When looking at ways to do just this, we explored a very cool Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern that we then took through a number of exercises across the fretboard. One of concepts that we touched upon with this Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern , and that I like to apply to my jazz guitar soloing ideas, is alternating keys a tritone apart when running through a pattern, creating a “snake” like feel as the line weaves in and out of the tonic key. The premise for this approach is simple, take any scale pattern you know, run it once through the key you’re in , then run it through the same scale, say Ionian in both cases, a tritone from the original key, and keep this going back and forth. So, for example you could alternate a pattern, such as the Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern below, between G and Db as you descending the neck, until coming to rest at the end of your phrase. Let’s check out the Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern that I worked out with my student, an 8- note phrase, that we’ll first learn in the original key of G Mixolydian before adding the tritone key of Db to the fray. Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern for Jazz GuitarI was teaching a lesson the other day, and the student was asking about how to get scale

patterns to sound more “hip,” more modern and less like they were just running up or down ascale. When looking at ways to do just this, we explored a very cool Allan Holdsworth ScalePattern that we then took through a number of exercises across the fretboard.

One of concepts that we touched upon with this Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern , and that I liketo apply to my jazz guitar soloing ideas, is alternating keys a tritone apart when running througha pattern, creating a “snake” like feel as the line weaves in and out of the tonic key.

The premise for this approach is simple, take any scale pattern you know, run it once throughthe key you’re in , then run it through the same scale, say Ionian in both cases, a tritone fromthe original key, and keep this going back and forth.

So, for example you could alternate a pattern, such as the Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern below, between G and Db as you descending the neck, until coming to rest at the end of your

phrase.

Let’s check out the Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern that I worked out with my student, an 8-note phrase, that we’ll first learn in the original key of G Mixolydian before adding the tritone key of Db to the fray.

If you are unfamiliar with the Mixolydian scale , you might want to check out my page of

Mixolydian Scale Fingerings for Guitar to brush up on these cool and often used sounds.

With the Allan Holdsworth scale pattern under our fingers and in our ears over one chord, wecan now add in the tritone substitution , in this case we’ll be using a Db7 chord in every second bar, Db being a tritone away from G, the original key.

The scale pattern will remain the same, but now it will switch keys from G7 to Db7 as it descendsthe neck, providing an “ inside-outside ” feel to the phrase that is very modern, and at least to

my ears, very cool sounding.Notice how the same scale pattern repeats every two bars , just one octave lower.

So, the notes in the first two bars are the same as the notes in bars 3 and 4 , just one octavelower.

As well, it is a great idea to practice this line with a static G7 chord programmed into Band in aBox , or record yourself coming a G7 chord, so that your ears have a chance to digest this new sound, as well as your brain and fingers.

Just for fun, I then added a large number of slurs to the lick to give it an even more AllanHoldsworth or Kurt Rosenwinkel feel to the line.

The notes from the original Allan Holdsworth Scale Pattern remain the same, but this time youonly pick the first note of each string, so you wind up with groups of 8 notes in a row after that initial pick. This is tough to do, so take your time, go slow and practice with your metronome.

Not only will this line give you a cool, modern sounding lick in your vocabulary , but it will also

build hand strength and dexterity as you bring these extended slurs into the fold.

8 Comments1. becks, September 2, 2011:

hi Matt, when we use the tritone Db scale instead of G (mixolydian) scale, we should use thesame mode (so Db mixolydian)?thanks!

2. Matt Warnock , September 2, 2011:Hey Becks,I like using Mixo for both, G and Db, just keeps the sound of each harmonic area closely related. But you could also do Lydian Dominant, so Gb Melodic Minor starting on Db, or really any other Dominant sound that you like as long as you can run the pattern smoothly

through both of the keys.

3. Kent, April 27, 2012:Whoops! You notated an E natural at the end of bars 2 and 4. Should be an E flat, shouldn’t it? Cool lesson, thanks!
