Lent is almost upon us.
March 6th is Ash Wednesday and from then on there is the forty days of Lent
where many Chris2ans engage in a period of penitence marked by fas2ng and
abs2nence.
In some churches there are rules regarding how they approach this. Many
catholics will fast by restric2ng themselves to just one regular meal a day and
two smaller ones. They will abstain from ea2ng meat (ea2ng fish instead) on
Fridays and Holy Days.
But these dietary restric2ons, whilst probably very good for the figure, don’t
necessarily reach deep enough into us.
The other day I discovered these simple exercises that I thought might make a
real difference. I am going to try them and see if I can get into be:er spiritual
shape ~ even if my weight doesn‘t change.
Fast from hur2ng words and say kind words.
Fast from sadness and be filled with gra2tude.
Fast from anger and be filled with pa2ence.
Fast from pessimism be filled with love.
Fast from worries and have trust in God.
Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressure and be prayerful.
Fast from bi:erness and fill your hearts with joy.
Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.
Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
Fast from words and be silent as you listen.
You could try too. Blessings Chris

All Saints’ Warden’s Report It would appear that the winter storms and gales have ceased and [though it
might have been picturesque to have had snow] our lovely churchyard is show-
ing the signs of spring and the promise of a glorious summer.
Crocuses [or is that croci?] and narcissi are proudly appearing in the church-
yard – we hope that their keenness will not be dampened by cruel frosts. The
“God’s Acre” area along the south wall of All Saints’ will, once again, be kept
unmown to preserve display the three rare plants that grow there – you can
read their La2n names on the specially-made no2ce boards . Snowdrops are
also flourishing in fields around the church.
The herons are already back, se:ling into their nests on the holm oak on the
corner of Dennes Lane – by the 2me you read this their eggs will have been
laid.
There have been concerns expressed about the [frankly] unsightly glazing ar-
rangements in the huge West Window. The plan was to remove the glass panels
step-by-step, replace the lead and glass, and repair and refurbish the en2re
window. Sadly, during these opera2ons major problems were discovered in
large parts of the early mediaeval stone tracery, so work had to be halted to al-
low technical surveys and an ac2on plan for safe and acceptable reconstruc-
2on. This of course was not an op2on during the winter-2me. It is hoped that
[monies permi@ng] the immense task will recommence soon. [Our thanks to
the church architect and to the glazier and his team].
We are half-way through the total revision of the Church Electoral Roll. This is
NOT the same as the Electoral Roll used for vo2ng rights in local and general
elec2ons, but it does allow and encourage parishioners to take an ac2ve rôle in
the life of the church. For details please see the table inside the west door, or
ask a church member.
There is a plan to create an area of the churchyard for the laying of loved one’s
ashes.

St Peter’s Warden’s Report
As we write this the sun is shining and there’s a definite feel of Spring in
the air.
Did you make the ‘Brunch’? a very successful event raising £361 for the
New Hall Project – thank you to Jean, John & Margaret who manned the
kitchen and to all who came and par2cipated.
February 16th was the first market of this year – the next one will be on
the 16th March – these markets are a vital sources of income for our
church and we are very grateful to those who work so hard pu@ng them
together.
Lent is approaching and during this 2me we will be arranging two HUN-
GER Lunches – the first being on the 12th March (see separate ad) - this
year we will be suppor2ng The Apollos Trust a local charity who provide
Chris2an Schools Workers in Romney Marsh (The Marsh Academy) &
Tenterden (Homewood School) - the second lunch will be on the 16th
April when we hope to have Richard Dowling a Schools Chris2an Worker
with us. Please come and support us as we support them.
On the 17th March the Trust will be holding its AGM 6 pm at St Au-
gus2ne’s Brookland where you are invited to “come and join us for wor-
ship, prayer and thanksgiving, as well as hearing a presenta2on of ac2vi-
2es and accounts for 2018” ( see separate poster).
We hope and pray that this year may see the start of our new hall being
built - please con2nue to support this work through our loose change jar
and by suppor2ng fundraising efforts – we are hoping to have a concert
from the Seaside Singers on the 4th May – please make a note of this date
in your diaries
During March we will be praying for all living in Williamson Road and for
the work of Mission Avia2on Fellowship in Angola, Liberia, Indonesia, for
Educa2on & Training and for all who Supporter & Volunteers

Nancy Sarah Mcghie. 30th September 1924 - 30th January 2019.
Our mother lived all her 94 years in Lydd and always looked forward to each
new issue of the magazine, it helped her keep in touch with what was going
on in Lydd in her later years when she was not so able to get out and
about. She was always par2culaly interested in the goings on at Dungeness
Life Boat sta2on, as when she was a young girl she used to help launch the
Life Boat by moving the wooden sleepers.

Mrs. Mcghie also supported the All Saints' Christmas appeal for shoe box-

Beware of Telephone Scams
Telephone scams ~
are fraudulent schemes intended to trick you out of money.
One type of scam call involves someone pretending to be from a well-known
company – like BT – to try and con you out of money. They’ll try various tricks
to try and get personal informa2on from you and may become threatening,
but don’t worry, you are in charge of your phone.
BT never call out of the blue and:
Tell you that your service has been hacked
Try to remotely take control of your device
Tell you we’ve found a problem with your computer
Ask you for an urgent payment and threaten to disconnect your service
Ask for payment details to ac2vate Caller Display, Call Protect or any of our
free services.
What do I do if I get scam call?
Stay calm and don’t give out any informa%on.
If you don’t give out your personal or payment details, they can’t access
your bank or BT account.
So if you’re not sure, just put down the phone.
Remember you're in control.
Report the scam at www.bt.com/scams

Polite message to Dog Walkers
All Saints’ welcomes visitors of all kinds and people passing through. What is
not so welcome is the increase in owners who fail to clear up dog excreta,
which fouls the churchyard and graves of past Lydd inhabitants.
Please remember to bring bags and use the designated waste

FROM LYDD METHODIST CHURCH
Dear Friends,
I’ve been handing out marbles recently – not so that I can do a bad joke
about ‘having lost mine’ but because I think they are a good, physical re-
minder of an essen2al truth about God and God’s way of seeing us.
When I was young we used to play with marbles quite a lot; the minute de-
tail of this, at 2mes, quite complex game and the bargaining that went on,
now escapes me but I do retain the fact that some marbles were seen to
be worth more than others because we saw great beauty and power in
them. The 2ny piece of glass, coloured or clear, was imbued with a sense
of value because it was precious in our eyes.
So, I’ve been using this idea, and actual marbles, as a way of reminding
people that this is just how God sees us – the only difference being that
with God there are no favourites and we are all of equal value, regardless
of colour, age, life experience, intelligence, posi2on or even how we see
ourselves. God sees us as people of great beauty and worth, values us as
precious and something (or someone) to cherish and keep safe.
Isaiah passed on these words of God to the people of his day, “Do not be
afraid – I will save you. I have called you by name – you are mine...I will
give up whole na2ons to save your life, because you are precious to me
and because I love you” (Isaiah 43:1b &4 Good News Bible)
And that declara2on was followed through in the life, ministry, death and
resurrec2on of Jesus – God in our life, sharing it all and then giving it all up
to save us, because God says – YOU ARE PRECIOUS TO ME AND I LOVE
YOU.
The marble, kept in a pocket, or a handbag, or in view on a window sill, is a
way of reminding ourselves that we ma:er to God and even if we have low
2mes, periods of doubt and insecurity, when lack of self worth may threat-
en to overwhelm us, perhaps especially then, that we can hold onto that
truth, hold onto God and God’s love for us, and in that way, know that God
will see us through.
Maybe, you could ‘find your marble(s)’ or something similar as a daily re-
minder of just how much YOU ma:er to God!

agenda item at the mee2ng of Lydd Town Council held on Monday 4th February
to discuss the ma:er and to consider a replacement.
The defibrillator had been cleaned, checked and serviced on 12th January 2019
and was in good working order. This was carried out by Mr Ken Hopkins whose
company maintain the two defibrillators owned by Lydd Town Council.
It was unanimously agreed to replace the defibrillator which will be housed in a
locked cabinet - this is now on order and will be installed as soon as possible.

News from Dungeness RNLI Lifeboat Sta%on
Our training con2nues with our volunteers even
though the winter months have been quiet for calls and some of the exercises
afloat have been in very cold condi2ons!! Yet these amazing people have even
volunteered that bit extra to wash cars at the end of January CAR WASH held
at the boathouse and with your support we made a further £1,298.10p to help
the RNLI so thank you to everyone of you that came along and supported us!!
Last December our Shannon class lifeboat 13-02 ‘The Morrell’ had to go back
to the RNLI’s All Weather Centre in Poole to have some modifica2ons updated
and she returned home to Dungeness on 29 January. It you get a chance to go
to the RNLI’s headquarters in Poole then please go! It has an amazing training
school, plus houses the boatbuilding and sea survival centres together with a
hotel so you can book tours to see all the facili2es, and even stay there too!!
The night before the Car Wash the Pilot Inn held their annual Sloe Gin night
raising the huge amount of £604 for the RNLI. Then the Dungeness Angling As-
socia2on held their superb annual World Dab Compe22on 2019 at the begin-
ning of February with 154 anglers registering to fish and descending on Dunge-
ness for the day with the magnificent amount of £4,000 being raised for the
RNLI so a very big THANK YOU again to everyone for helping the RNLI to con-
2nue saving lives at sea.
Remember, you can book a group visit to our lifeboat sta2on to see our superb
Shannon class lifeboat by emailing Vicky: - [email protected] and
if you look at the homepage of our website www.dungenesslifeboat.org.uk you
will see when our next exercise are scheduled, subject to opera2onal require-
ments.

Reserve News Updates
A lot of our reserve work has been focussed on clearing willow and sea
buckthorn from the ARC pits this month. It is a tough but important job to
keep these two quite invasive species of plant in line. The pits we are clear-
ing these from are extremely important breeding sites for the protected
great crested newt. They need submerged and emergent vegeta2on to lay
their eggs on in the spring. Removing willow allows more light into the
ponds and therefore more submerged vegeta2on to grow. Our reserve vol-
unteers and staff have also been clearing reed and willow away to open up
be:er viewing areas for visitors along the ARC and willow trails.
A7er a short cold snap in late January, we have now seen some more
winter birds arrive to the reserve. We have finally been graced with the
presence of a male smew as well as whooper swans, goosander and larger
numbers of wigeon and teal.
We are star2ng to remove some old signs, interpreta2on and bird ID pan-
els from our hides. These are faded and outdated and we hope to be giving
the hides a good spruce up, a lick of paint and some new informa2on boards
ready for the spring. Please bear with us whilst we undertake this work.
Volunteering opportunity!
Want to try something different? Then volunteer for RSPB Dungeness!
We need people who are willing to help our reserve team of staff and volun-
teers with important conserva2on tasks around the reserve. Get up close to
nature and see a different side of our spectacular reserve by undertaking a
variety of habitat management and site maintenance tasks. Opportuni2es
available every Tuesday, 9am-4pm. Please contact the reserve on 01797
320588 and ask for Craig or [email protected]
If you don’t fancy all that manual work, the visitor centre is also looking for
friendly and cha:y volunteers to help manage our counter and recep2on ar-
ea. Volunteer for a full day or half a day based on a rota that is flexible
around you. If you love talking to people, par2cularly about wildlife and are
happy to serve people in our shop then please call the reserve on 01797
320588 and ask for Mary or email [email protected]
