We are already one month into our
4-H year! Now is the time to start
thinking about what project areas you
plan on exploring and deepening. To
help deepen your experience, you
may want to think about how to broaden your horizons, you may want to get involved in 4-H activities at the
regional or state level, you may want to join a project club, or even run for an officer election! With 4-H the
sky is the limit and it is your adventure to create! Be sure to celebrate everything 4-H during National 4-H
Week and throughout the month of October. There are a lot of things each of you should be proud of and this
is a great time to reflect! With 4-H Spirit, Morgan Bjerke

2017-2018 4-H RE-ENROLLMENT
Are you new to 4-H and unsure of what 4-H has to offer you? You can join a 4-H club when you enter 4th grade. 4-H is
open to youth up to 12th grade. As a 4-H member you have many opportunities to participate in different activities. Like
building rockets, designing clothes, leaning about computers, helping your community, and making new friends. You name it, you can do it through 4-H.
To get started, contact Morgan at the Allamakee County Extension Office to find a club that fits your interests.
Morgan can be reached at [email protected] or 563-568-6345.
Attention New Members: Please save the date to attend New Member Night on Tuesday, November 14!
LEARN MORE ABOUT 4-H
RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS/NATIONAL 4-H WEEK National 4-H Week is, October 1-7. Now is the time to start recruiting new members! What is your club going to do to
recruit new members and celebrate National 4-H Week? Here are a few ideas for you and your club to help promote 4-
H and recruit new members:
Wear 4-H apparel to school.
Display 4-H yard signs at ever club meeting and club event (they can be purchased for $10 at the Extension Office).
Put up posters, exhibits, or other displays in libraries, schools, store fronts (ask permission first and please let the Extension Office know).
Decorate your home or a business with sidewalk chalk art.
Be a spokesperson! Ask if you can do an announcement or presentation at school or during a school event. Talk to your friends about 4-H opportunities.
If you refer a friend to Allamakee 4-H and they join by October 23, you will receive 1 Clover Buck to be redeemed at the Clover Store on November 5. Have your friend tell Extension Staff who referred them to earn your clover buck.
Interested youth and parents can stop into the Extension Office for enrollment papers and for more information!
Extension Staff are challenging all clubs to recruit new members to the Allamakee County 4-H Program! The club with
the most new members by October 23 will each receive 1 clover buck per 4-H member! Start recruiting today!
Some examples of items you can purchase at the Clover Store on November 5:
CLUB CHALLENGE
YOUTH IN ACTION AWARDS
Do you know a 4-H'er who has a great 4-H story to tell? Do you know a 4-H'er with a passion for Agriculture, Citizenship, Healthy Living, or STEM? Every 4-H'er has a story and every story is worth telling! Encourage these youth to share their stories and apply for the 2018 4-H Youth in Action Awards, http://4-h.org/parents/4-h-youth-in-action/. Application is open August 1 to October 23.

AWARD NOMINATIONS
RECORD BOOK SUGGESTED ORDER & TIPS
CLUB OFFICER AWARDS
The 4-H Youth Development Committee encourages ALL 4-H’ers to complete a record book. The record book forms
are available online at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/4-h-forms.
Remember Record Books should reflect the past 4-H Year, 2016-2017.
Suggested Order for All Members:
1) Title Page with photo
2) Expected Standards
3) 4-H Club Program (Optional)
4) 4-H Yearly Summary. May include newspaper clippings and photos from current year. This is where you can com-pile a 4-H yearly story. Keep ribbons in a different book.
5) 4-H Projects Tabbed. Project records, project worksheets, related clippings, and photos. Do not include goal sheets. Keep the current year project work on the top of all records.
General Tips
1) Be neat
2) Check math, spelling and grammar
3) Use blue or black ink if you prefer to write it instead of typing. (Younger members may use pencil)
4) Keep your thoughts clear and to the point. Say everything you want to say in a concise manner.
5) It is not necessary to write a Project Record for each exhibit. For example, if you brought three photography exhib-its to the fair, it is best to condense all the information from those three exhibits onto one Project Record Form.
DO NOT Include
Ribbons
Goal Sheets
Stall Cards
Your actual project
Award Certificates
*Rule of Thumb: Don’t make your record book a scrapbook.
We recommend having two 4-H books, all the listed extras need to
be kept and can be put in an extra 4-H book.
Attention all presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers, historians, photographers, reporters, and recreation
leaders — you have an opportunity to apply for an officer award. Officers may be any age. No interviews are required,
just a brief summary of your experience as officer. You may only apply for one officer award, per year. Applications can
be picked up at the Extension Office or online www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/4-h-forms and are due to the
office by October 1.
Three special awards will be given out at the Awards Program during the Soup Supper on November 5. These awards
honor adults for their dedication and support of the Allamakee County 4-H Program. Nomination forms are available at
the Extension Office. Please take a few minutes at your next 4-H meeting to nominate someone special. Nomination
forms are due October 1.
Junior and Intermediate record books are due to your club leaders. Youth applying for the County Livestock Champion
Awards need to turn their record book into the Extension Office by October 1. Please have your leader review the rec-
ord book prior to turning the book into the Extension Office for the selection of the County Livestock Champion Award.
Senior record books and award applications are due October 1 to the Extension Office.
RECORD BOOKS
OVERALL SENIOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Interviews will be held October 10 at the Extension Office for senior members applying for Overall Senior Achievement
Awards. We will mail you a postcard with your interview time. Please mark the awards you are applying for on the eval-
uation sheet. Record Books are due to the Extension Office by October 1.

CLUB INFORMATION
Attention 4-6th Graders: The County Council will be hosting the Annual Halloween Party on Saturday, October 28 at
6:00 PM at the Fair Grounds Pavilion. Prizes will be distributed for the best costumes. Be sure to bring a friend and join
the fun! Youth do not have to be in 4-H to attend. Admission is free with a canned good item.
Sunday, October 8, Ride at Yellow River (park in day use area). Ride at 12:30 PM, potluck and fair review af-
ter. Because this is a 4-H sponsored event, those 18 and younger, 4-H/FFA members must wear a helmet. Adults and
those over 18 do not have to wear a helmet (unless they are still 4-H/FFA members). Helmets will be provided for those
needing one. Please call the Allamakee County Extension Office 563-568-6345 or email [email protected] if you
have any questions.
PREMIUM CHECKS
JUNIOR HALLOWEEN PARTY
All fair exhibitors will be receiving a premium check from your club leader. Premiums are awarded to youth exhibiting
both livestock and non-livestock exhibits. Please note, there is a limit of 5 exhibits per project area. You may notice the
initials NP on your check stub. NP stands for No Premium. Any questions, please contact the Extension Office at 563-
568-6345.
SILENT AUCTION BASKETS This is the time to start thinking about those baskets that each club donates to the Award/Soup Supper and Silent Auc-
tion event on November 5. Start thinking about your basket “theme” and the items that people will want to bid on. The
funds raised from the Silent Auction pay for a portion of the 4-H program fee. Bidding starts at $15 so plan accordingly.
Our goal is to raise $4,000. Basket deadline is Monday, October 23 at the Extension Office.
Still thinking of ideas? The Youth Development Committee suggests adding personal club touches to your ‘basket
theme’. Examples; make a club quilt, projects made by 4-H’ers or by the club and signed by all club members.
SOUP SUPPER/RE-WARDS DAY
Make plans to attend the Soup Supper, Silent Auction, and RE-Wards Day on Sunday, November 5 at the Fairgrounds
Pavilion. Ludlow Future Farmers and Mississippi Mad Scientists are on the club rotation for 2017 for the Soup Sup-
per, schedules and details will be emailed to club leaders.
