Scripture Reflection—26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad.'" Today's Gospel reading is Jesus' parable about a "rich man," whose name we do not know, and a "poor man," named Lazarus. The story shows both men after death, the rich man in torment, and Lazarus enjoying the comfort that he was deprived of during his earthly life. It's important to understand that this teaching does not imply that having wealth leads to eternal punishment. Rather, we look at how the rich man USED his wealth and see there the cause of the problem. As Jesus says, this man "dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day." Clearly, he had abundant wealth and focused it all upon serving himself. To further the accusation against him, all the while "lying at his door was a poor man—who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table." But the rich man paid Lazarus no heed, and THIS is why he now suffers. Because he would not deign to "suffer" at all during his life by sharing his linen clothing or feeding his poor neighbor covered with sores. This selfishness became the rich man's SELF-condemnation. He put himself in torment because he blatantly disobeyed God's law to love his neighbor. This challenging parable urges us to examine our own behavior and ask how WE use our wealth--whatever size our bank account may be. Are we willing to assist our neighbors in need? Or do we walk by the poor, excusing our own comfort? Let us heed Christ's warning today that such earthly comforts are, in the long run, short-lived. LPI, Inc.

Make All Souls your parish home, today!

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of

a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. These may be found in the narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org. Why not sign up today?

Dear Parishioners, On occasion, you may see a family or a person asking for financial assistance outside of Church after Mass. Our hearts, filled with Christian charity want to help in some way—most especially if there are children involved. However, we ask that you please do not give money, but rather refer these people to our Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Our Vincentian volunteers are ever-ready to come to the aid of those in our community who seek assistance: 407.330.4400

In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Tuesday, October 4th, All Souls Church and Catholic School will have a very special Blessing of the Pets on Tuesday, October 4th, at 2:30 pm at Park on Park (the park on Park Ave., directly across the street from All Souls Catholic School). Dogs, cats, guinea

pigs, birds, fowl, lions, tigers and bears (oh my!) will all receive a very special blessing. Please have animals on a leash, or in a crate to maintain a fittingly Franciscan air of peace. Additionally, please bring the necessary materials to ‘curb your pet.’ May you always take care of your pets as you would take care of yourself—for they, too are great gifts from God.
