother's footsteps and become a dentist.

Marshall attended college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. While at college he enjoyed being on the debate team and joined the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He also fell in love with Vivien Burey and was married in 1929. After graduating from Lincoln, Marshall wanted to attend the University of Mary-land. However, their law school would not admit him because he was African-American. Instead, Mar-shall went to law school at Howard University where he finished first in his class, graduating in 1933.

Working as a Lawyer

After graduating and passing the bar exam, Marshall opened a small law practice in Baltimore. One of his first big cases was against the University of Maryland. Marshall remembered how they would not admit him because of his race. In 1935, he heard of another student, Donald Murray, who was turned away just like Marshall was. Marshall took the University of Maryland to court and won the case. Now they would have to let African-Americans attend the school. This was just the start of Marshall's fight against segregation.

NAACP

Marshall began to be known for both his skill as a lawyer and his passion for civil rights. He became the chief counsel (main lawyer) for the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Over the next several years, Marshall traveled the country defending African-Americans who were often wrongly accused. He also fought against segregation and the Jim Crow laws of the South. He eventually earned the nickname "Mr. Civil Rights".

Brown v. Board of Education

Marshall's most famous case came in 1954. It was called Brown v. Board of Education. In this case Marshall argued that schools should not be segregated. At that time there were separate schools for black children and white children. It was illegal in many states for black children to attend the same schools as white children. The argument that many states used was one called "separate but equal". Marshall argued that separate schools could not be equal. In a landmark decision for the Civil Rights Movement, Marshall won the case showing that segregation in schools was unconstitutional.

Becoming a Judge

In 1961, Marshall was appointed as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals by President John F. Kennedy. He served there until 1965 when he became the United States Solicitor General. As So-licitor General he represented the federal government before the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Justice

President Lyndon Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall for the Supreme Court in 1966. He was confirmed by the Senate on August 30, 1967 and became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. While serving on the Supreme Court, Marshall championed the rights of the individual. He served on the court for 24 years. He retired in 1991 and was replaced by another African-American judge, Clarence Thomas.

Legacy

Thurgood Marshall died of heart failure on January 24, 1993. He left a legacy of using the law and the Constitution to fight for the rights of all people. He broke down racial barriers, including achieving one of the highest positions in the government as a member of the Supreme Court.

Interesting Facts about Thurgood Marshall Marshall had to memorize the U.S. Constitution in high school as punishment for misbehaving

in class. His birth first name was Thoroughgood, but as a child Marshall got tired of having to write out

such a long name. He shortened his name to Thurgood in the second grade. While working as a lawyer he argued 32 cases before the Supreme Court and won 29 of them. There was a one-man play about the life of Thurgood Marshall called Thurgood which ap-

peared on Broadway starring Laurence Fishburne in 2008.

P-51 Mustang planes from World War II soar in a scene from Red Tails.

History is filled with groups of unsung heroes. Until recently, one group that had been largely ignored was the Tuskegee Airmen. They were the first group of African-American fighter pilots in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Their success and heroism helped pave the way for ending racial segre-gation in the military.  The new action-adventure movie Red Tails, produced by George Lucas, is based on their story. It follows a group of Tuskegee Airmen as they receive their first combat mission. “We’re proud of this story and this part of American history,” says actor Cuba Gooding Jr., who plays Major Emmanuelle Stance in the film.

It is a story that Star Wars director George Lucas has wanted to tell for 23 years. He enlisted film-maker Anthony Hemingway to direct. Hemingway admits that figuring out what parts of the story to tell, and how to balance the action and drama, was a challenge. “It’s been a long journey that thank-fully was supported by George to really get it right and to a place where it stands on its own,” Hem-mingway said during a press event with the cast and crew earlier this month. “It makes a statement and we can walk away being proud of it.”

Tuskegee Airmen attend the Red Tails premiere on January 10, in New York City.

A Change in HistoryThe characters in the movie are fictionalized, but the story behind them is real. The Tuskegee Airmen began as an experiment by the Civil Aeronautics Authority at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Al-abama. The Authority trained African-American soldiers to become combat pilots. Up until then, African Americans had been allowed only to be ground soldiers in segregated troops. About 450 sol-diers became the original Tuskegee Airmen.

The airmen faced racism and a lack of support in the military. Military personnel considered the air-men second-class citizens. Some military personnel held ignorant views. They did not think African

Page 41: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeAmericans had the intelligence or skill to fly fighter planes. When the Tuskegee Airmen were finally given a chance, they proved their critics wrong. They performed with courage and skill. During the thousands of missions the airmen flew, they did not lose any of the bombers they escorted. The air-men shot down more than a hundred enemy aircraft.

The name “Red Tails” comes from the distinctive paint the airmen added to their P-51 Mustang planes. That mark eventually brought them respect from fellow Air Force pilots. “When they found out how good the Tuskegee Airmen were at saving their lives, their attitudes changed,” said Dr. Roscoe Brown, an original Tuskegee Airman and a consultant for the film.  “These guys were rock stars,” ac-tor Nate Parker, who plays Marty “Easy” Julian, said. “They were celebrated in the black press. These were men who aspired to excellence in every element of their life, and they flew fighter planes. What’s cooler than that?”

Lessons on SetBrown and other surviving Tuskegee Airmen were regular visitors to the film’s set in Prague, Czech Republic.  “I would always find out another interesting fact about their accomplishments. Every day was eye opening,” Gooding said of their visits.

The pilots in Red Tails use nicknames while communicating up in the air. Seen here are Marty "Easy" Julian (Nate Parker), Leon "Neon" Edwards (Kevin Phillips) and Joe "Lightning" Little (David Oyelowo).

For the actors, it was hard to imagine how young the airmen were when they flew the planes. Many of the airmen were just 18 years old. “I’m learning that these teenagers were something more than we could have ever imagined,” Terrance Howard, who plays Colonel A.J. Bullard, said. In the movie, his character has to argue with the military brass in Washington, D.C., to earn opportunities for the air-men.

Red Tails is packed with in-flight action scenes featuring P-51s and other military planes. According to the cast, the scenes are true to the maneuvers the airmen made during their missions. “The P-51s were the racing car of the time. It was sleek, it could turn, it could dive, it could climb,” Brown said. “It was the best fighter plane ever made.”

To prepare for their roles, the cast went through a boot camp, got piloting lessons from the original airmen, and had the opportunity to fly in military planes. The actors experienced the loops, turns and forces the pilots were up against. Elijah Kelley, who plays Samuel “Joker” George, described his amazement at the strength the pilots needed to operate the planes. “They were superheroes, liter-ally,” Kelley said.

Amtrak crash raises questions about safety on busiest train line in U.S.By McClatchy Washington Bureau, adapted by Newsela staff05.15.15

seven people were killed in the accident, which happened Tuesday night. Photo: AP Photo/Patrick Semansky

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday night, an Amtrak train went off the tracks in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At least seven people were killed. The terrible accident raised questions about the safety of the nation’s busiest train line.

The accident occurred along a stretch of the heavily traveled Washington to Boston route. The route is known as the Northeast Corridor.

Investigators determined that the train had been speeding. It was rounding a curve at twice the speed limit when it left the tracks.

Some say the curve where the accident happened is dangerous. They have long said that such sharp curves in the tracks should be replaced.

Lack Of Money Delays Repairs

Amtrak is a national railroad service funded by the government. Some people feel it receives too little money to meet its needs.

Page 45: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeBecause it does not have enough money, Amtrak cannot make make necessary improvements. Repairs to aging bridges, tunnels and tracks are being delayed.

Amtrak has hardly enough money to keep things running, said railroads expert Steve Ditmeyer. Many things that should be repaired or replaced are left as is, he said.

The seven-car train traveling from Washington to New York derailed Tuesday night in Northeast Philadelphia.

Pieces of the train were spread around the track. Part of the train overturned, and one car was left a twisted heap of shredded metal.

Train Was Going Too Fast

On Wednesday afternoon, investigators said the train had approached the curve at more than 100 miles an hour. The speed limit there is 50 miles an hour.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s there were plans to straighten out curves in the Northeast Corridor's tracks. The improvements never happened because in the end the government decided not to pay for them.

Half of the line’s bridges were built between 1900 and 1920. Two tunnels under Baltimore, Maryland, were built way back in the 1870s.

“These are ancient things,” Ditmeyer said. “They’re well over a hundred years old.” Many are falling apart and badly need to be fixed or replaced, he said.

The twin tunnels under the Hudson River in New York were built in 1910. They were heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Tens of thousands of travelers pass through the tunnels every day.

Amtrak President Joe Boardman says the tunnels need to be replaced soon. "We’ve got to do it — the nation has to do it. We have to find the money,” he said last year.

A System To Avoid Crashes

Amtrak is in the process of installing a system to avoid crashes. The system, called positive train control, is designed to prevent trains from going faster than the speed limits as they approach curves.

Ditmeyer said the Northeast Corridor was long ago equipped with a system called automatic train control. That system prevents trains from running past stop signals. However, it does not correct for fast speeds ahead of curves.

Unlike Amtrak’s long-distance trains, which are diesel powered, the Northeast Corridor is electrified. The system of wires and steel supports that supplies electrical power to the trains dates back to the 1930s.

Amtrak says 62 percent of the wires and 42 percent of the steel supports need to be replaced.

BaseballBaseball is often called the "National Pastime" of the United States. A sport that was mostly invented in the United States, baseball is considered a big part of the USA's history and culture. Baseball's influence over pop culture can be seen in its influence in movies, art, television, news, and more over the years.

Baseball is popular at all levels of age and skill and in many different areas of the world. Often kids grow up playing baseball with many children playing T-ball (a form of baseball where the ball is placed on a Tee so it's easy to hit) at the age of 4 or 5 and then moving on to coach-pitch, player-pitch, little league, high school, college, and the Major Leagues. Professional baseball in the United States has many levels of baseball called the minor leagues. In the minors, players hone their skills and grow into major league players. The minor leagues also gives small towns the opportunity to have their own professional baseball team and have been a big part in keeping baseball popular.

Baseball is a sport that combines many different physical and mental talents. Many players are specialists like the pitcher who specializes in throwing the ball accurately to the hitter, but also making the ball difficult to hit. Some players are good at hitting home runs while others are experts at fielding. It's this combination of skills and team play that make the game complex and interesting.

Baseball is different from many other major sports, like basketball and football, in that there is no clock. This gives baseball a slow, methodic pace that is unique and also is ideal for long, lazy summer days when the game is played. Strategy and subtlety are key elements to winning games.

Baseball also has a rich history of unique players and personalities that have become household names. Some of these players include Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Hank Aaron, and Jackie Robinson.

Baseball's long history, heroic players, and rich game play have made it one of the world's most popular sports.

Baseball: The Pitcher

The pitcher is the most important person in the game and will have the most impact on whether a team wins or loses. The pitcher, along with the catcher, is involved in every play.

To be a good pitcher you need to have a strong arm and be able to throw the ball accurately. If you can't throw strikes, you will have a tough time pitching.

Pitching Strategy and Tips

The main pitching strategy when you first start pitching is to throw strikes. Walking players and past balls will generally hurt you more than giving up hits. If you can throw strikes you will have a good chance at success in youth baseball.

Once you can throw strikes, here are some other things to work on: Focus on the catcher's glove. Don't worry about anything else but that glove. Concentrate on

the glove throughout your pitch. Don't get fancy on the first pitch. Try to throw it for a strike and get ahead in the count. Pitch at your own pace. Take your time and get into a rhythm. Be consistent with your motion. Each time you pitch, your motion, landing, and follow through

should look exactly the same. Work on throwing over the top and not sidearm. This will give you more power and reduce the

chance of injury.

Protecting Your Arm

It is important to not pitch too much when you are young. You can ruin your arm. Often the top youth pitchers will feel pressure to pitch a lot because their team needs them. They may even play on multi-ple teams. Parents need to protect their children by making sure they are not pitching too often and for too long.

Mentally Tough

Pitchers need to be mentally tough. Even the best pitchers go through tough times, but the mentally

Page 50: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Mageetough ones will be able to forget about it, keep their concentration, and continue to pitch their best. This is definitely not as easy as it sounds. Many pitchers in the major leagues fall apart when they are rocked for a grand slam or walk in a run. However, if you can learn to forget about that last bad pitch and focus on the next good one, you will be a much better pitcher.

Pitching Roles

In the higher levels of play, like the major leagues, many pitchers have specific roles they play in a game. Here are some of those roles:

Starting pitcher - The pitcher who starts the game is called the starting pitcher. Sometimes starting pitchers will complete the entire game pitching all nine innings, but this doesn't happen that often. If a starting pitcher can pitch six or seven good innings, they have done their job.

Middle reliever - When the starting pitcher struggles, the middle reliever comes in to pitch a few innings and tries to get the game into the hands of the setup man.

Setup man - The setup man will usually pitch one or two innings. Their job is to keep the game close so the closer can come in the ninth inning.

The closer - The closer is a top pitcher who generally pitches the last inning of a close game. Often they are power pitchers who come in and throw as hard as they can for one inning.

Jackie Robinson

Page 53: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Magee Occupation: Baseball Player Born: January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia Died: October 24, 1972 in Stamford, Connecticut Best known for: The first African-American to play Major League Baseball

Where did Jackie Robinson grow up?

Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. He was the youngest of five children. Jackie's father left the family shortly after he was born and Jackie never saw him again. His mother Millie raised him and his three brothers and one sister.

About a year after Jackie was born, the family moved to Pasadena, California. There Jackie grew up watching his older brothers excel in sports. His brother Mack became a track star who won a silver medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1936 Olympics.

Playing Sports

Jackie loved to play sports. In high school he ran track like his older brother and also played other sports like football, baseball, tennis, and basketball. He was the quarterback of the football team and the star player on the baseball team. Jackie had to deal with racism all through high school. Most of his teammates were white and, while people would cheer him on the field, he was treated as a sec-ond class citizen off the field.

Jackie went to college at UCLA where he again starred in track, baseball, football, and basketball. He was the first athlete at UCLA to earn varsity letters in all four sports. He also won the NCAA Champi-onship in the long jump.

Joining the Army

After college, Robinson went to play professional football, but his career came to a quick end with the start of World War II. He was drafted into the army. Jackie met the famous boxing champion Joe Lewis at basic training and they became friends. Joe helped Robinson get accepted into officer train-ing school.

Once Jackie finished his officer training, he was sent to Fort Hood, Texas to join the 761st Tank Bat-talion. This battalion was made up of only African-American soldiers because they were not allowed

Name: _____________________ Maniac Mageeto serve alongside white soldiers. Jackie got into trouble one day while riding an army bus when he refused to move to the back. He nearly got kicked out of the army, but ended up leaving the army with an honorable discharge in 1944.

Playing Baseball

Soon after leaving the army, Robinson began to play professional baseball for the Kansas City Monarchs. The Monarchs were part of the Negro Baseball League. At this time in history, black players were still not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. Jackie played well. He was an excellent short stop and hit for an average of .387.

The Brooklyn Dodgers

While Jackie was playing for the Monarchs he was approached by Branch Rickey, the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Branch wanted to sign an African-American player to help the Dodgers win the pennant. When he approached Robinson, Branch told Jackie that he would face all sorts of racism when he first went to play for the Dodgers. Branch wanted someone who could take all the insults and not fight back. In their first conversation Jackie and Branch had this famous exchange of words:

Jackie: "Mr. Rickey, are you looking for a Negro who is afraid to fight back?"

Branch: "Robinson, I'm looking for a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back."

Minor Leagues and Racism

Jackie first went to play in the minor leagues for the Montreal Royals. He had to deal with constant racism. Sometimes the other team wouldn't show up for the game because of Jackie. Other times people would yell at him, threaten him, or throw things at him. Through all of this, Jackie held his anger inside and played hard. He led the league with a .349 batting average and won the league's MVP award.

Breaking the Color Barrier

At the start of the 1947 baseball season, Robinson was called up to join the Brooklyn Dodgers. On April 15, 1947 he became the first African-American to play baseball in the major leagues. Once again, Jackie faced all sorts of racial abuse from the fans and from other baseball players. He even received death threats. However, once again Jackie showed the courage to not fight back. He lived up to his promise to Branch Rickey and focused on playing baseball. That year the Dodgers won the pennant and Jackie was named Rookie of the Year.

MLB Career

Over the next ten years, Jackie Robinson was one of the best baseball players in the major leagues. He had a career batting average of .311, hit 137 home runs, and had 197 stolen bases. He was

Legacy

Jackie Robinson's breaking of the color barrier in baseball paved the way for other African-American players to join the major leagues. He also led the way for racial integration into other areas of Ameri-can life. In 1962 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Robinson died of a heart attack on Oc-tober 24, 1972.

Interesting Facts about Jackie Robinson His middle name was Roosevelt in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. Robinson's grandparents grew up as slaves in Georgia. There have been several movies made about Robinson's life including the 1950 film The

Jackie Robinson Story and the 2013 movie 42. In 1997, Major League Baseball retired Robinson's jersey number, 42, for the entire league. April 15th is celebrated by baseball as Jackie Robinson Day. On this day all players and man-

agers wear the number 42 in honor of Jackie.

Willie Mays Biography for Kids

Name: _____________________ Maniac Magee

William Howard Mays, Jr. was born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. Willie’s parents were both athletic. His father played baseball on a semi-pro team at the steel mill where he worked, and his mother was a cham-pion sprinter in school. His father taught Willie to play baseball. Willie joined the semi-pro team at his father’s mill when he was 14, and played center field with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro League, the ma-jor league for African American players at the time, when he was 16. He could only play in home games be-cause his father didn’t want Willie to miss school. He was signed by the Giants right after graduation.

He played on Giant farm teams for two years. When Willie was playing in Trenton, he was the only black player on the team. He was jeered by fans because of his color, received death threats, and had to stay in a “colored-only” hotel across town from the rest of the players. Willie said that some of his white teammates would sneak in the window of his hotel room and sleep on the floor to make sure he was safe, and to let him know he was one of them. He moved up to MLB in 1951. That year, he was named “Rookie of the Year.”

In 1952, Willie was drafted into the U.S. Army. He worked as an instructor in physical training and played base-ball for the Fort Eustis team. The Giants did not win the NL pennant during the two seasons Willie was in the army. In 1954, he returned to the Giants, and they won the World Series. Willie made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch to help the Giants win the first game. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in the history of baseball. Joe DiMaggio said Willie Mays had the greatest throwing arm in baseball. Willie had 7,095 putouts, which is the all-time record for an outfielder. Known as the “Say Hey Kid,” Mays has been called the greatest all-around baseball player because of his speed, hitting and fielding ability. He played in 24 All-Star games, had 12 Gold Glove awards, earned the Roberto Clemente Award in 1971 and was twice named the Na-tional League MVP. His career batting average was .302. He had 3,283 hits, 1,903 RBIs and 660 career home runs. He hit four HRs in one game in 1961. Mays played for the Giants until 1972, when he was traded to the New York Mets.

In 1973, Willie retired from baseball. He worked as a batting coach for the Mets and in public relations with Bally’s Resorts and Colgate-Palmolive. In 1986, Willie Mays was named to a lifetime position as a special assis-tant to the president of the San Francisco Giants. He enjoys playing golf and traveling. He is on the board of

When Barry tied Willie’s Home Run record, Willie met Barry at home plate and passed him the ceremonial Olympic torch that Willie had carried for four blocks in San Francisco during the journey of the torch leading up to the 2002 Winter Olympics. Willie had had the torch decorated with the number 660 outlined in diamonds.

Willie was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, and his number 24 was retired by the San Francisco Gi-ants in 1972. The address of the Giants stadium (AT&T Park) is 24 Willie Mays Plaza. There is a statue of Willie in front of the main entrance to the stadium.

American RevolutionValley Forge

Valley Forge was where the American Continental Army made camp during the winter of 1777-1778. It was here that the American forces became a true fighting unit. Valley Forge is often called the birth-place of the American Army.

Where is Valley Forge?

Valley Forge is located in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania around 25 miles northwest of Phil-adelphia.

Why did they camp there?

George Washington chose to make the winter camp at Valley Forge for several reasons. First, it was close to Philadelphia where the British were camping for the winter. He could keep an eye on the British and protect the people of Pennsylvania. At the same time it was far enough from the British so that he would have plenty of warning if they decided to attack.

Valley Forge was also a good place to defend if the army was attacked. There were high areas in Mount Joy and Mount Misery to make fortifications. There also was a river, the Schuylkill River, that served as a barrier to the north.

Who were the American leaders?

It was at Valley Forge where the Continental Army turned into a trained fighting force. There were three leaders in particular who played a key role in building the army.

Page 67: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Magee General George Washington - George Washington was the commander-in-chief of the Conti-

nental Army during the American Revolution. His leadership and resolve played a big part in the United States gaining its independence from Britain.

General Friedrich von Steuben - Friedrich von Steuben was a Prussian born military leader who served as the inspector general under Washington. He took on the task of training the Continental Army. It was through von Steuben's daily drills, even in the cold of winter at Valley Forge, that the soldiers of the Continental Army learned the tactics and discipline of a true fighting force.

General Marquis de Lafayette - Marquis de Lafayette was a French military leader who joined Washington's staff at Valley Forge. He worked for no pay and didn't ask for special quarters or treatment. Lafayette would later become an important commander at several key battles.

 General von Steuben

Were the conditions bad?

The conditions that the soldiers had to endure at Valley Forge were horrible. They had to deal with cold, wet, and snowy weather. They were often hungry, as food was scarce. Many of the soldiers didn't have warm clothing or even shoes as their shoes had worn out on the long march to the valley. There were few blankets as well.

Living in cold, damp, and crowded log cabins made matters even worse because it allowed disease and sickness to spread quickly throughout the camp. Diseases such as typhoid fever, pneumonia, and smallpox took the lives of many soldiers. Of the 10,000 men who began the winter at Valley Forge, around 2,500 died before the spring.

Interesting Facts About the Valley Forge Valley Forge was the first state park in Pennsylvania. Today it is known as the Valley Forge

National Historic Park. The area was named after an iron forge located at nearby Valley Creek. General Friedrich von Steuben wrote the Revolutionary War Drill Manual which became the

standard drill manual used by the US forces up until the War of 1812. It is thought that only around 1/3 of the men who arrived in Valley Forge had shoes. Some families of the soldiers including wives, sisters, and children made camp near the sol-

diers and helped them survive the winter. They were called Camp Followers. General von Steuben arrived at Valley Forge with a letter of recommendation from Benjamin

Franklin. His energy and knowledge of training and drilling men made an immediate impact on the soldiers at the camp.

Segregation: Past of Present?Think about your school: Do most students belong to one racial group? Do certain groups of

kids hang out together? Do some kids go in one direction while others walk the opposite way? Do

Page 70: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Mageemost kids stick to their own groups, not inviting other students to join? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your school or community may have qualities of segregation.

Segregation means the separation of people or groups of people depending on their race or social class. Segregation doesn’t allow equal opportunities for all people. When schools or communities are segregated, people within those communities suffer on many levels.

A little more than five decades ago, most schools and public spaces were segregated in the United States. There were separate schools, separate parks, separate stores—separate everything – for blacks and whites. The two races were expected and encouraged to stick with “their own kind.” However, in 1954, something happened that should have changed the course of American history.

A group of parents in Topeka, Kansas challenged their city’s Board of Education in court. The parents urged that segregated schools were unequal and unfair. The landmark Supreme Court case, known as Brown vs. Board of Ed, ruled “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” The ruling meant schools had to become integrated. Black students and white students were allowed to attend the same schools. They were supposed to have equal educational opportunities. The U.S. was supposed to be on its way towards an equal future for all.

Modern Segregation

Today, however, segregation is still alive and well. In cities across the U.S., a person’s race often plays a big part in which community he will live or which school he will attend. What’s the difference between present segregation and past segregation? Today, it’s not just a black and white issue. In the early 1990s, courts stopped enforcing integration—especially in the South. This caused a new wave of segregation to sweep through the U.S. A recent study by The Civil Rights Project showed that in 1991, 39% of black students in Southern states attended schools with a white majority. In 2003, only 29% of black students attended the majority white schools. But, the most alarming studies have shown that Latino and Asian-American students are quickly falling victim to segregation.

The states of New York and California have been found to be the most segregated states for Latino students. In California, 47% of Latino students attend schools that have 90% to 100% non-white students. In New York, the number of Latino students attending racially segregated schools swells to 58%.

Why has the idea of integration been lost for these students? Experts say it’s because of housing and neighborhood communities. In neighborhoods where housing prices are high, it’s rare to see black, Latino, or immigrant Asian families purchasing homes. In those exclusive neighborhoods, schools tend to have more money—that means students who attend these schools often get a better education. Families that can’t afford to live in high-priced communities and attend these well-funded schools suffer.

Often, neighborhoods with low housing prices and low taxes also have less school funding. That means schools in these neighborhoods don’t have the same amount of money to spend on education as schools in higher-priced communities. Schools with a majority of non-white students usually get fewer resources, a decreased number of courses, and lower-paid teachers.

Page 71: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeLuckily, families in some communities aren’t accepting this huge problem. In the 1990s,

Milo Sheff and 16 other black, Latino, and white students from Hartford, CT, challenged Connecticut’s Governor and Board of Education. The case, known as Sheff vs. O’Neill, showed the huge differences between Hartford’s racially mixed city schools and the mostly white suburban schools. City schools were poor and did not provide the same learning opportunities, facilities, or teachers as the rich suburban schools.

The families in the case demanded that the state provide equal educational opportunities for all students, regardless of race or income. In 1996, the state’s Supreme Court found that this segregation went against the state’s constitution. The ruling opened the doors for city students to attend suburban schools and gain a better education. Even now, however, many Hartford students still suffer. City schools still are not equally funded. Students who choose to attend suburban schools often have to travel 30 minutes or more by bus in order to get a better education. This is neither fair nor equal.

Families, neighborhoods, and school systems should work harder to ensure that all students are given an equal education. That means fighting for equal funding and integration of students in all schools. It means continuing the ideas that began changing our nation after Brown vs. Board of Ed.

What does school segregation mean for today’s kids? By now, segregation should have been a thing of the past. But, as you can see, it’s definitely still very much a part of the present. Students in segregated schools don’t get an equal education. It’s difficult for these students to go onto college and work in high-paying careers. With poor schooling and lower-paid jobs, the cycle of poverty will continue into the future—and so will segregation.

About Homelessness

Page 74: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Magee

Homelessness is an issue that affects people of every age and from every country. If you walk down the street in many big cities in the United States, you might notice people sleeping on the sidewalk or begging for food or money. These individuals are very visible to passersby, and it is difficult to ignore them. But there are also homeless people who do not sleep on the streets. They are not as visible to the public eye, but they are also homeless. These people often spend their nights sleeping in shelters, which provide food, rooms, and often a variety of social services (like daycare). We might not see these people on the streets, but it does not mean that they aren’t suffering.

When thinking about homelessness, one of the first questions that might come to mind is: why are people homeless? People become homeless for a variety of reasons, often outside of their own personal control. Two key reasons have been identified on why people become homeless. The first is a lack of affordable housing. The second is poverty, or the condition of being poor. The government is usually responsible for providing affordable housing to people and families in need. It builds large apartment buildings or housing developments for people who cannot afford to live elsewhere. Sometimes there is not enough affordable housing for all the people who need it. Those who are unable to secure housing may become homeless.

Homelessness and poverty are quite clearly linked. Poor people must often choose between such important things as buying food or paying for medical care versus paying the rent. When poor people are faced with these difficult decisions, housing is often the first expense to be dropped because it generally requires the largest amount of money. Many of the homeless in America are simply unable to find jobs due to a lack of opportunity. Others are mentally ill or addicted to drugs. Still others who are homeless have previously relied on public assistance but have lost that assistance for one reason or another. An example of a public assistance program is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides help for people who struggle to afford healthy and nutritious food.

There are three distinct kinds of homelessness. The first is called chronic homelessness, and it represents the group of people who move from shelter to shelter in a seemingly

Page 75: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Mageenever-ending cycle. Often, the chronically homeless are older, and often suffer from disabilities or addiction.

The second type of homelessness is called transitional homelessness, and it describes people who must enter a shelter for a short period of time. For example, if they are evicted from their homes for not being able to pay the rent, they might go into a shelter or enter government-based transitional housing. They may live there for up to two years until they are able to get back on their feet.

The third kind of homelessness is called episodic homelessness, which accounts for people who move in and out of shelters at various points throughout their life. Those who experience episodic homelessness usually have difficulty maintaining steady employment. People who are considered transitionally homeless and those who are episodically homeless are often young.

Homelessness rises when people are unable to find or keep jobs. But it also affects people who are not even employed in the first place: children under sixteen years old. As minors, they are not legally allowed to work. According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, one in every 45 children experiences homelessness each year. Most families that experience homelessness are made up of a mother and her children. The National Center on Family Homelessness reports that 29 percent of adults in homeless families in the United States are working. Yet the wages are often not enough to support the various needs of a family, like healthcare, food, and shelter. Furthermore, many families try to stay out of shelters. Shelters can be noisy, overcrowded, and stressful places for both children and parents. These families would often rather stay at the homes of friends or relatives, or even sleep in their cars. Families that experience homelessness in any situation are under a ton of stress, due to the lack of stability and privacy.

There are no simple solutions to this major social issue. But homelessness affects too many people around the world to be ignored.

More kids want to play on traveling basketball teamsBy Minneapolis Star Tribune, adapted by Newsela staff02.26.15

lyn Nets in Boston, Oct. 22, 2014. Photo: AP Photo/Elise Amendola

In Minnesota, younger and younger boys are playing on competitive basketball teams. These teams play to win. The parents and players must make big commitments to play on these teams.

The newest trend is fourth-grade teams with 9- and 10-year-old players. Paul Schmidt coaches one of these teams in Edina, Minnesota. He gives his players complicated strategies. In one game, they came up with a plan. They ran around the players on the other team. They were able to beat them by 19 points.

After the game, Schmidt quickly gathered his team. He only had a couple minutes to coach them be-fore the next game started.

Play Ball!

Youth competitive basketball in Minnesota is tough. The players grow up fast. They are playing sports a lot for such a young age. Some people like competitive sports for kids. Others think it is a bad thing. Minnesota is famous for competitive youth hockey. Now basketball may become popular, too.

More and more boys and girls are playing competitive basketball at younger ages. Some teams have third-graders, even second-graders.

Page 79: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac MageeTen years ago, 20 teams played in a tournament for fourth-grade traveling teams. Last year, 115 teams played.

Todd Breyfogle used to play college basketball. Still, he was not sure if he should sign up his son, Easton, to play traveling basketball. In the end, he did. Soon, Breyfogle was sitting court-side, yelling to the team. "Come on!"

Schmidt’s team will play at least 40 games this winter. It costs $500 to join the team, if you make it. Out of the 44 fourth-graders who tried out, 15 were not good enough. People who did not live in the area were brought in to help judge the players.

Traveling Teams Are Tough

“It’s just really fun, especially if you’re on a really good team,” said Lleyton, Schmidt’s 10-year-old son.

It is not the kids who are asking to play competitive basketball, but the parents. According to Rich Penick, director of a state basketball group, “the parents are driving it.”

Deborah Edwards works for the Positive Coaching Alliance in Minnesota. The group tries to focus on how sports can help young people to grow. The group wants young athletes to focus less on just win-ning and losing.

Edwards says she shakes her head when she sees what’s happening. “Youth sports is so scheduled — it’s over-scheduled,” she said. “ I think these traveling basketball teams just add to the over-sched-uling of the kids.”

It’s not easy for parents or young players who participate in a traveling team. It takes time, travel, money. Some players, just 9 years old, may not be ready for tough experiences, like getting cut.

Team Support

In Edina, passionate parents have different ways of supporting their young athletes.

Giovanna Ingram has a son named Vinnie. She pays $75 per hour to have Vinnie get extra training. He is trained by a former professional basketball player.

She hopes her son will become good enough at basketball to earn a scholarship to a good college. He could go to college for free in exchange for playing for the school team.

She quickly added that the main thing is "to keep him out of trouble, (keep) him healthy — maybe get a scholarship in the end.”

Basketball parent Mike Munson sits on the bench with a tablet, like an iPad. He uses an app to track the team’s shots.

“It shows shot selection, where we make shots, where we don’t,” he said. He emails the results to an assistant coach after each game. “It’s something they can use when they have practice."

California bullet train might be one of the world's cheapest rides in 2028By Los Angeles Times, adapted by Newsela staff06.03.15

droncelli, File

LOS ANGELES — California is trying to build a high-speed train called a bullet train. Rides on the train could be some of the cheapest high-speed rail rides in the world, the Los Angeles Times found.

California residents voted to have the state set aside billions of dollars for the project seven years ago. Back then, they were told that a ride from Los Angeles to San Francisco would cost about $50. Now the state said an average ticket would cost $86. Although the price increased by $36, the train would still be one of the least expensive high-speed trips in the world.

No one can really say now how much a ride on the bullet train will actually cost.

The train is not expected to be running full-time until 2028. At that point, the prices will be set with the help of a private company, said Jeff Morales. He is in charge of the California High-Speed Rail Au-thority. The group is planning the train project and it will run the bullet train when it's done.

Train Must Pay For Itself, The Law Says

Millions of travelers will look at the fares to decide if they will ride the high-speed train. They could also choose to fly or drive instead. Ticket prices are important for figuring out how much money the

Page 83: Allen Independent School District / Overview€¦  · Web viewRed Tails tells the historic story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter pilots. JANUARY

Name: _____________________ Maniac Mageetrains make. State law says the high-speed train system cannot get extra money from the state. It must pay for itself.

Morales and other state officials say the system will quickly make money. But experts warn that you cannot count on the predictions. No one knows how many people will ride the train. They say the state could have to keep paying for the system.

Whenever you try to predict things more than five years away, you are just guessing, said Lisa Schweitzer. She is a transportation expert at the University of Southern California. Things can change a lot in five years, she said.

Between 18 million and 31 million passengers are expected to ride the train each year to start. By 2030, ticket sales are expected to hit $2 billion a year. That figure would be about $700 million a year more than it would cost to operate the bullet train.

A California Bargain At 20 Cents A Mile

A ticket for $86 would be a bargain, the Times said. The fare would be about 20 cents a mile.

The average fare on Italy’s bullet train was 25 cents a mile. The fare in China was 22 cents a mile.

The French bullet train from Paris to Lyon is often said to make money. However, it has a fare of 52 cents a mile. The German bullet train from Hanover to Wurzburg charges 46 cents a mile.

Amtrak’s Acela system on the East Coast is the closest thing to high-speed rail in the United States. It charges an average of about 50 cents a mile.

Money Maker Or Money Loser?

The train system is expected to make extra money from advertising. Payments from business at train stations would also bring in money. Still, some outside experts wonder if ticket sales will pay for all the costs of running the train.

“The train will lose money," said Joseph Vranich. It will need money from the state, he said. Vranich used to be president of a U.S. group that wants the country to have high-speed trains.

William Grindley is a business expert. He does not like the high-speed train project. Grindley said the system will lose money unless ticket prices go up a lot and a lot of people ride the trains. He said the bullet train definitely will not make money.

Grindley wrote a report about the bullet train in 2012. The report said the state would have to pay mil-lions of dollars to support the bullet train "forever."

Morales, the rail authority’s chief executive, said Grindley’s group is wrong. He said his agency’s rid-ership forecasts have been checked by outside experts.
