PRESIDENT’S NOTE . . .

Building Community Together . . . . Fayetteville Manlius Minoa

Please join me as I hope and pray that Old Man Winter is packing up his things and taking a long trip away from Central New York!!! I always get my spring optimism around the first of March thinking (and hoping) the cold and snow are mostly behind us with warm temperatures looming ahead. Regardless of the weather, we at the Chamber hope that your 2014 is off to a strong start. Please refer to the Calen-dar of Events for this month and the future. BIG POST IT NOTE: SPRING AUCTION IS ON APRIL 10th! Mark the date and look for the reminders to make your reserva-tions. We continue to refine your Chamber to stay with current trends and ways of doing business. We are ALWAYS looking for suggestions and ideas of what we can do for YOU. Please feel free to email the Chamber with your comments. Each of us is an ambassador for the Chamber. Be sure to share the message with your fellow business owners and to be sure they are taking full advantage of their member-ship. Remember to patronize your local business-es. Sometimes that can mean paying a little more but that money stays locally and you get that back several times over when others do the same for you. BUY LOCAL-LY!!!

We are always looking for volunteers to help on commit-tees and at events. We may not see you to ask you. We have had many ask "What can I do to help?" We love those people!! Give Teresa a call if you have an interest to being more involved and we will be sure to find a place for you. Thank you to all our current volunteers, including your Board. An advance Thank You to those who want to help and will be contacting us!!!   Mike Skeele Michael J. Skeele, CIC, CPIA Skeele Insurance

NEW WEBSITE OPPORTUNITY FOR CHAMBER MEMBERS

We are offering a new FREE option to our Chamber members! You will be able to add more information to your individual page on the Chamber website at no charge. In addition to the information already on your company’s page such as business name, email, website, address, etc., you may also add up to 7 links to your page including links to your website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or samples of your work or products. Your member page can also have two images (at no charge) up to 500 pixels wide. The size should be 100 kb or less so the member’s page will load quickly (1MB would be too large). Examples of member pages with images and/or links are: M&S Desktop Publishing http://manliuschamber.com/company.php?m=195 Custom WebHelp http://manliuschamber.com/company.php?m=6 In order to add this information to your web page, email the links to the Chamber Office. The Administrator will add them to your page. Please call the Chamber office with any questions.

A feature/benefit offered to our members in the monthly Newsletter is the “Chamber Support Column”

As a member benefit, the Chamber is offering space in the monthly newsletter for you to post job openings with your business and/or space to rent in your office. This is free of charge. UPCOMING MEMBER /COMMUNITY EVENTS

Many  of  us  do  not  have  to worry  about our mode  of transporta on to work, school or the grocery store. We climb  in our  car and off we go.  It's  simple. Yet,  in  the 1800s,  individuals  had  to  give  a  lot more  thought  to travel  ‐  just how would  they get  to their sister's house for Easter dinner. There were a few modes of transpor‐ta on at this  me. The Erie Canal provided a  link with villages and the growing city of Syracuse. Small passen‐ger boats ran back and forth  in 1825. In 1870, the rail‐road  carried passengers  from  Syracuse  to  Faye eville, Manlius and other nearby areas. In 1898, as transporta‐on  evolved  throughout  the  area,  the  electric  trolley

was  extended  from  Syracuse  through  Faye eville  and on  to Manlius.  It was adver sed as  the opportunity  to let passengers "live in the country and work in the city." Much, much  later this  idea of  living  in the country and working  in  the  city evolved  into what we know as  the suburbs. We may  grumble  as we  have  to  dig  our  car out, defrost our windows and drive  slowly  to work on snow‐covered roads, but it has to be a lot warmer than a boat on the Erie Canal.  Laura Pierie Manlius Historical Society Director
