JAN. 19, 2020 FROM THE PASTOR’S CORNER

2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The depictions of Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan are many. From paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci to stained glass windows by Tiffany, the central elements are the same: Jesus and his cousin, John the Baptist, in the Jordan River with the Holy Spirit overhead as a dove. As Catholics, we enjoy the fine work of the talented artists, but it does not begin to fully convey the depth and significance of Christ’s baptism and what it truly means for us. The word “baptize” is Greek in origin (baptizein), which means to plunge or immerse, and baptism is the first and probably the most important sacrament of the Church. It is through baptism that we are brought into the Church. It is God’s most precious gift to us, and it signifies our liberation from sin and that the Holy Spirit dwells within us. It has been said that by our own baptism we became mission-ary disciples of Christ and as such we need to be personally involved and actively engaged in living a faith-filled life, partic-ipating in a Christian community of faith and love. For is this not the very reason we belong to the Church, to be engaged in a community of faith and love? We could expound upon the many benefits of baptism, but the more challenging question, one worthy of our reflection, is how are we using this precious gift? Maybe a good place for us to start is to reflect back when many of us, as parents pre-senting our children for baptism or as godparents, renewed our baptismal promises. These promises are as good a guidepost as any for us to continue to follow. We might ask ourselves if, as engaged Christians, we are role models for our children. Do we worship together as a family and nurture our children to develop a strong faith? The same questions can be extended beyond our homes and families, to those with whom we interact in our workplaces and communities; do we present ourselves as engaged Christians and serve as role models? One might dare say all of us have come up short in answer to these questions, but do not despair, for our God is a loving and forgiving God. Equally as important, through our baptism, the gift of the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Through the Holy Spirt, God is personal to each of us and has the power to transform us into the people we want to be. The gift of the Holy Spirit that God gave us at our baptism is ours to call upon when we need guidance. The Holy Spirit can help us to live the lives we are capable of – lives as en-gaged Christians--lives of compassion and love for members of our families as well as strangers on the street. Maybe it is time for us to “plunge” ourselves back into our faith.

Las representaciones del bautismo de Cristo en el río Jordán son muchas. Desde pinturas de Leonardo Da Vinci hasta vitrales de Tiffany. Los elemen-tos centrales son los mismos: Jesús y su primo, Juan el Bautista, en el río Jordán con el Espíritu Santo sobre sus cabezas como una paloma. Como católicos, disfrutamos el excelente trabajo de los artistas talentosos, pero estos no alcanzan a transmitir completamente la profundidad y el significa-do del bautismo de Cristo y lo que realmente significa para nosotros. La palabra "bautizar" es de origen griego (baptizein), que significa sumergir-se, y el bautismo es el primer y probablemente el sacramento más impor-tante de la Iglesia. Es a través del bautismo que somos traídos a la Iglesia. Es el regalo más preciado de Dios para nosotros, y significa nuestra libera-ción del pecado y que el Espíritu Santo mora en nosotros. Se ha dicho que por nuestro propio bautismo nos convertimos en discípulos misioneros de Cristo y, como tal, debemos involucrarnos personalmente y participar activamente en una vida llena de fe, participando en una comuni-dad cristiana de fe y amor. Porque, ¿no es esta la razón por la que pertene-cemos a la Iglesia, para participar en una comunidad de fe y amor? Podríamos exponer los muchos beneficios del bautismo, pero la pregunta más desafiante, una digna de nuestra reflexión, es ¿cómo estamos usando este precioso regalo? Quizás un buen lugar para comenzar es reflexionar cuando muchos de nosotros, como padres que presentamos a nuestros hijos para el bautismo o como padrinos, renovamos nuestras promesas bautismales. Estas promesas son una guía tan buena como cualquier otra que podamos seguir. Podríamos preguntarnos si, como cristianos comprometidos, somos mode-los a seguir para nuestros hijos. ¿Adoramos juntos como una familia y nutrimos a nuestros hijos para desarrollar una fe fuerte? Las mismas pre-guntas pueden extenderse más allá de nuestros hogares y familias, a aque-llos con quienes interactuamos en nuestros lugares de trabajo y comunida-des; ¿Nos presentamos como cristianos comprometidos y servimos como modelos a seguir? Uno podría atreverse a decir que todos nos hemos quedado cortos en res-ponder a estas preguntas, pero no se desesperen, porque nuestro Dios es un Dios amoroso y misericordioso. Igualmente importante, a través de nuestro bautismo, el don del Espíritu Santo mora dentro de nosotros. A través del Espiritu Santo, Dios es personal para cada uno de nosotros y tiene el poder de transformarnos en las personas que quere-mos ser. El don del Espíritu Santo que Dios nos dio en nuestro bautis-mo es nuestro para invocarlo cuando necesitamos ori-entación. El Espíritu Santo puede ayudarnos a vivir las vidas de las que somos capaces, vidas como cristianos compro-metidos, vidas de compasión y amor por los miembros de nuestras familias, así como por los extraños en la calle. Tal vez es hora de que nos "sumerjamos" de nuevo en nuestra fe.

Many vic ms feel ashamed and guilty. Take steps to become a trusted adult to the children in your life. Tell them you will listen without judgment or punishment, even if they are scared to talk about something.

Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and disci-pleship. All Souls is happy to celebrate the baptism of children in our community. Please consider the following when preparing your child for this sacrament of initiation: • Your child must be six years old or younger • Parents must submit an applica on a month

LLAMADOS A SER SANTOS

Este domingo comienza el Tiempo Ordinario. Las lecturas nos hablan sobre la relación de Dios con Is-rael y la relación de Juan Bau sta con Jesús. La rela-ción entre Dios e Israel es tan estrecha, tan ín ma, que es por mediación de Israel que “la salvación [de Dios] llega hasta los úl mos rincones de la e-rra” (Isaías 49:6). Pero sabemos por Juan Bau sta que para que Israel cumpla la voluntad de Dios, debe reconocer que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. Durante estas semanas también llegamos a conocer a Jesús. Co-menzamos a entender más profundamente nuestra relación con Jesús y lo que la misma significa para nosotros, que somos “su pueblo santo” (1 Corin os 1:2).

The Santo Niño de Cebú (Spanish: Holy Child of Cebu) is a Roman Catholic title of Jesus Christ associated with a religious vested statue of the infant Child Jesus venerat-ed by many Filipino Catholics who believe it to be mirac-ulous. It is the oldest religious Christian image in the Phil-ippines, and was originally given in 1521 as a baptismal gift by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan via An-tonio Pigafetta, who physically handed it to Lady Hu-mamay, the principal wife of Rajah Humabon, along with a statue of the Our Lady of Guidance and a Cross. The image merited a Papal recognition on 28 April 1965 when Pope Paul VI issued a papal bull for the Canonical Coro-nation and Pontifical High Mass via the papal legate to the Philippines, Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani who concelebrated it’s 400th centennial anniversary. The im-age measures approximately twelve inches tall, and is believed to be originally made in Flanders, Belgium. The statue is clothed in valuable textiles, and bears an impe-rial regalia that includes a gold biretta crown, globus cruciger, and various sceptres mostly donated from dev-otees in the Philippines and abroad. The Santo Niño im-age is replicated in many homes and business establish-ments, with different titles reinterpreted in various areas of the country. The Holy Child’s feast is liturgically cele-brated every third Sunday of January, during which dev-otees carry a portable Santo Niño image onto the street fiesta dancing celebrations. The image is one of the most beloved and recognizable cultural icons in the Philip-pines, found in both religious and secular areas. It is per-manently encased within bulletproof glass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.
