Ikebana International
Chapter 13 celebrated the changing
of the seasons with Kiku Matsuri
2014. Dramatic outdoor sculptures,
an incredible indoor exhibition,
creative workshops and a
spectacular demonstration by Kimi
“Kika” Shibata, Riji, Sogetsu, were
filled with chrysanthemums. Mrs.
Shibata’s creative spirit was evident
as she created large arrangements in
challenging containers like the two
tall containers with very small necks
and in her hand-woven airy baskets.
She combined natural and manmade
material, manipulated leaves to
create movement and rhythm in
thirteen arrangements culminating in
an outstanding arrangement which
filled the stage. Many of her designs
and other pictures from Kiku Matsuri
are posted in the photo galleries on
our website ikebanadallas.org. I
appreciate the time, effort and
commitment Patricia O’Reilly, the
teachers, their students, all the
committees and the 25 Ikebana
Artists, who made arrangements,
devoted to create an exceptional
Kiku Matsuri.
Unique handmade containers by
Daryl McManus were used by Jerry
to create beautiful Ikebana
arrangements in September. As
Jerry designed, Daryl shared some
of his techniques that he used when
he created and finished his
containers. Members used a

introduced to Sangetsu School of
Ikebana by Rebeca Gibrail, a
Sangetsu instructor from New Mexico.
Her demonstration will be followed by

emphasizes nature and simplicity.
Makichi Okada, the founder, said “The
great beauty of art is its essence,
which refreshes, renews the spirit. It is
indeed a priceless thing in this material
world.” He recommended that flower
arrangements be put in every home,
office and building and encouraged
people to grow flowers. Additional
information is provided on the
following pages.
Come early on November 20 and bring
your Ikebana items for the Ginza this
month. Items will be set up on a
separate table. You can sell your own
items and donate 20% of your sales to

In Japan: November & December November 23 is Labour Thanksgiving Day (kinro kansha no hi) This is national holiday for honoring labour. ~ December 23 is the celebration of the Emperor's Birthday (tenno no tanjobi). The birthday of the current emperor, His Imperial Majesty Akihito, is always a national holiday. If the emperor changes, the national holiday changes to the birthday date of the new emperor. ~ December 24-25 is Christmas. Christmas is not a national holiday, but it is celebrated by an increasing number of Japanese who are taking up traditions such as decorating their home, giving presents to friends and celebrating the event with a special meal. December 31 ~ New Year's Eve (omisoka) December 31 is not a national holiday.
Camellias at Cape Ashizuri [Kochi] Cape Ashizuri, situated at the southernmost part of Shikoku, is a representative scenic spot of Kochi. The quay was created by the granite ground being repeatedly raised and sunk over many years. Its two observation platforms provide a 270° panoramic view, from which you can see the curve of the earth and the continuous waves of the Kuroshio Current. In this area, sturdy camellia trees have been used for wind-protection. When winter comes, 60,000 camellias make romantic arcades of red flowers along the beautiful promenade connecting several sightseeing spots of the cape from "Tengu-no-hana" to the lighthouse.

Upcoming Ikebana Events
Ikebana History as seen by Mary Lib Saleh On Friday, November 14, we will hold our Fort Worth Chapter meeting at the Texas Garden Club Headquarters building. Mary Lib Saleh, longtime Ikebana International member, with special insight into the history of this organization, will present our program. Mary Lib has been a dual member of the Fort Worth and Dallas Chapters for many years; and is a Master Teacher of the Ohara School. She will entertain us with her stories of how Ikebana runs in her family, how she was taught Ohara, and how she prepares for a demonstration and workshop. She will share some photos, video and memorabilia. The November monthly raffle will include a complete arrangement with container. If you need Ways and Means, please contact Sharman Palmer with your requested items. We do have a few containers, hasami and kenzans available.
Refreshments for the October meeting will be provided by Joan Stanley and Judy Methvin.

She has been in the US since 2007, and is currently working on her PhD degree at the University of New Mexico. Ikebana Sangetsu was established in Japan on June 15, 1972, based on the flower arrangements and philosophy of Meishu-sama. (see side bar.)
