In Japan: November & December November 23 is Labour Thanksgiving Day (kinro kansha no hi) This is national holiday for honoring labour. ~ December 23 is the celebration of the Emperor's Birthday (tenno no tanjobi). The birthday of the current emperor, His Imperial Majesty Akihito, is always a national holiday. If the emperor changes, the national holiday changes to the birthday date of the new emperor. ~ December 24-25 is Christmas. Christmas is not a national holiday, but it is celebrated by an increasing number of Japanese who are taking up traditions such as decorating their home, giving presents to friends and celebrating the event with a special meal. December 31 ~ New Year's Eve (omisoka) December 31 is not a national holiday.

Camellias at Cape Ashizuri [Kochi] Cape Ashizuri, situated at the southernmost part of Shikoku, is a representative scenic spot of Kochi. The quay was created by the granite ground being repeatedly raised and sunk over many years. Its two observation platforms provide a 270° panoramic view, from which you can see the curve of the earth and the continuous waves of the Kuroshio Current. In this area, sturdy camellia trees have been used for wind-protection. When winter comes, 60,000 camellias make romantic arcades of red flowers along the beautiful promenade connecting several sightseeing spots of the cape from "Tengu-no-hana" to the lighthouse.

Upcoming Ikebana Events

Ikebana History as seen by Mary Lib Saleh On Friday, November 14, we will hold our Fort Worth Chapter meeting at the Texas Garden Club Headquarters building. Mary Lib Saleh, longtime Ikebana International member, with special insight into the history of this organization, will present our program. Mary Lib has been a dual member of the Fort Worth and Dallas Chapters for many years; and is a Master Teacher of the Ohara School. She will entertain us with her stories of how Ikebana runs in her family, how she was taught Ohara, and how she prepares for a demonstration and workshop. She will share some photos, video and memorabilia. The November monthly raffle will include a complete arrangement with container. If you need Ways and Means, please contact Sharman Palmer with your requested items. We do have a few containers, hasami and kenzans available.

Refreshments for the October meeting will be provided by Joan Stanley and Judy Methvin.

She has been in the US since 2007, and is currently working on her PhD degree at the University of New Mexico. Ikebana Sangetsu was established in Japan on June 15, 1972, based on the flower arrangements and philosophy of Meishu-sama. (see side bar.)
