Don’t miss out on the fun!

Mary Ann Kantrow • RSR Presidentf you haven’t had your fill with campaign and election news in the media these days then I think I will be able to top you off. We are looking for 4 board members for this year’s election. The responsibilities include: attending the monthly

board meetings and helping plan club events. If you are interested please:

• write an outline (2 to 3 sentences) about yourself and how you can contribute to the club

• send your outline to me (mkantrow@ ford.com) no later than September 1 (snail mail: 5557 N. Territorial, Ann Arbor, MI 48105).

New board members will be announced at the Annual General Meeting on November 11. Becom-ing a board member is the best way to keep this club moving forward with your new ideas.

Our club has only two Driver’s Schools left this year (maybe only one depending on when you receive this newsletter). If you still want to take your Porsche out on the track please sign up early. The registration form is located in this newsletter with all the details. [umm… I ran out of space for the reg-istration form, so it’s not in the newsletter. Download it at www.pca.org/rsp/forms.html ~em] That’s the “Fast” part of this region’s events. We also have many “Fun & Friendly” events planned for the rest of the year: the Ride and Drive scheduled for September 9 and the Autocross planned for September 17 (hey — that’s another “Fast” event). The last “driving event” for the

year is the Fall Color Tour put on by Roger Garrell and Katie Sharp. They did a wonderful job last year and graciously volunteered to plan this event again. More details will be available in the next newsletter but the date is already scheduled for October 7.

I had mentioned the Annual General Meeting in my opening paragraph but I don’t want you to think

that this will be just another boring meeting. We are planning a Chili Cook-Off and bonfire after

the meeting (I promise to keep the meeting short). Please contact me at (734) 998-1403 if

you plan on attending with your favorite chili recipe.

The Meadow Brook Historic Races were held at Waterford Hill the weekend of August 5th. A few

of our club members participated in this event: Arnt and Clem Weierstahl,

John Buttermore and Jim Dunham. The Saturday race

was the most successful for our club with Arnt, John and Jim plac-ing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Sunday race was the most exciting for Jim. He decided to start last just for the challenge. Working his way through the field he managed to finish 3rd overall and 1st in class! Arnt finished 1st overall again! Congratulations on your wins!!

Hope to see you soon.~Mary Ann

ar enthusiasts need to drive the movement for environmental awareness. This may sound a bit contrary, but in light of our mini-gasoline crisis last month, it’s really got me thinking about the

current state of affairs in the automotive industry spe-cifi cally, and the world in general. (I have to admit, however, that anything which mitigates those cold Michigan winters, like the greenhouse effect, is very appealing to me.)

Keep On Truckin’?It’s been mentioned ad nauseum that there are

now a lot of trucks and SUVs on American roads. Even our favorite marque, Porsche, is getting into the SUV act with its fi nger-licking spicy “Cayenne.” These vehicles, apart from consuming a lot of space, also use more gasoline in general compared to passenger cars. They also tend to be impractical in countries which heavily tax their gasoline, such as Germany,

where gas is about $4.00/gallon. There, “3-liter” cars (3 liters of gas/1000 km, or 78 mpg) are more important. These 3-liter cars help keep vehicle operating costs down, and minimize the depletion of the earth’s oil reserves. According to estimates in Popular Science, at current consumption/discovery rates we would use up most of our oil supplies by 2050. While alarmist have always predicted the end of fossil fuels, one day they may be right. In this case, the year 2050 is as good as any. (OPEC believes its reserves will last until 2080.)

So how do you get people to buy these smaller, fuel effi cient cars instead of the still-popular SUVs? With gas taxes, of course. That would make it imprac-tical to keep such fuel-hungry vehicles. (I’ll deal with the trivial economic impact of eliminating the Big Three’s primary source of income in a future article.)

The Road to Heaven...…is probably under construction. Recent road

construction in the area also highlighted another vehicular problem — urban gridlock. I love to drive as much as I hate sitting in a traffi c jam. Traffi c jams also present environmental problems. They increase

the gas mileage of vehicles, for example. There’s also road rage, accidents and the guy with the smokey exhaust pouring through your window.

I would propose minimizing these issues by having useful public transportation and more bicycles. I rode either my bicycle or a bus to work for the eigh-teen months that I lived in Germany. This has added benefi ts beyond the environment. If you’re riding the bus, for example, you could read a book on your way to work. You’ve probably already seen people doing this in their car in rush hour, so it doesn’t even have to be a big change for some. Have you ever waited in line behind someone at the grocery store who has enough groceries to supply the Detroit Lions for a week in training camp? Well, if they were riding on a bike, they would only be able to buy about one bag’s worth of groceries. Plus, who wouldn’t mind drop-ping a few pounds? Biking could certainly lead to some weight loss. We would need to add more bike paths and sidewalks, which would be less expensive than ripping out Telegraph / I-94 / etc., and repaving them piece by piece.

A Stitch in Time...So what’s the payoff for all of this effort you ask?

Just think about it — more and more people riding bikes or taking buses (or even walking!), fewer vehi-cles on the road, cleaner air, more oil reserves. That means car enthusiasts can keep driving their cars longer, with cheaper gasoline in the long run, and with fewer people on the road. Who could resist such a dream situation!? Who says you can’t hug trees with one hand, while steering a car with the other? Go out there and lobby for more bike paths, public transpor-tation and gas taxes. You’ll be ensuring the future of our driving passions.

Next month: either world peace or the reunifi cation of CART and IRL, whichever is easier.

Waterford Driver Education Weekend

by Vaughan Scott • RSR Member

k, so the big new is, I passed… and the car ran beautifully, no real problems.

Then I get home and find out that I’ve snapped my front swaybar endlink. Hmmm… that explains why I started getting real sloppy on Sunday!

Anyway, the weekend started Friday night when we finished getting the car prepped. It was loaded and ready to go to the track. Unfor-tunately, due to a stuck starter at the last minute, we did not make it up to the track that night as planned for tech.

Up early, then, hop in the tow vehicle and head on up to the track — we had to get the car tech’d, since we didn’t make it to tech Friday night as planned. We unpacked all the junk we hope we wouldn’t need from the back of the truck, and tried to find my instructors while the crew got the car over to tech so we can run. Oops, I had to bring my paperwork over to tech... oops again, no brake light switch! They wouldn’t let the car out on the track without brake lights. I headed to the driver’s meeting with my instruc-tors while the crew went out to rig something up to give me brake lights. We then got a few laps around with the instructor to get familiar with the line, and went back to the paddock to check on the car.

Good news — the crew’s pulled off a mira-cle. The car has brake lights, so we’re ready to hit the track. The first session is rather unevent-ful — no passing, just drive around and figure out the lay of the land, where “the Line” that they had been talking about was, etc. Then we went out for the second session with open passing. Whoah! All of a sudden I went from calm parade laps to full race tilt with a bunch of guys with no more experience (for the most part) than myself, but evidently a lot more testosteron! It forced me to turn the heat up and get serious... until I pulled off partway up on Turn 4, Hilltop, with a loss of power. As I was losing power, I checked my rearview mirror — no oil on the track, no smoke. I couldn’t tell what the problem was, just that I’ve sure lost power! The car was flat towed back to the paddock where we inspected it. It looked clean, but hey, shouldn’t the distributor cap be on straight? Oops!

A ziptie I had wrapped around the distribu-

tor to make sure the triggering signal connec-tor wouldn’t pop out ended up prying off the distributor cap at higher revs! With the problem fixed, we were ready for the next session. With more track time throughout the day, I slowly started getting the feel of the track, learning how to get passed without losing my concentration. We finished off with a track walk at sunset with crews and instructors.

Day two started out with more of the same: first a tour around the track in instructors’ cars to get a feel for the correct line again (after butch-ering it so badly Saturday), then more open ses-sions. Fortunately for the crew, the starter had un-stuck itself during on-track sessions on Sat-urday at some point, and a check and warm-up of the car first thing Sunday AM revealed it to be happy and properly functioning again. Happy, happy crew! Unfortunately, a routine check of the tires at that point revealed them to not be faring as well, with one flat spot, which was to

grow during the course of Sunday, and general abuse of the already used tires showing. Sunday focused on driving in a relaxed fashion, learning the line better, without killing off the tires or car (or getting run over by faster traffic!). You have to finish Driver’s School in order to get your license!!!

Saturday we had managed to get one car on it’s lid, then two more on Sunday. Very bad, especially for Driver’s School (usual rate is one per race weekend!). They were also all in my run group. This necessitated a quick driver’s meet-ing, for a beating readily administered by the Chief Steward.

After finishing off lunch and some more practice sessions, we began practice starts. That was were we line up in a grid formation, pro-

(left to right) Byron, me (Vaughan), Brian, Todd, Judi, Sue, and Russ - Thanks Guys!!! James, who couldn’t make the photo op, was a huge help, too.

necessary, as a lot happens very quickly during a start, and it can all go bad just as quickly, with all the cars in the same section of the track. So, we practice. Remarkably, with all the chaos our group caused earlier, the three starts we were scheduled to do were flawless, with not even any contact between cars.

Finally, we were up for the final test, a prac-tice 5-lap race. Again, only finishing successfully mattered towards the license, not winning, so

again the goal was to keep it clean, relax and enjoy myself. Pulling out onto the track to get queued up for the start, I suddenly feel calm, comfort-able, and focused — for the first time all weekend! I sud-denly feel like I’m in the right

place, and like I can do this. I had a really good feeling after struggling with the car all afternoon. Surprisingly again, the group kept it clean... sur-prised and happy as I swung around Swamp Turn (Turn 8) and saw the starter giving me the finger! (one lap left, not that finger!!!) Once more around! I’d been left behind by the pack at that point and was doing my own clean, though boring, time trial laps — and got the checker! Pull in, park the car, hop out, and get my license! Then wait for racing to stop, and it’s Miller Time!!! ...trading lies with flaggers and crewmembers.

All in all, a very cool weekend... exhausting,

challenging, but very fun... when can we do this again!?

The aftermath... I got the car home and unpacked... boy am I tired. I put it in the air the next day, yanked the wheels and checked status — a broken front sway bar end link! No wonder I started getting really sloppy halfway through Sunday! Nearly looped in in 3, caught it somehow, as the rear end (with swaybar still intact) broke free suddenly waaay before the front end was ready to give up... add heavy trail braking and resultant massive oversteer... kept it going anyway, and didn’t even lose place to the two cars I swung by on the front straight! Anyway, it made for some really neat in-car footage, though the picture needs more work, camera positioning and settings and all... hope-fully we’ll have both good pics and video from Race 1. I fixed the swaybar link, put new tires on, fixed the electrical problems that showed up during a very miserable practice session Wednes-day, and we’re ready to go!

Best of all, thanks so much to the crew!!! Truly awesome gang, kept me afloat when I didn’t know my butt from a black flag, made sure the car was happy and well-fed. I really could not have done it without them. Now I understand why the NASCAR guys on the TV always thank their crews. Not because, like their sponsors, they have an obligation to, but because they really mean it! Now, if I could just figure out a way to convince these guys to come back! After all those push-starts, I don’t think cold beer is going to be enough!!! :)

Again, only finishing

successfully mattered… so the

goal was to keep it clean, relax

and enjoy myself.

The Return of Racer Xby Matt Huber • RSR Member

ast May a group of 10 people attended a Kart Racing School in Western Michigan. Within

the group was Racer X. Those long time readers of the BahnStormer should know

this famous (or infamous) driver. [Racer X once had an interesting outing during a driving school, in which the car he was driving got all dirty, and then tried to wash itself in a nearby body of water, all on the same corner. ~em]

True to form within the first four to five laps he had his first off track excursion resulting in finding the only stand-ing water on the property. He sent up a wall of water and mud. But at least this time his vehicle didn’t end wheels up. I now know why his first choice of motor sports is autocrossing. In the sea of asphalt that the course is set up, there are no bodies of water for him to find. As for the rest of the group there were plenty of spins and off-track inci-dents, though none were as spectacu-lar as Racer X’s.

The rest of the event can best be summed up as a big grinfest. From the first lap to the last, everyone had a great time. There was some trash talk-ing about who would be fastest, but it was all in jest. The usual happened, the fast people were slower than they thought they would be and the slow people were faster than they expected them-selves to be. So no one left disappointed.

The day started at 9:00 AM with some instruc-tions (10 to 15 minutes worth), and then we mounted our trusty steeds (karts). We received 4 practice sessions of approximately 20 minutes each. Then a series of qualifying sessions were run. Finally three races were run. Lunch was served at 1:00 PM. A shifter kart was brought out for everyone to do laps in. The next two hours saw each of us take 10 to 20 laps each. The whole day was filled with drivers already planning their return to the Karting school.

The shifter kart has a 125cc motor and 6 speed sequential gear box. The maximum speed is in excess of 100 MPH. Coming out of the hair-pin onto the front straight the kart’s front end would lift under acceleration. After doing 10 to 15 laps one is exhausted but at the same time comes out of kart with an unexplainable high. You’re guaranteed to be addicted. Speed, what

La drug!

The sleeper of the group was Vigen Darian. He started the day telling everyone on how slow he would be. Well folks I’m here to tell you, he qualified a blistering 3rd on the grid. So the next time Vigan tries to tell you how much slower he is, just say, “yeah, right.” He’s just trying to get a psychological edge on you.

Also, don’t tell my wife Dru but when we were at the track they had a small kart with a 50cc motor for kids 3- to 5-year-olds. My son Zach and I are already planning our trip to the track next year. Maybe you can join us and expe-

rience the fun first hand and get hooked on Karts like everyone who went this year did.

Bits and BytesStuff that must be true because we read it on the internetcompiled by your editors

Sexism A German colleague sent me this photo joke. The title says, “Mr. Weiher’s Philosophy for Better Living: Wife Leased. Porsche Bought.” It’s obvious that sexism (and humor) still exists out there. However, it is the BahnStormer’s policy not to promote such behaviour (especially the humor part), so please don’t e-mail me such nonsense ([email protected]). I’m already in trouble at home for printing this.

Car Phones: Unsafe at any speed? That was the title of a Detroit News article last July 31st. It discusses the dangers of using a car phone while driving. Here are some safety tips from the article:

• Position your phone where it is easy to see and reach.• Familiarize yourself with phone operations while car is

parked. • Use the speed dial feature for frequently called

numbers. • Dial in short segments, check traffic, dial next

segment. • Avoid stressful conversations. • Never take notes while driving. • Don’t answer the phone if it’s inconvenient. Although it’s not mentioned, I would add that you should try not to hit anything while driving. [Detroit News]

Articles: We have some! All articles should be sub-mitted to Lori Jo by the 1st of the month.

If possible, please use the e-mail address to minimize re-typing (and mistakes from us), or send a diskette. If you would like to include photographs, please send the photos and we’ll do the scanning for you. Eventually, we will return all materials to you, so please include a return address.

Mission: Mission statements are typically ignored and therefore trivialized in most organization. Hopefully, we can stay focused on our mission at the BahnStormer.

“The purpose of the BahnStormer (“BS”) is to promote the fun, fast and friendly character of the Rally Sport Region by providing timely and rele-vant information to our members in an entertaining style (at least, within our talents).”

If we don’t, then you can beat us with a wet noodle. If you have some constructive criticism about the BahnStormer, please keep it to yourself.
