Dear Madison Families,

It’s hard to believe the end of another wonderful Madison school year is upon us. For many families this marks the end of their time at Madison School. As we fondly remember our time at Madison, we also prepare for bright new beginnings and exciting changes. For those moving on to Baldwin, I strongly encourage you to get involved with Baldwin’s robust and busy PTA. It’s the best way to stay informed and supportive of your student’s educational experiences.

My time at Madison has been like no other. I’ve made beautiful lifelong friends and worked alongside some of the best faculty, staff, and parents I’ve ever known. I want to thank all the room parents, committee chairs, and volunteers that made this year possible. I would especially like to recognize and share my endless gratitude for our Executive Committee: Jessica Dedert, Chasidy Rees, Dawn Stupavsky, and Julie Ginos. The time and energy they have given could never be measured. Jessica (President), Chasidy (Vice President), Cheryl Predmore (Treasurer), and Janet Venvertloh (Secretary) are stepping up next year. Madison School’s PTA could not be in better hands and another fantastic Madison School year will be sure to follow!

Thank you and congratulations to all who participated in the Spring Discount Card Fundraiser…you guys are AWESOME! I’m so pleased to inform you that all of your hard work and participation in our Madison School fundraisers over the course of this year has yielded such incredible results! With the money YOU helped raise, Madison PTA is able to give $9000 for three new Polyvision Boards for our wonderful school! This will complete the boards for 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. Kudos to you for doing AMAZING things at Madison School!

Our spring “Buy One Get One Free” Scholastic Book Fair was also a great success. Thank you to Ellen King, our committee chair, and all the volunteers who worked the book fair. A very special thank you should be given to our Special Person’s Day committee chair, Rachel Hansen, and volunteers for coordinating the refreshments for students’ and their special people.

May kicks off with Staff Appreciation Week; always beautifully planned by Erin Knapheide. We also gear up for 3rd Grade Trip to Hannibal; thank you Jessica Dedert for organizing this fun day. We round out May’s 3rd grade activities with 3rd Grade Recognition, and thank Chasidy Rees for her help in coordinating this special night.

We are always excited for our incredible end-of-the-year celebration! Please offer a huge thank you to Chasidy Rees and Dawn Stupavsky for undertaking the planning of our fun-filled day.

Our LAST meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, May 6th at 9:00 a.m. in the Computer Lab. We’ll wrap up planning of our end of the year activities and enjoy breakfast treats courtesy of the PTA!

Thank you for making my Madison experience such a beautiful one; I hope you enjoy the end of the school year and have a truly marvelous summer!

Raquel Piazza

Madison PTA President

Welcome to May!

Our school year is drawing near an end. We are taking part in the ABC countdown with grade level teams. This is an exciting adventure for our students.

PBIS team: we are working on a final challenge for the 2014-2015 school year. The challenge will be a recess challenge as we continue to stress safety and including everyone. Classrooms upon completion of the chal-lenge can earn a trip to Tangerine Bowl for a game of bowling. We will keep you posted as the details un-fold.

Common Core Math Night. Thanks to all students, staff, and families for attending our math night. We enjoyed snacks, books, math board games as well as computer math. It was an enjoyable evening and a great opportunity to get our families spending time together.

Special Persons’ Day: Thanks to everyone for welcoming our special people to Madison School. It was an awesome time to see students invite and spend time with special people including moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and more. The book fair was a HUGE hit during this time sending terrific proceeds back to our students and staff.

Kindergarten Roundup: We thank all those involved in assisting another day to welcome our incoming kinder-garten families to our school. It is always exciting to see the new families enter our Madison School family.

Mr. Wunderlich is planning the details for our annual Madison Talent Show. We will extend the offer to third grade students first, and if any slots remain we will consider the lower grade levels.

Summer is near. We want to welcome our summer fun. As you plan for camps and activities for your children, remember to work in the school activities to keep your mind sharp. Foster the love for reading through trips to the library and book store(s). Keep your mind sharp through practicing math facts or problem solvers as a family. Plan time with your family playing board games, taking trips to the park, going for a bicycle ride, taking a walk, or reading aloud a favorite book.

Staff appreciation week is May 4-8. Take a moment to have your child write a thank you to their teacher(s) for all the wonderful moments of the year. Thanks to the most outstanding staff we could ask for to work with our children!!

Third grade recognition is set for Tuesday May 26 at 6:00. More details to come.

The official end to the year is Wednesday May 27. This is a 2:35 dismissal. This is Madison School Picnic Day being hosted at school and in Madison Park. Please stay tuned to notes and calls to explain other end of the year activities.

Be a STAR!

Mr. James Sohn

Madison School Principal

Our 3rd grade trip to Hannibal is Wednesday, May 13th. Stay tuned for more details coming home!

It is hard to believe that another school year is almost over!

Nutrition is now being taught in the Kindergarten and Second grade classrooms. Hopefully at meal time your child can tell you about each food, including the food group and what it does for the body.

Dental exams for all Kindergarten and 2nd graders are due by May 15th!! Contact the School Nurse immediately if your child still needs a dental exam!

A few Summer reminders for parents:

Please protect your child with sunscreen to prevent skin cancer and painful sunburns. Sunscreen can be applied as part of the morning routine and reapplied at lunchtime at home during the summer.

Protect your child from insect bites by applying insect repellent containing DEET before playing outside, especially around tall grass & weeds, at sunset and at night.

As children reach the age of 8 and are no longer required to be in a booster car seat, please remind them that The Back is Where It’s At! This means that the back seat is safer for your child than riding in the front seat!

Remember to wear those bike helmets!!

It has been my privilege and pleasure to care for your children for another school year! Enjoy a safe, healthy and active summer!!

Becky Ebbing RN, PEL-CSN

Madison School Nurse

Summer is just around the corner. Take safety precautions as the Midwest heat and sun can take a toll on both students and parents. Proper hydration is crucial to staying healthy. The warmer weather will, of course, make you and your child perspire more. To fight this, more liquids are needed. Water is still the best option to rehydrate as Gatorade and other sports drinks have sugars that your body must process. Sunscreen is also very important to protect your skin. Apply even on cloudy days if you or your child will be outside for any extended period of time. Create healthy habits for your children today so they may be ready for tomorrow. Have a terrific summer!

A BIG thank you to Cole and Jillian Miller! They graciously donated their time and artistic ability in order to create a beautiful mural for our cafeteria! The mural brings color and life to an otherwise plain wall. Students and staff will enjoy this for the remaining years that Madison School exists! Thank you from all of us!

Thank you for your tremendous support of our BOGO Book Fair! Successful Book Fairs help the PTA purchase books for our students and our school. We appreciate your loyalty.

THANK YOU for your generous response to our All for Books Collection! We raised $351.86! With this, we purchased 80 books for students’ home libraries and added 58 books to Madison’s Guided Reading Library—used in all classrooms for reading groups and literacy development.

Congratulations to our March Madness Contest winner Betsy Rush!! She was the lucky person drawn from our last contest to receive a $25 gift card of her choice. Thanks to all who participated in our contest. We are entering our last month of school and this is a great time to stock up for summer on the cards you may need over the summer. We are going to make it interesting and see which class can bring in the most in orders. The winning class will receive an extra recess and a sweet treat to eat at that recess. This is a great time to get those cards to give to our staff for staff appreciation week too. We have lots of different denominations in our cards. They are even offering some lower denomination cards right now. We have some $5 and $10 cards on hand in the office so stop by and see what you may want to get to give to those who teach our children everyday. Also this is a great time to stock up for that back to school shopping you may do this summer for next year, get your cards now and use them over the summer. And don't forget Fathers Day and Graduation is coming up too. There is a card for everyone so please place your order today!! This program is an easy way for us to earn money for our school. Our summer stock up contest will run from May 4th through May 15th.

Thanks for your continued support!
