The mission of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is to preserve and promote contemporary art

practices of Singapore and the Southeast Asian region. Opened in January 1996 as a museum

under the National Heritage Board of Singapore, SAM has amassed one of the world’s largest public

collections of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks, with a growing component

in international contemporary art. Since 2009, SAM has focused its programming and collections

development initiatives around contemporary Southeast Asian art and art practices. Through strategic

alliances with arts and cultural institutions and community organisations, SAM facilitates visual arts

education, exchange, research and development within the region and internationally. SAM is also the

organiser of the Singapore Biennale 2011.

Director’s MessageThe last quarter ended on a high note with the

opening of the much anticipated Negotiating

Home, History and Nation: two decades of

contemporary art in Southeast Asia, 1991-2011.

The exhibition is a parallel event of Singapore

Biennale 2011: Open House. We also launched

an extensive screening of 17 films by veteran and

emerging artists and filmmakers of the region

with the inaugural Southeast Asian Film Festival.

Portraying urgent and contemporary issues,

these events complement and complete one

another as they give audiences an opportunity

to appreciate the region’s diverse realities. They

put the spotlight on the distinctive contemporary

art practice in Singapore and Southeast Asia,

and perhaps more importantly, more acutely

defined common identities and what it means to

be Southeast Asian for many of us.

In the next quarter, we continue to define contemporary Southeast Asia through its contemporary art

practice with another blockbuster show, Video, an Art, a History 1965 – 2010. A Selection from the

Centre Pompidou and Singapore Art Museum Collections. We are pleased to present this well-received

new media travelling exhibition from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, which explores the significance

of video as an art form through the extensive collection of works created since the advent of video

technology. Not just a touring show, SAM has worked with the Centre Pompidou to insert key pieces

of contemporary Southeast Asia videos from the SAM collections into the international narrative of

video art.

For the young and the young-at-heart, another reason to hop on down to SAM is the return of our well-

loved Art Garden: Children’s Season at SAM. Don’t miss this chance to interact with and be inspired

by imaginative artworks such as the Dancing Solar Flowers installation that is all about environmentally-

friendly technology, and Knee Deep, which invites you to jump in and explore unexpected worlds of

different proportions with your feet. And if you are wondering, yes, Walter, everyone’s favourite colossal

inflatable rabbit will be back!

There is much to discover – if you have yet to visit, our House is always Open so come on in!

LIVE Singapore!

8 April to 1 May 2011SAM

LIVE Singapore! is a project within the Future Urban Mobility research initiative funded by the

Singapore National Research Foundation, developed by MIT’s SENSEable City Lab and co-organised

with SAM. It closes the feedback loop between people moving in the city and digital real-time data

collected in the multiple networks. It gives the data back to the people, who generate it themselves

through their actions, developing an open platform for the collection, fusion and distribution of real-

time data from a range of different sources.

by more than 3,000 students from over 40

Self-Portrait, Our Landscape or SPOL is

a year-long project where participating

students drew their self-portraits without

re-creating their faces. They instead re-

create their identities expressed in relation

to the people, environment and things that

are important to them into a series of drawings. These drawings are then animated.

urbanisation, and religious and gender discourses.

Artists featured include Agus Suwage (Indonesia), Vasan Sitthiket (Thailand), Suzann Victor

(Singapore), Wong Hoy Cheong (Malaysia), Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan (Philippines), and Tran Luong

Learning Gallery

Ongoing till November 2011SAM

The Learning Gallery is dedicated to presenting artworks from SAM’s collection to the young visitor.

Besides nurturing an appreciation for art, the works are specially selected to encourage lively

discussions and develop creative and analytical thinking.

The current show, Everyday Objects, invites you to take a second look at familiar things through the

eyes of artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia, where ordinary items we sometimes take for granted

are portrayed in a different light, making us reflect on their function and relation to other objects.

Education programmes inspired by the artworks have also been specially developed for schools to

offer students a multi-disciplinary and holistic contemporary art experience at the Learning Gallery.

These programmes range from learning specific art techniques to speech-and-drama puppet shows

that encourage originality and develop language skills and self-confidence.

Showcasing selected paintings from the donation, Seeing the Kites Again is an exhibition inspired

by Wu’s metaphor of the kite. Since the 1960s, Wu Guanzhong has produced a great number

works based on his personal recollections. These works are centred on his home in South China,

his childhood, as well as the villages and towns he has visited. His interest in life and his attention

to ordinary scenes infuse his art with an aesthetic quality that demonstrates a return to simplicity.

Earth and Water:Mapping Art in Southeast Asia

Runs through 15 May 2011

The diverse region of Southeast Asia is home to about 500 million people. The history and society

of Southeast Asia have been shaped by a confluence of geographical, historical and cultural forces.

With exhibits drawn from the National Heritage Board’s permanent collection, the theme Earth and

Water conjoins two of life’s basic elements within Southeast Asia. These works by the region’s best-

known artists further offer multiple manifestations of life, society and traditions of Southeast Asia.

The above shows are special research exhibitions organised by the National Art Gallery, Singapore,

“If you were to play a part in a film, would you be yourself or a fictional character? Call Gillian.” British

artist Gillian Wearing placed this advertisement in various newspapers and job centers in London

and Newcastle and selected seven people from hundreds of respondents. They were guided through

intense Method Acting workshops, drawing upon their personal lives and memories. This led up to

a final vivid and authentic performance for each of participants.

Born in Birmingham in 1963, Gillian Wearing now lives and works in London. One of the most

prominent artists of her generation, she won the Turner Prize in 1997. Working primarily in the

medium of photography and video, she has had solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery and

Whitechapel Gallery, London, ICA Philadelphia, and the Musee Rodin, Paris. Her work is also held in

the collections of the Tate and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Films by Isaac Julien

SAM is proud to present a special series of films by British film and installation artist Isaac Julien.

Born in 1960, Julien was trained in painting and fine art at St Martin’s School of Art, and came to

prominence in the film world with his 1989 drama-documentary Looking for Langston. He was

nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001, and his films have received numerous awards, including

prizes at Cannes (Young Soul Rebels, 1991), Kunst filmBiennale (Baltimore, 2003), and others. He

has had solo exhibitions at the Pompidou Centre in Paris, MoCA Miami and is represented in the Tate

Modern, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim and Hirshhorn Collections.

In June, a rare triple bill of Isaac Julien’s works—including experimental documentaries, video art,

and new works—will be screened at the Moving Image Gallery.

Isaac Julien will be present in Singapore to introduce his films.

The Blind

by Robert Zhao

Having won the United Overseas Bank

Painting of the Year Award for The Blind, as

well as the inaugural Emerging Artist Award

of the Singapore International Photography

Festival in 2008, Robert Zhao’s fascination with

animals led him to create an “Institute of Critical

Zoologists” and timely images of humanity’s

seemingly unconscious intrusion into nature.

The Blind is based on recent developments

of composite materials that can curve light,

potentially inventing “invisibility cloaks”. The

human subjects drape themselves with this

futuristic invention, apparently for field research,

to infiltrate the natural habitats of the animals.

The artist also questions “truth” and “objectivity”

through the stories he presents to the viewer,

via the manipulated imagery of photography.

Paradise Danger Dancer

by Jeremy Hiah

Jeremy Hiah, an active performance artist with

The Artist Village, the influential art collective

that defined contemporary art in Singapore,

engages fellow performance artists such as

Tang Da Wu, Kai Lam and Lee Wen to strike

a pose as terrorists or freedom fighters, in

a stance strikingly reminiscent of the 1909

painting La Danse (The Dance) by Henri

Matisse. This group of performance artists

would each be given a digital copy of the work,

replicating the process by which the recording

of a terrorist’s final words is provided to his or

her family.

Paradise Danger Dancer plays on the

contradiction between ‘paradise’ and ‘terror’,

as these opposing concepts are conjoined

by organised groups or “brotherhoods”

misappropriating the ideology of pursuing

a harmonious afterlife, through destructive

acts in the present. The work is significant

for its refreshing examination of longstanding

concepts and ideas through the contemporary

medium of performance art. As performance

art and photography, Paradise Danger Dancer

also embodies the interdisciplinary, boundary-

crossing nature of contemporary art.

He’s Satisfied from Monday to Friday

and on Sundays He Loves to Cry

by Chun Kaifeng

Chun Kaifeng is a multimedia installation artist

who won the Singapore Art Exhibition Prize in

2009. He’s Satisfied from Monday to Friday and

on Sundays He Loves to Cry is a diorama—a

nineteenth-century theatrical device—or in its

twentieth-century usage, a full-scale model

enclosed in glass showcases in history museums.

Originally meant as tools of entertainment and

education, Chun subverts the original purpose

of a diorama to one that is almost discomforting

to the viewer. The installation conveys an

anxiety that most who live in urban societies

can relate to, comprising everyday objects

associated with the sterility of corporate offices

and interjected surreptitiously with dangerous

items, hinting at uncontrollable violence when

pushed to the edge, be it at work or in one’s

personal life. The missing human presence

in the work heightens the dramatic effect of

a secret wish to transgress the bounds of a

seemingly controlled environment. But perhaps

the protagonist, lacking the will to perpetrate

the crime, chooses instead to cry on Sunday in

order to be “satisfied” with life again on Monday.

Fire of the Year

by Vandy Rattana

Vandy Rattana, an artist working in the

photojournalistic medium, has emerged as

one of the most prolific Cambodian artists,

documenting unseen truths about rapid

modernisation in a fast-developing Southeast

Asian economy. Self-taught, Vandy began to

record the daily activities of his family in 2005,

which became the subject of his first acclaimed

exhibition in Phnom Penh.

In Fire of the Year, the artist captures a story

of hopelessness that is common in Cambodia

today, which instantly strikes a chord with

Singaporean viewers who know the story of the

Bukit Ho Swee Fire in 1961. The Bukit Ho Swee

Fire has been recorded by Singaporean artists

of that time using the woodcut medium. Fast-

forward 50 years on, this traumatic experience

continues on somewhere else in Southeast

Asia that is experiencing rapid modernisation.

Vandy’s still images capture moments of chaos,

desperation and, perhaps, resigned fate of the

people, ominously heightened by the billowing

black smoke engulfing the skyline of a bleak

landscape.

The Last Judgement in Cyberspace

by Miao Xiaochun

Beijing-based multidisciplinary artist Miao Xiaochun expands the boundaries of photography by

incorporating elements of new media. Representative of recent new media art of China, Miao’s

works play with digital manipulation, the traditional Chinese scroll format, and the alter ego.

The Last Judgement in Cyberspace is part of a series of work, which appropriates and develops

Western canonical paintings into computer-generated scenarios that provide different perspectives of

the original work. The different perspectives combined give viewers a larger-than-life experience of the

original painting.

Miao appropriates Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes, creating a virtual model of Apocalypse,

replacing each of the 400 figures in the iconic work with the image of himself, representing the 'every

man'. While placing these figures in the corresponding pose and position as in the original fresco,

Miao captures this same scene from different vantage points, showing The Second Coming from

within and outside the scene. The view from the top pictures the viewer as saint or seraph, while

from below, the damned.

Untitled

By Kow Leong Kiang

Untitled depicts a nondescript Malay village in the state of Kelantan just before the Malaysian general

elections of 2004. The village appears sleepy and we see campaign posters and buntings of United

Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS)—opposing political parties

and traditional arch enemies. These parties have battled to win the hearts and minds of the Malay

heartlands since the country’s independence in 1957. This battle dialogue is replicated through the

two boys in the foreground, each looking away from the other, protagonists representing UMNO

and PAS. A third party, a girl, representing newcomer Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) led by de-facto

opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, stands as if lost between the boys. Meanwhile, a village cat,

symbolising the citizens, sits among the three children, nonchalant, engrossed in itself.

SAM Abroad

Since taking on a new direction as a champion of contemporary art and emerging artists from

Southeast Asia and Singapore, and as part of international cultural diplomacy efforts, SAM

implements strategic partnerships with respected international museums and visual art institutions to

showcase important works from the national collection by artists from the region at an international

level. Besides loaning out artworks to overseas museums, SAM has an ambitious programme to

showcase original exhibitions created by its team of curators.

Ming Wong: Life of Imitation at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, USAMing Wong: Life of Imitation opened with aplomb at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, USA, on 21

January 2011, and to date more than 6000 vistors have seen the exhibition. The opening at the Frye

Art Museum signals the beginning of SAM’s international travelling series of exhibitions. Co-organised

and funded by SAM and the Frye Foundation, the exhibition also enjoys media sponsorship by

KUOW and seasonal support by ArtsFund.

Originally shown at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Singapore artist Ming Wong garnered special mention

from the international jury. Along with Wong, the curatorial team of Life of Imitation included

independent curator, Tang Fu Kuen, and director of the Frye Art Museum, Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker,

who is also the co-ordinating curator in Seattle. SAM and Frye worked closely to ensure a resounding

success in the inauguration of Wong’s first solo exhibition in the United States.

Life of Imitation is presented at two additional venues in 2011: CAST gallery in Tasmania, Australia,

in association with the Ten Days on the Island biennial festival, which opened in March 2011, and the

Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan, which will open in June 2011.

Art Around SAMIn The Shade of Light by Angela Chong

In the Shade of Light by Singaporean artist Angela Chong—a pair of sunglasses reproduced larger

than life—glowed and emitted light at night. Passers-by through the lawn at SAM were engaged by

the ironic yet fun take on the nature of sunglasses.

Iconic, unassuming and friendly, the sculpture provided many opportunities for public interaction

and photo-taking with a contemporary artwork. In the Shade of Light also responded to the human

habit of projecting personal visions of the future through resolutions habitually made in the New

Year and major celebrations, in this case, Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

indulged in some shopping at the flea market

or caught three very creative local short films,

Clouds that elevated the festive mood.
