THE CLASSICS LABELS p.6–7

The Classics Labels is a British-based group of record labels owned by three London musicians—Victoria Soames Samek (clarinet), Sebastian Comberti (cello), and Paul Archibald (trumpet)—who together bring many years of experience in all fields of performance. The group is comprised of several specialist instrumental labels—Clarinet Classics, Saxophone Classics, Cello Classics, and Brass Classics—that feature their respective instruments in world-class performances of core repertoire, groundbreaking new recordings, period instrument performances, and historical reissues. In addition, The Classics Labels has expanded to embrace more varied repertoire released on Omnibus Classics and the mid-price LIR Classics. The objective of The Classics Labels is to give the finest musicians the opportunity to fulfill creative ambitions and to extend the boundaries of their musical expression. The Classics Labels come to Allegro Classical via Launch International.

Without doubt, Monteverdi was the greatest of the early Baroque European composers. He revolutionized the music of the theatre and the church by his dramatic and imaginative use of voices and instruments, and by his daring harmonies and rhythms. Next to his Vespers of 1610, the Selva morale e spirituale of 1641 is his most significant and virtuosic collection of sacred music. This second volume of The

Sixteen’s celebrated series includes the Messa à 4 da cappella; the celebrated first volume is also available on CORO.

“Philippe Cuper is one of the best representatives of the clarinet, soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician … in all areas he plays with the same ease, the same comforting serenity.” — Le Monde de la Musique

An important new recording of the complete works of Louis Cahuzac played by Philippe Cuper (Principal Clarinet of the Paris National Opera Orchestra and international soloist on his third CD for Clarinet Classics), who has direct professorial lineage from Louis Cahuzac. One of the great clarinet players of the 20th century, Cahuzac was also prolific as a recording artist. His work as a composer is less widely known, so it is with particular pride that Clarinet Classics presents the only current CD devoted to his music.

OCKEGHEM: Missa pro defunctis • DE LA RUE: Missa pro fidelibus defunctis

For their third CD on the Challenge label, Cappella Pratensis turns the pages back to the very beginnings of the tradition of settings of the Requiem mass. The Requiems by Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1410–1497) and Pierre de la Rue (c. 1452–1518) form an ideal pairing, as they are the first polyphonic versions of the Mass for the Dead from the brilliant composers of the Franco-Flemish school. By bringing these two works together, Cappella Pratensis offers the chance to hear the beginnings of one of the great traditions in Western music as

well as two profound musical translations of the words of consolation that mark the passing of our fellow travelers in life.

Royal Flemish PhiharmonicEdo de Waart: conductor

R. STRAUSS: An Alpine Symphony, Op. 64

A modern, stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic demonstrates an artistic flair that allows for a variety of styles—from classical to contemporary—in a historically authentic manner. Chief Conductor Edo de Waart is responsible

for the orchestra’s main repertoire. Drawing on his vast experience as former Chief Conductor of the Netherlands RPO, San Francisco Symphony, and Hong Kong Philharmonic, he contributes to the unique character of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic.

The Royal Flemish Philharmonic is proud to present its recordings in three high-quality series, each with its distinct character: A-List brings you the great masterpieces, interpreted by renowned conductors, Belgian Boutique focuses on major pieces from the Belgian

orchestral repertoire, and Cutting Edge introduces contemporary orchestral music by Belgian and foreign composers.

This first CD in the A-List series is a live recording of Richard Strauss’ majestic Alpine Symphony. Strauss’ final large-scale symphonic poem is immensely spectacular and haunting. This grandiose orchestral piece was performed and recorded live in May 2011. It was Edo de Waart’s first performance with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic since the announcement of his appointment as Chief Conductor; the

recording is therefore a highly symbolic opener for the orchestra’s new label!

HENDERICKX: Tejas (What does the sound of the universe look like?) • Skriet • Le visioni di paura • Variations

The future is everything to the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, and their Cutting Edge series introduces contemporary orchestral music by Belgian and foreign composers. This first CD in the series puts the spotlight on Belgian composer Wim Henderickx, who is not only very familiar with the orchestra, but is also an extraordinary and fascinating composer. The CD consists of four orchestral pieces by Henderickx, opening with the grandiose Tejas. Henderickx composed this piece especially for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in 2009. In combination with the other tracks on the CD, it gives an overview of the composer’s body of work and challenges the listeners to look for musical differences and similarities.

Jef MAES: Overture concertante • Arthur MEULEMANS: Concerto for Orchestra No. 1 • Concerto for Orchestra No. 2 • Norbert ROSSEAU: Concerto for Orchestra No. 1, Op. 37—3rd mvt, Scherzo

The Belgian Boutique series focuses on major pieces from the Belgian orchestral repertoire; the Royal Flemish Philharmonic has deliberately chosen to widen its repertoire to include the musical heritage of the whole country, and wants to provoke the listener by confronting similar works by different composers. The first CD in the Belgian Boutique series unites three composers who have worked with the “concertante” possibilities of symphonic orchestras, using the Overture Concertante by Jef Maes as a starting point. Maes was one of the co-founders of the RFP in the 1950s, and this piece was the “club song” of the orchestra for a long time!

YSAŸE: Solo Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor • 14 short pieces by Paradis, Wieniawski, Paganini, Shostakovich, Elgar, Mendelssohn, Sarasate, Mussorgsky, Kreisler, Glazunov, Brahms & Massenet

Since making his Avie recording debut in 2005, Rudens Turku has amassed a devoted following for his effortless virtuosity. Following albums devoted to solo works, duos, and concertos, Rudens returns with a personal selection of miniatures and encores for violin and piano. Sweet Remembrance—the subtitle of Jascha Heifetz’s arrangement of Mendelssohn’s Song without Words—ranges from the romantic Salut d’amour by Elgar, Schön Rosmarin by Kreisler, and Massenet’s Meditation from Thaïs, to the energetic Scherzo from Brahms’ F-A-E Sonata and Shostakovich’s exhilarating Preludium. Interspersed with miniature masterpieces by great violinist-composers such as Paganini, Sarasate, Kreisler, and Wienawski, the album boldly concludes with Ysaÿe’s commanding Second Sonata, itself written in remembrance of another great violinist, Jacques Thibaud.

“Yakov Kreizberg was one of the finest conductors of his generation, a man whose musicianship, intellect, and integrity produced performances of a passion and intensity far superior to those by some better-known names.” — The Independent

The Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1856 and gave its first concert on December 14, 1856, with an ensemble of 15 musicians, at the Maison de jeux (a future casino). The orchestra’s most recent principal conductor was Yakov Kreizberg, who was named to the post in October 2007. He held the post until his passing in March 2011. The release of this recording has been made possible thanks to valuable feedback from soloists David Lefèvre, Thierry Amadi, Matthieu Bloch, Nicolas Dosa, Matthias Persson, and Julien Bourgeois.

MONTEVERDI: Il Combattimento di Tancredi & Clorinda • GOEHR: Paraphrase for solo clarinet on the madrigal “Il Combattimento” by Monteverdi • QUAGLIATI: Il carro de fedeltà d’amore, donné sur un char à Rome en 1611

At the junction of madrigal, opera, and intermezzo, Il Combattimento di Tancredi & Clorinda marks a clear milestone in the evolution of Monteverdi’s full attention to the emotions in the combination oratione–armonia. Shown for the first time at the Carnival of Venice in 1624, and published in 1638 in the “Eighth Book of Madrigals of War and Love,” the Combattimento innovates by its multiplicity of feelings and contradictory moods that are at the heart of the poem “Jerusalem Delivered” by Torquato Tasso. This stunning masterpiece is supplemented by the mini-opera Il carro de fedeltà d’amore by Paolo Quagliati and the “Paraphrase on the madrigal Il Combattimento by Monteverdi,” composed in 1969 by Alexander Goehr.

The program includes famous tunes by Lully, arranged by contemporaries; an unpublished suite by Marin Marais; and some flute duets by Hotteterre.

This program consists of the most representative and virtuoso works of the golden age of the sackbut. The gesture of the musician, who both draws (“sacquer”) and pushes (“bouter”), gives the instrument its name.

raméeCorina MartiI dilettosi fiori: Late 14th Century Instrumental Music Corina Marti: flutes, clavisimbalum

Short pieces from the late 14th century

The late 14th-century instrumental music that forms the core of this release comes from the two most important surviving sources of this repertoire: the London and Faenza codices. On her solo debut, Corina Marti achieves a remarkable variety by juxtaposing the sound of recorders (including the double recorder) with that of a clavisimbalum, a reconstruction of the earliest form of a harpsichord.

MARTIN °U: Violin Concerto No. 2, H. 293 • Symphony No. 1, H. 289

To graciously round off his time as conductor of the National Orchestra of Belgium, Walter Weller has chosen for his sixth album a composer he holds dear to his heart, offering the listener a chronologically coherent program. The liner notes are written by Harry Halbreich, the undisputed authority on Bohuslav Martin °u.

J.S. BACH: Sonata for violin and harpsichord in E minor, BWV 1023 (transcription for viola da gamba in D minor) • Sonata for obbligato harpsichord and viola da gamba in G, BWV 1027 • Toccata for harpsichord in C minor, BWV 911 • Sonata for obbligato harpsichord and viola da gamba in D, BWV 1028 • Sonata for obbligato harpsichord and viola da gamba in G minor, BWV 1029

Imagined as a concert that Bach could have instigated, this disc explores the Cantor’s art of transcription and reveals the wealth of influences the Germanic empire was exposed to in the first half of the 18th century. The album is the first recorded by two rising stars whose tremendous energy and complicity has conferred greater depth to this concert.

Almost unknown to most, Camillo Sivori was Paganini’s only and greatly beloved pupil. This album offers up the sarcastic humor of Jean Wiener, the finesse of Jean-Michel Damase, and the charm of Jean-Jacques Laubry and René Berthelot. Placing these with contemporary compositions by the likes of Stéphane Blet and young composer Jacob Tardien, Katsaris demonstrates the enormous diversity of the current musical language.

TALLIS: The Lamentations of Jeremiah • FERRABOSCO THE YOUNGER: Lamentations • BYRD: Lamentations • PARSLEY: Lamentations • MUNDY: De Lamentationes Jeremiae (premiere)

“Their freshness is an asset … demonstrates the choir’s versatility.” — Gramophone

Not since the early 1600s have the refulgent strains of John Mundy’s Lamentations setting been heard in Windsor. It has been reconstructed especially for this recording, made in Windsor Castle’s Albert Memorial Chapel by gracious permission of Her Majesty The Queen. The men’s voices resonate in the resplendent chapel acoustic, transcending the desolation of the texts’ anguished laments in singing of extraordinary conviction and certainty.

BOYLE: Arrivals and Departures • Reeling • Sonata • Capriccio on the Anniversary of a Beloved Master • Studies for the one in the middle • Tatty’s Dance • Phaethon’s Dancing Lesson (Piano Trio No. 2)

This year, 2010 British Composer Award winner Rory Boyle celebrates his 60th birthday. Young virtuoso pianist James Willshire’s debut recording explores the full gamut of Boyle’s compositional personality, from the cragginess of his finely wrought Sonata to the intensely human lyricism of Tatty’s Dancing (itself a 60th birthday present for Boyle’s wife).

MOZART: Coronation Mass in C, K. 317 • Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339

Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum and Charivari Agréable come together for the first time in vividly communicative interpretations of three of Mozart’s sacred masterpieces. The forces are very much as Mozart intended—a period orchestra, an all-male chorus, and soloists drawn from the choir (including 2009 BBC Chorister of the Year Laurence Kilsby). Under Benjamin Nicholas’s spirited direction, these performances bristle with energy and the invigorating freshness of youth.

Frédéric CHOPIN24 Preludes, Op. 28 & Sonata in B minor Tatiana Shebanova: piano

CHOPIN: 24 Preludes, Op. 28 • Sonata in B minor • Prelude in A • Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 45

Realized shortly before the pianist’s death, one could say that this CD comprises the credo of her performance art and artistic testament. It is also a moving testimonial to the dignity with which she committed herself musically to the realization of the project, despite her long battle with illness. This unique publication of the National Fryderyk Chopin Institute allows us to trace the evolution of Chopin’s style and reassess Tatiana Shebanova’s interpretations of Chopin, and her personal contribution to the composer’s anniversary year.
