Pastor Notes

A s August turns into September, our thoughts turn to Labor Day and the end of summer . It seems to go

all too fast. Even the children going back to school noticed how quickly the time has gone. Are they growing older and wiser? Only the good Lord knows. We welcome all of the students returning to Assumption School and especially the students attending our school for the first time from other schools. May this coming year bring the grace of the Holy Spirit to guide them in their educational pursuits. Traditionally, Labor Day marks the end of the summer season and the beginning of a more hectic pace of life. I sure hope that you avail yourself of the extra time that summer afforded for prayer and recollection. While we celebrate the work we do with Labor Day, we do so by relaxing and enjoying one another as family. Our work carries a dignity because we share in God’s creative power by means of it. All work is important for God has made all of us dependent on each other’s work for the world to run smoothly and God’s kingdom to be made visible. As God’s human instruments, we need refreshment because of our limitations, and it is prayer and relaxation that provide this. We have to search for a balance between work, prayer, and recreation. At times this is a life-long effort, but for those who persevere in achieving this balance, the results are rewarding.

I wish all of you a very happy, safe, and blessed holiday weekend.

May God bless you for the work you do on behalf of your families and your parish.

A S S C Once again, we are collecting basic school supply items for distribution at the Thea Bowman Center and for our children in Haiti. Bins will be in the back of the church through Labor Day weekend. Basic items such as pens, rulers, solar calculators, maps, folders, glue sticks, paper, colored pencils, notebooks, and quadrille type composition books may be placed in bins in back of church.

Soccer balls, ball pumps, and jump ropes are real treasurers. Your thoughtful donation is always appreciated!!

Many blessings. Members of Hands and Hearts with Haiti and

Human Care Committees.

The Rectory will be closed Monday, September 3rd for Labor Day

Lord Hear Our Prayers For the following parishioners, family members or friends that are ill.

Page 4 Church of the Assumption September 2, 2018

D ’ C “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” James 1: 22 Sometimes we have ‘reasons’ why we cannot do things-we are too tired, too old, too sick, too needy. It is just too hard! We are too busy with work, with children, with other responsibilities. Yet some of the best “prayers” are people confined by illness and disability. Some of the wisest listeners are the elderly, who have a lifetime of patience and wisdom to draw on. Some of the most generous givers are those who have en-dured poverty and suffering themselves. Some of the most ad-mired organizers are those who delegate and let other people shine. And let us not forget the heroes who put their lives on the line in time of crisis. Not everyone is called to heroism, but all of us are called to live generously and selflessly. The opportunities are endless: in our families, our parish, our neighborhood, and in the world. Try to balance prayer, action, and financial giving. A busy moth-er with three toddlers can hardly spend hours in prayer or at church. A man who must work two jobs to support his family has limited time to volunteer, and a person on a tiny fixed income cannot give large donations to the church or charity. However, the busy mother can start her day with a prayer, the hardworking man can help at a parish event, and the person on a limited in-come can donate a dollar here and there. Everyone can be a doer. What are you going to do?

30th Annual Appalachian Collection will support the following local charitable organization this year

Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Diocese of Cleveland This year, the Appalachian Collection will support people in need

residing in the Lorain, Ohio area. The Knights of Columbus of Our Lady of Charity Council 14406 would appreciate donations of household goods, including small appliances, cooking utensils,

dishes, sheets, blankets, towels, all clothing & toys. Monetary do-nations will also be accepted & are greatly appreciated. Receipts

will be provided for all donations. “When considering your donation, please keep in mind that broken

items or items that are harshly used are more of a burden to the Collection than a blessing.”

A good rule of thumb defining a worthy donation - donate only items that you would donate to your neighbor & they would use.

A complete list of items needed can be found at www.kofc14406.org/Collection. Please review the list to determine if the item you plan on donating is needed. If you wish to learn more about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, their website is www.svdpcle.org Please bring your donations to the 53’ trailer in the St. Basil church parking lot on:

Saturday, September 22nd 8:00am until 6:00pm items must be brought to the above collection point.

Many volunteers are needed to help with this project. If you are able to help in any capacity, please sign up at www.kofc14406.org/Collection. If you have further questions, please contact Ken Pe-ters at 216-849-1434.

COLLECT BLESSINGS FOR HEAVEN Please consider volunteering for the 1 DAY 30th Annual Appala-chian Collection on Saturday Sept 22, in the St. Basil the Great

parking lot. To register for a time slot & view photos from last year’s event, please visit www.kofc14406.org/Collection & com-plete the scheduling sheet. All that is involved is removing dona-

tions from cars & placing them in the 53’ long trailers. It is as simple and easy as that.

Please call Ken Peters at 216-849-1434 with questions – hope to see you there. Please consider helping - we make it fun.

May God bless you and your family.

The A R S is organizing its Annual Pilgrimage for Saturday, October 6th. Mark the date on your calendar!! Further details are coming. All parishioners are welcome to join us!!

R E Mrs. Barbara Tomusko, Directory of Religious Education September – dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary PSR begins September 10. Classroom assignments will go out this week to those who have turned in Registration Forms /Tuition. During the month of September Catholics observe integral cele-brations of our faith, among them the Nativity of Mary on Sept 8, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sept 14, the Feast of Our La-dy of Sorrows on Sept 15, and the Feast of the Archangels on Sept 29. These events recall some of our core beliefs – the Crea-tion of the angels before time, that Mary was chosen to bear God’s Son and her sharing in the redemption of the world through the Passion and Death of Christ. Taking time each day to meditate on our beliefs can bring us to a deeper understanding of the mys-teries of our faith and draw us closer to God’s Holy Spirit, Who leads us to truth. Families can celebrate Mary’s birthday by mak-ing cupcakes, creating crafts, and by reading about the life of St Anne and Joachim, her parents, as well as Mary’s life here: http://www.salvemariaregina.info/SalveMariaRegina/SMR-124.html this website for Catholic families has Mary crafts: http://www.catholicicing.com/ideas-for-celebrating-the-nativity-of-mary-with-kids/ What’s the difference between a Cross and a Crucifix? The cross is a reminder of crucifixion, but a Crucifix is a Catholic symbol with the Corpus of Jesus, who obtained our salvation, on it. Who are the Archangels? Learn more here: https://www.catholiccompany.com/getfed/feast-of-the-archangels/ Begin that prayer life you’ve always wished for – meditate! http://www.beginningcatholic.com/christian-meditation “No mat-ter how sinful one may have been, if he has devotion to Mary, it is impossible that he be lost." -Saint Hilary of Poitiers

Dear Assumption Parishioners and Families, We have completed 3 days of school our first week and are now in the middle of week #2. Of course, we hit the 90degree heat wave. The Staff and students survived the hot temps well. God bless our air conditioning. Our 8th graders are looking forward to their Retreat Day, Thursday, Aug. 30th. I know this will be a faith-filled day for them. This upcoming week of Sept. 3rd is a 4 day week. The Academy has Labor Day off on Monday, Sept. 3rd. We welcome our Pre-K students for their orientation day on Tues., Sept. 4th. They will be involved in pre-assessments for a couple of days. We are happy to have these little ones in the building. This coming Thursday, Sept. 6th is “Meet the Teachers” Night. Parents are invited to attend to hear about the school year, the curriculum, and upcoming school activities / events. The evening begins at 6pm and concludes at 7:30pm. The teachers look forward to sharing information with our parents. As I mentioned before, please join us for School Mases Friday mornings. We would enjoy celebrating the Eucharist with our parishioners.
