All of these works begin with very little: a note or two, something not far removed from silence, a seed that gives rise to an entire world of consonance and dissonance, monologue and dialogue (and trialogue), growth and retrenchment, height and depth. All were written by musicians from different parts of what used to be the Soviet Union: Knaifel and Paiberdin are Russian, Gubaidulina also (though of Tatar heritage), and Kancheli is Georgian. The Goeyvaerts Trio worked extensively with all of these composers personally, and the result comes near to perfection!

From 1337 to 1453, France and England waged a ruthless combat, with the Hundred Years’ War plunging Europe into violence and horror. Yet far from the battlefields, spiritual and intellectual activity flourished. More than ever, people prayed and sang. In England, despite a culture profoundly marked by French taste, a school of composition specific to the country developed at the end of the 13th century. Almost everywhere in the realm, diverse works came into being, punctuating and enlivening daily life. The program of the Céladon Ensemble spans more than a century of music and alternates chants in Latin and songs in English, frequently evoking the figure of the Virgin Mary. These pieces of music, of simple construction and often of folk inspiration, pack a powerful impact. They provide a vibrant illustration of the variety of musical and poetic compositions of that troubled era, which fluctuated between barbarity and naïveté.

BIRTWISTLE: String Quartet: The Tree of Strings, Nine Movements for String Quartet

Harrison Birtwistle is unquestionably one of the most frequently performed British composers on the contemporary scene. Although bowed strings are the raison d’être of this disc, their absence is no less conspicuous in the composer’s early and mature works, for he waited until he was nearly 60 before writing for string quartet, and the works brought together here remain his only original works written exclusively for strings. The recording of these works by the Arditti Quartet, dedicatee of the String Quartet: The Tree of Strings (which was composed for them) reflects the most recent development resulting from Birtwistle’s working with this ensemble over the past 20 years.

The “Debussy, Music and the Arts” exhibition, organized by Paris’s Musée d’Orsay, proposes to evoke the musician’s major encounters with contemporary artists and poets. Paintings, drawings, and pastels—along with first editions of Mallarmé, Gide, and Louÿs—recall the musician’s admirations and friendships. His music will be present in major autograph scores, rare editions, and projects of sets and costumes for Pelléas, the ballets on the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Jeux, and The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. This choice of historic recordings proposed by Jean-Michel Nectoux, curator of the exhibition, will allow for listening to the conductors, pianists—including Debussy himself—and singers who were his first interpreters, such as Ninon Vallin, Jane Bathori, Claire Croiza, Mary Garden & Hector Dufranne (Mélisande and Golaud in the Pelléas of 1902), Ricardo Viñes, Camille Chevillard, or Toscanini. A real treasure trove!

Les Musiciens de Saint-JulienFrançois Lazarevitch: directorRobert Getchell: tenor

34 selections of Scottish airs and dances, including John Anderson My Jo, The Flower of Edinburgh, Patrick McDonald’s Jig, Lady Mary Hay’s Scotch Measure, and more

One of the most fascinating aspects of Scottish music in the 18th century is the extent to which traditional and classical music interacted. By the early 19th century, Scottish songs had become popular in Europe too, and were being arranged by composers such as Haydn and Beethoven. The performances on this CD honor that lively and sensitive interaction which, perhaps uniquely, gives expression to an ideal of social and artistic cohesion. This new recording is a fine addition to Alpha’s Chants de la Terre series, devoted to pieces stemming from oral tradition that have had a considerable impact on the written repertoire and continue to enchant the ear. Lively dances and exquisite Scottish airs are beautifully sung by tenor Robert Getchell. Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, led by François Lazarevitch, take us once again into fascinating regions inhabited by grace and pure delight.

“The spare, emotional world of György Kurtág and that of his not-so-spare compatriot, György Ligeti, made interesting bedfellows in this astonishing concert at Zankel Hall … Ms. Zagorinskaya was in complete control of Kurtág’s unconventional meldings of music and text, and the UMZE Ensemble provided exquisitely calibrated touches of sound.” — Musicweb-Interntional

On January 31, 2009 in the Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, one concert in the series “Extremely Hungary” was dedicated jointly to the works of Ligeti and Kurtág. This disc contains the live recording of that Carnegie Hall concert. The UMZE Ensemble has appeared at the most prestigious Hungarian festivals and performs internationally, continuing its ambition to keep the now-classic compositions of the 20th century in the repertoire and to bring the most recent compositions of both Hungarian and foreign composers to the listener.

CERHA: Konzert (Concerto) for Percussion & Orchestra • Impulse

Last year celebrated the 85th birthday of Austrian composer Friedrich Cerha, best known for his orchestra cycle “Spiegel” and the completion of the third act of Alban Berg’s Lulu. This new record combines two orchestral pieces from recent years, both played by one of the finest orchestras in the world—the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Pierre Boulez and Peter Eötvös. The demanding solo part of the Konzert for Percussion & Orchestra is played by young percussion star Martin Grubinger.

APERGHIS: Contretemps • SEESAW • Parlando • Teeter-totter

Music connoisseurs around the world know Georges Aperghis, above all, as a man of music theatre. His “purely instrumental music” without scenic ingredients often receives less notice than his spectacular theatrical works, despite the fact that the Paris-based composer has by no means neglected the instrumental genre. He has also been consistently producing arioso scenes for voice and ensemble, as well as chamber music. Over the past few years, this last area of his work has once again come into focus, and this CD brings together three important pieces for ensemble from the past 10 years.

ENESCO: Trio in G minor (premiere) • Sérénade Lointaine (premiere) • Trio in A minor

George Enescu shares with Liszt, Rachmaninov, and Busoni the misfortune of having been a very great virtuoso, both violinist and pianist, who has had to wait a long time before full justice is done to him as a composer. For their first disc, the three young members of the all-female Trio Brancusi present three piano trios by Enesco, including premiere recordings of the Trio in G minor and the Sérénade Lointaine.

J.S. BACH: Sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin, BWV 1014–1019

To mark her return to the recording studio after releasing CDs of Tartini and Albinoni (both awarded a Diapason d’Or), Chiara Banchini joins forces with Jörg Andreas Bötticher to present her version of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin BWV 1014–1019. This interpretation is notable, among other features, for the use of a German harpsichord with the disposition 16’, 8’, 8’, 4’, freely reconstructed by Matthias Kramer (Hamburg, 2006) after Christian Zell.

Alice Ader’s Debussy disc Erato won all the awards in the specialist press upon its release 20 years ago, and is still regarded as an unequalled benchmark. Now, this unconventional pianist at last unveils her recording of the complete Ravel piano works. And what better moment could there be than Debussy Year to present these two hours of music in dialogue, “en Miroirs” as it were, with the oeuvre of “Claude de France”? Ravel—hot-blooded Swiss watchmaker, discreet Lisztian, a mediocre pianist who made such extreme demands on his colleagues—deserves only the finest interpreters: those who take the time to explore his deepest recesses. Alice Ader, light-years away from the flashy gestures often encountered in this music, takes us to the very heart of one of the most secretive composers of his time.

BRAHMS: Sonata for Two Pianos in F minor, Op. 34b • SCHUMANN (tr. Clara Schumann): Piano Quintet in E-flat, Op. 44, arr. for piano four hands

This recording brings together two major works from the history of romantic chamber music. It embraces Robert Schumann, the composer; Clara, his transcriber and indefatigable performer of his work; and Johannes Brahms, their intimate friend. The program revisits their masterpieces: Schumann’s Quintet Op. 44 and Brahms’ Quintet Op. 34, and the four-handed version of Schumann’s Quintet may prove to be a discovery! Arranged by Clara Schumann just after the composer’s death, this work bears witness to the importance of the practice of four-hand piano works in the 19th century as a driver of musical progress.

CORKINE: The Second Book of Ayres

“Cantar alla viola,” the art of accompanying the voice with the viola da gamba, is the largely forgotten technique of using a bowed instrument to play polyphony and harmony as an accompaniment to the voice. The rediscovery of these methods inspired Nadine Balbeisi and Fernando Marin to create their duo of the same name. Detailed descriptions of the practice of this delicate manner of accompanying the voice are found in sources such as “Regola Rubertina” by Sylvestro Ganassi (1542) and in “Il libro del cortegliano” by Baldassare Castiglione, Venezia (1528). As suggested by Ganassi’s instructions, Fernando Marín adapts madrigals and songs from the Renaissance and early Baroque for the voice and viol.

Walter Arlen is one of the last living composers of the generation the Nazis sought to extinguish. After his flight from Vienna in 1939, he made a significant contribution to the cultural transfer of Austrian musical tradition not only as the music critic of the Los Angeles Times, but also as the founder of the Music Department of Loyola Marymount University. This double CD offers a broad cross-section of his important oeuvre.

With his 32 piano sonatas, Beethoven made one of the most pronounced developments in the history of piano music, completing the Classical Age almost single-handedly and setting off Romanticism. Here, Yoshiko Okada—who has studied with Yvonne Loriod, Nikita Magaloff, and Alicia de Larrocha and has performed several times in Carnegie Hall—presents three particularly striking examples of Beethoven’s sonatas.

On her CD Doppelgänger, young Bulgarian pianist Dora Deliyska exclusively presents Franz Liszt’s piano arrangements of Schubert’s Lieder, the texts of which are printed in the booklet. As is explained in the accompanying text, Liszt treats Schubert’s Lieder with great respect, unlike his arrangements of other composers. Here, we can also hear Dora Deliyska’s love of song, which she developed at an early age as the daughter of an opera singer.

SHAW: 36 songs

“Burnside’s delightfully poetic pianism proves irresistible.” — Classic FM Magazine

Despite a compositional career spanning both World Wars, remarkably little is known about Martin Shaw’s music. It has yet to enjoy the revival of interest that has benefited the legacies of close friends such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Ireland. His songs range from the whimsical and effervescent to the deeply melancholic, and will be a revelation to many. In rescuing these gems from obscurity, Iain Burnside and his singers give new life to an unjustly neglected figure.

“Quite extraordinarily beautiful and right.” — The Times

“I listened entranced.” — Gramophone

A recognized authority in 20th-century and contemporary music, Peter Hill turns for the first time on disc to another of his lifelong preoccupations: the music of J.S. Bach. On this new recording, Hill brings his customary scholarly acumen and crystalline musical intelligence to bear on Book II of the “48.”

Stone Records is delighted to announce its latest release, a CD of Australian art songs performed by a brilliant Australian-based recital duo. Soprano Lisa Harper-Brown is a favorite of the opera-going audience in Sydney, and David Wickham is one of the country’s most sought-after accompanists. The repertoire will be new to a lot of listeners, although the style is familiar, being informed by the recognizable sound of 20th-century English song. All of the five composers featured are well-known Australian musicians, and between them they have established a new cultural identity: Australian art song. With detailed notes provided by the accompanist, and full texts of the songs, this disc provides an excellent introduction to a largely uncharted area of classical music.

BAX: Sonata • FISKE: Sonata • HAMILTON: Three Nocturnes, Op. 6 • WOOD: Paraphrase on Bird of Paradise, Op. 26 • RODNEY BENNETT: Duo Concertante

This collection of works were mostly dedicated to and performed by the great British clarinetist Frederick Thurston. He did a huge amount to encourage composers of the day to write for his instrument, and in 1952 he was awarded the CBE and the Cobbett Gold Medal for services to chamber music.

After reading music at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, Nicholas Cox studied clarinet at the Musikhochschule in Hanover with Professor Hans Deinzer. Appointed Principal Clarinet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992, he has played as Guest Principal with most British orchestras, and has performed concertos with the RLPO, the City of London Sinfonia, the NDR Radio Orchestra in Hanover, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist he has appeared at the Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls, and the Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Huddersfield and Brighton Festivals.

Ian Buckle enjoys a varied freelance career, working as soloist, accompanist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist, and teacher. As a concerto soloist, Ian has appeared alongside conductors Carl Davis, Elgar Howarth, Gerard Schwarz, Yan Pascal Tortelier, and John Wilson, and with orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Opera North, Sinfonia Viva, the Manchester Concert Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. As an accompanist he is in constant demand, performing and recording with singers and instrumentalists throughout the UK and in Europe.

Homage in music can express different things: gratitude towards a benefactor, a more personal greeting to a friend or acquaintance, recognition of a colleague’s talent, or a testament raised in memory of a teacher or other departed one. Paying homage to a late musician with a tombeau was already an ancient tradition in the time of Marin Marais. Initially, tombeaux were instrumental transcriptions of Middle Age and Renaissance vocal lamentations, and were developed around the middle of the 17th century for the lute, then for the harpsichord by Louis Couperin and Jean-Henri d’Anglebert, and finally for the viola da gamba by Sainte-Colombe. The Tombeaux of Marin Marais are amongst the most original and expressive of those written for the viol, while the last examples of this tradition are the Tombeau pour Marais le Cadet, by Marin Marais (1725) and the Tombeau de Marais le Père, by Charles Dollé (1737). A program full of worship, grandeur, and sadness.

BACH: Sonata for Oboe Solo in G minor After a fine recording made by the Lingua Franca Ensemble of German music for oboe ensemble, Benoît Laurent now presents a fascinating survey of the baroque oboe repertoire. The French oboe enjoyed considerable success in church music, opera, and chamber music from the moment of its arrival in Germany, for the instrument’s charms seduced every composer of the period. This recording presents works by composers from Telemann to Bach; it demonstrates the development of musical style throughout the baroque era and ends with the first intimations of the pre-classical style.

BOCCHERINI: Quartets for 2 fortepianos, Op. 26, Nos. 1–6

Luigi Boccherini’s six Quartets Op. 26, composed in 1778, were transcribed for two harpsichords by an anonymous author at the end of the century and are housed, in manuscript form, in Dresden’s Sächsische Landesbibliothek. These transcriptions were probably made during the regency of the Elector of Saxony, Frederick Augustus (1763–1806), who owned several others, all preserved in Dresden.

MARINO: Sonata a cinque, Op. 3 • Sonat a quattro, Op. 6 • Concerto a Quattro

The pieces recorded here represent the climax of this musician’s considerable production for strings and basso continuo. The Sonate a cinque (1697) are elegant and ambitious, while the Sonate a quattro (1706) are more intimate. All these pieces are characterized by a perfect balance between a rigorous, monodic style and a marked lyricism in the slow movements.

Musiques à la ChabotterieMarc-Antoine CHARPENTIERMusic for Molière’s Plays

La Simphonie du Marais/Hugo Reyne: conductor

CHARPENTIER: Le dépit amoureux Overture • La Comtesse d’Escarbagnas Overture • Le mariage forcé: Intermezzi • Le Malade imaginare: Prologue & Intermezzo • Le Sicilien Overture & Serenade Molière and Lully are known as the founders of the “comédie-ballet.” In 1762, after seven years of partnership, the collaboration came to an end and Molière, looking for a new musical partner, met Marc-Antoine Charpentier. While the former was approaching the last part of his life, the latter was just starting his career as musician. His name was associated with Molière’s for the first time for the double staging of Mariage forcé and La Comtesse d’Esarbagnas. Later, Le Malade imaginaire was the crowning achievement of all “comédie-ballets” conceived by Molière. La Simphonie du Marais here proposes this last piece in Charpentier’s version, following the restraints imposed by Lully through royal decrees.

Robert SCHUMANNWorks for cello and piano

France Springuel: cello/Jan Vermeulen: fortepiano

SCHUMANN: Märchenbilder, Op. 113 • Fünf Stücke im Volkston, Op. 102 • Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 • Drei Romanzen, Op. 94 • Adagio & Allegro, Op. 70

A mere glance at Robert Schumann’s catalog of works tells us that he was subject to whims. As such, the first decade of his existence as a composer was almost exclusively dedicated to piano music. In 1840, he threw himself into the song repertoire, 1841 became the year of the symphony, and 1842 the year of chamber music. The following years Schumann was troubled by an unstable physical and mental condition. However, in 1849 he had enough energy for a genuine compositional outburst. Except for the Märchenbilder Op. 113 (from 1851), all works on the CD were composed during this, the composer’s self-described “most fertile year.”

Henry BUTLERThe Division Violist

Roberto Gini, Marco Angilella: bass viols/Sara Dieci: harpsichord, organ/Elena Spotti: harp

BUTLER: Divisions upon a Ground in D, G, E minor (2), A minor, C, D minor & F • Prelude and Sonata in E minor • Prelude and Divisions upon a Ground in F • Divisions upon a Ground in D minor, Pavana di Spagna

As a virtuoso on the viola da gamba, Henry Butler’s fame stretched beyond the region and epoch in which he was employed. This is remarkable, since his work was never published during his lifetime because of an exclusive contract with his employer, the Spanish court. Butler’s style of Divisions is very elaborate, and demonstrates a profound knowledge of the instrument. In his music one can find a level of technical difficulty that remains unmatched in all successive epochs.

The works on this recording are written by composers who themselves played the violin. The three works differ greatly from one another, yet each is expressive, idiomatic, and reveals close connections to a living performance tradition. Sisters Elise & Henninge have played together for more than 30 years, and the repertoire heard here has been a part of their musical upbringing. MOZART (tr. Czerny): Requiem, K. 626

This Requiem version is extremely interesting because it is not—and it doesn’t aim to be—a mere transcription of Mozart’s work; instead, it is a translation into a new specifically pianistic language, casting a new light on the masterpiece and enhancing its most refined patterns and even the slightest contrapuntal play. Carl Czerny gives us his personal interpretation of Mozart’s masterpiece, but with the utmost respect for the original composition and with the same musical intentions of the Salzburg genius.

These popular melodies, born from the heart, prove to be surprisingly modern. They speak of the battles and hopes of the Jewish people, but the themes are universal. The original tunes are treated in an instrumental version, without lyrics. Paola Devoti graduated in Italy at Conservatory “G. Verdi “ of Milan with the highest marks, when she was very young. She attended masterclasses in France with Jamet, and also attended the Superior Conservatory of Geneva.

The Fair at Sorochyntsi, May Night, and Christmas Eve are all masterpieces that have seen rebirth on the operatic stage in compositions by Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Outstanding contemporary composer Rodion Shchedrin set himself a very different task in the 20th century. While continuing the Gogolian traditions in Russian operatic music, he turned to the great writer’s realistic prose—the epic poem “Dead Souls.” The composer worked on it for 10 years, undertaking a seemingly impossible task of realizing all the richness of the ideas and characters in opera. Humor and tragedy, emotional tension and extraordinary poetic value all make Dead Souls a masterpiece of the operatic art and the composer’s greatest achievement.

Premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR in Moscow, 1977. Directed by Boris Pokrovsky, designed for stage by Valeri Levental, and conducted by Yuri Temirkanov.

MUSSORGSKY: Khovanshchina (complete opera)

Awarded the Prix “Michel Hofmann” du Disque Academie Charles Cros in France in 1976, and First Prize for the section of foreign recordings in Japan in 1975! Famous critic Vladimir Stasov, a close friend of Mussorgsky, brought the story of Khovanshchina to his attention, and the composer dedicated this work to him. Mussorgsky began to compose the opera in the summer of 1872, when Boris Godunov had not been completed. He was engrossed in the new opera, and had every reason to say, “I am living in Khovanshchina like I used to be in Boris.” Mussorgsky wrote the libretto himself, without relying on a literary source. He wrote in one of his letters that he was possessed with one thought—“to tell people a new word of friendship and love, a direct word and one as wide as the Russian fields, a word resonating with the truth from a humble musician yet a fighter for the right idea of the art.” He said this word in his great works, among which the popular musical drama Khovanshchina takes one of the highest places.
