Jarltech and its sister company, Tauris, show an impressive continued growth in the 2010 fiscal year. Just as in previous years, the number of incoming orders increased at a two­digit rate; from 2009 to 2010 by more than 30%, totalling nearly 65 million euros. Over 1,500 parcels are shipped every day by the group, which now has more than 100 employees worldwide. Since 2010, the group boasts new foreign offices in Madrid, Spain and Veilje, Denmark. The focus on the European market is clearly maintained.

An additional 1.5 million euros were invested in 2010 for expansion measures of the logis­tics centre in Usingen. The headquarters now totals 1,000 sqm of office space and 2,000 sqm of storage space. The outdoor facilities have been optimised for improved truck shipping. The enormous growth rate requires constant supervising of space allo­cation, which must focus on high product availability and fast turnover. The group does not outsource stock; rather, the group relies on internal warehouse management to offer customers a competitive edge.

This includes special logistics agreements that ensure swift delivery of goods. For instance, we contracted nightly extra tours to Austria with our partner, DPD.

The extension of the group’s product portfolio will be a focal point in 2011. The new distri­bution agreements with Getac, NCR and HP will substantially round out the product choice.

GMVA uses Datalogic Mobile devices for optimising maintenance and plant controlling processes

The waste incineration plant ­ »Gemein­schafts­Müll­Verbrennungsanalage Nieder­rhein GmbH« (GMVA) is one of the largest­waste incineration plants in Germany. Here, about 700,000 tons of waste is incinerated each year. At GMVA more than 200 employees make sure that the waste incineration process proceeds smoothly. But this task is not easy. The dust, dirt and odors produced are all a potential health threat for the employees. For this reason, industrial safety standards in waste incineration plants have been incre­ased in recent years, resulting in optimized work conditions. Today, the plants are equip­ped with modern filters and flue­gas cleaning machines. Respirator masks are also availa­ble for all employees. In order to guarantee full functionality of the masks, a predefined maintenance cycle was created that fore­sees mask checks and maintenance after each use. The mobile solution from Datalogic Mobile and PS Computing supports the full life cycle documentation of each mask, as well as control of the plant’s machinery and components. During the incineration pro­cess, contamina tive substances, such as fine dust can escape into the surrounding enviro­nment. Even though strict safety precautions are applied, employees are obliged to wear respirator masks during some specific pro­cesses. GMVA uses two hundred masks a year with the possibility of 50 masks in circu­lation after one week’s revision. Therefore, these masks must be serviced after each use to assure the safety of the operators. Mask maintenance procedures take between two to four weeks. Within this period the masks are unusable. Once the maintenance proce­dures are complete, the masks are checked for cracks, and the seals and filter membrane are controlled.

Employees’ well-being assuredMuch effort is needed to manually control and fully document the use and maintenance

cycle of two hundred masks with a risk of potential errors. The new system using the Memor from Datalogic Mobile assures an optimized process with automatic identifica­tion. Each mask carries a barcode for identi­fication. The barcode contains the individual information for each mask that is scanned whenever the mask is going out or coming in. This allows the masks to be identified with the status and history fully documented. The data stored within the Memor is passed via the cradle and the PS Computing Interface to the GMVA system. The delivery note is also stored in the system so it can check the expiration date. In this manner, when an em­ployee picks up a respirator mask, the Memor can indicate its status so the employee knows whether or not the mask is OK for use, or if it has expired. This mobile system guarantees compliance with the maintenance phases in a fast and safe manner. »The status of each mask is auto matically documented, captured and then transferred via USB­interface to our host system. In this way, we do not lose any information and the process itself is fast and reli able,« states Michael Braitschink, Techni­cal Service Manager at GMVA.

Full ControlThe solution from Datalogic Mobile and PS Computing is also used for plant control. Since GMVA is a power plant operator, the company is obliged to mark all the components to comply with the power plant operating mar­king system. The values measured at specific points in the plant are posted in the database. The values are then transferred to the Memor by a USB interface and a route is set, which is checked by the employees. The detailed

route plan controls each point, as none of them can be neglected. At the cauldron point, for exam ple, the pressure and temperature are controlled, and the values are entered

into the Memor, which compares them with the minimum and maximum values already stored in the device. If the actual values differ greatly from the minimum or maximum va­lue, the scanner emits a warning signal. In addition, component status is stored and all results, as, for example, »defect«, »leaky« or »makes noises« are collected in an access database. The old system was slow and in­accurate when dealing with all this informa­tion while the new system provides full, fast and correct in formation within the GMVA­System and enables further processing of this data.

A solution that easily fits in one hand»With the help of the Memor we are now able to read machine data that a human being could not access directly. Even with a 50 cm distance to the component, the mobile computer captures the data reliably,« says Braitschink. The high memory capacity of the Memor supports the GMVA application perfectly. Even dirty signs that are hardly re­cognizable by the human eye, are read by the Memor correctly. »The Memor is very easy to use because it is almost as small as a mobile phone and can be handled like one,« mentions Braitschink. The mobile computer, Memor from Datalogic Mobile is pocket­sized. Thanks to the latest technologies, such as Windows Mobile 6.1 and 2D Imager, the Memor packs all the latest innovations in a small device. With an IP54 protection class the Memor can also be used in indust­rial environments.
