INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS

A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC “Peace to this household” (Lk. 10).

Dear Parishioners and Visitors:

Welcome to our Eucharistic celebration on this first week of July. May you and your loved ones find solace in our church. Monday is also July 4th, celebrating our Independence Day. A number of you will be away on vacation to various places for some R&R and for family reunion and celebration. May you reach your destination safely and find your time away enjoyable. May your return home without any delays in traffic.

Parish Summer Repairs and Upkeep

We are in the process of re-painting the front façade of our church and the walkways around the church. The interior lighting of the church will also be changed to replace a number of the light bulbs have burned out.

I am thankful for your weekly contribution to our building fund during the Sunday offertory. Our offering envelop has this option for you to check the appropriate box according to the intention of your donations.

Not Ready for the Call of Disciples: Fears of the Unknown, Family Crisis & Not Fit

Last Sunday Gospel reading in Luke 9 emphasizes the call to discipleship. Jesus journeyed to Jerusalem with His disciples and a long the way several people approached Jesus and said: “I will follow you…” Jesus gave three different responses.

1. “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Fears of the Unknown:

Many of us are not ready to say “yes” because of the fears of unknown. What will happen to my living situations, my finances, or my destination? The unknown can be frightening and bringing about a lot of insecurities.

2. “Let the dead bury their dead.” Family Crisis, Health or Death of Loved Ones:

Family situations can be obstacles to our readiness of letting go our responsibilities and do what we need for our faith, our career, or our future.

3. “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Fit for the Kingdom of God:

I am not fit to make the commitment because of the demands or the requirements

ahead. Reasons for not being fit can be many depending on each person.

Amoris Laetitia - A Summary of The Joy of Love by Pope Francis

Chapter nine: “The spirituality of marriage and the family” (313-325)

The ninth chapter is devoted to marital and family spirituality, which “is made up of thousands of small but real gestures” (AL 315). The Pope clearly states that “those who have deep spiritual aspirations should not feel that the family detracts from their growth in the life of the Spirit, but rather see it as a path which the Lord is using to lead them to the heights of mystical union” (AL 316).

Everything, “moments of joy, relaxation, celebration, and even sexuality can be experienced as a sharing in the full life of the resurrection” (AL 317). He then speaks of prayer in the light of Easter, of the spirituality of exclusive and free love in the challenge and the yearning to grow old together, reflecting God’s fidelity (cf. AL 319).

And finally the spirituality of care, consolation and incentive: the Pope teaches that “all family life is a ‘shepherding’ in mercy. Each of us, by our love and care, leaves a mark on the life of others” (AL 322). It is a profound “spiritual experience to contemplate our loved ones with the eyes of God and to see Christ in them” (AL 323).

In the final paragraph the Pope affirms: “No family drops down from heaven perfectly formed; families need constantly to grow and mature in the ability to love … All of us are called to keep striving towards something greater than ourselves and our families, and every family must feel this constant impulse.

Let us make this journey as families, let us keep walking together. (…) May we never lose heart because of our limitations, or ever stop seeking that fullness of love and communion which God holds out before us” (AL 325).

The Apostolic Exhortation concludes with a Prayer to the Holy Family.

May the divine mystery of God’s Mercy renew your faith and restore your hope in life. Have a wonderful Independence Day celebration!

PEACE The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today's readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the "LORD's power shall be known to his servants" (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the "peace and mercy" on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Jubilee Year of Mercy 14th Sunday, Ordinary Time Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to "call down fire from heaven" (Luke 9:54-55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10-11), showing us how to be Jesus' "missionaries of mercy" this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today's first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke's image for Eucharist), and Jesus' healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what God's kingdom looks like in action. "Go, preach the Gospel," Pope Francis' saintly namesake of Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, "and when necessary, use words!" --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. PARISH LIFE: MINISTRY, EVENTS & REMINDERS

WITNESSES TO FREEDOM: Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher were Renaissance men. Talented and energetic, they contributed to the humanist scholarship of early modern England. More wrote theological and philosophical treatises, while making a career as a lawyer and government official. Bishop John

Fisher worked as an administrator at Cambridge, confronted the challenge Martin Luther presented to Christian Europe, and most importantly served as Bishop of Rochester. As a bishop, he is notable for his dedication to preaching at a time when bishops tended to focus on politics. These men were brilliant. They both corresponded with Erasmus, who helped Bishop Fisher learn Greek and Hebrew, and who also famously referred to More as a man omnium horarium, a man of all seasons.

Above all their accomplishments, these men bore witness to a deep faith in Christ and his Church. More considered joining religious life and was assiduous in his devotional practices. As a married man, he committed himself wholly to his vocation as a father. At the time, disciplinary practices with children tended to be severe, but More’s children testify to his warmth, patience, and generosity.

St. John Fisher was a model shepherd and demonstrated remarkable humility. He remained in the small Diocese USCCB Fact Sheet Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty www.usccb.org/freedom| Twitter: @USCCBFreedom Text “Freedom” to 377377 to receive updates WITNESSES TO FREEDOM STS. THOMAS MORE AND JOHN FISHER “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” of Rochester his entire episcopal ministry, devoting himself to his local church rather than seeking promotion to a larger, more powerful diocese. More and Fisher are well-known for opposing King Henry’s divorce. Ultimately, it was their refusal to sign an oath of supremacy that led them to be executed. King Henry VIII claimed to be the supreme head of the Church in England, asserting sovereign power over English Christians. Neither Fisher nor More could abide this claim, and their steadfastness to their consciences put them in conflict with the king. They were convicted of treason. When More made his way to the gallows, he is said to have stated, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” Both More and Fisher were patriots. They never rose up to incite rebellion or foment revolution. They were no traitors. But when the law of the king came into conflict with the law of Christ, they chose Christ. These men gave their lives for the freedom of the Church and for freedom of conscience. They bear witness to the truth that no government can make a claim on a person’s soul. Copyright USCCB.

Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, pray that we too will be good servants to our count.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Parents should avoid lecturing and start talking ~ Lecturing teenagers may feel like the right path to take, especially if they are star ng to develop bad habits or make poor choices, but lecturing is usually the least effec ve way to get your message across. Children tend to see lectures as condescending and abstract, and this detracts from the wisdom and advice you are trying to provide. Instead of lecturing, try to engage your child in calm, open conversa on that addresses the issue while allowing you both to talk about what’s going on.
