WANTED FOR CASH! € €
Broken washing machines, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, tv's, tools,
& electrical items and clothes.N.B. I can no longer offer free collection of steel or plastic.
Working white goods, flat screen TVs, laptops, computers, tools, all
electricals, pine/solid wood furniture, quality sofas,
double beds, bicycles & odd or interesting items.
I had a complaint (he wrote in!) about
my breakfast show on Real Radio In-
ternational last month... a gentleman
took the time and trouble to write a
long(ish) message to me on Facebook
to ‘inform’ me that I had made an er-
ror on that morning’s show. Apparent-
ly I had said ‘Good morning everyone,
the sun’s up!’ which, according to him
was incorrect because at the time I
was broadcasting (and he was listen-
ing) – as it was ‘in fact cloudy’.
Fair point perhaps? Or should he be
getting out a little more no matter what
the weather...? I did however point
out that I was correct in my statement
and if he checked he would find that
the sun is ‘up’ every day, and has been
doing so for a number of years now...
the fact that he couldn’t see the sun
because of the clouds did not mean it
wasn’t there. He hasn’t replied.
In this month’s issue of All Abroad we
take a look at getting your N.I.E. and
offer ten very good reasons as to why
(if you are living or have a property
here) to sign on to the ‘padron.’
We interview Angel who up until last
year was one of the best known and
popular kids to be resident at the EM-
AUS children’s home in Elche. Now
he’s over eighteen years of age and
has to fend for himself. With the Span-
ish economy as it is finding work this
past year has been very difficult for
Angel so All Abroad Magazine decided
we should step in and see what we can
do – and guess what? We’ve found
some very kind, helpful and generous
people who have helped us to help him
– read Angel’s story inside.
All the usual info and some great jokes
from the official Great British Joke
Book in this month’s magazine and
don’t forget – if you’ve had an inter-
esting expat experience we would love
to hear about it.
Summer is here officially now and wit
the temperatures rising seemingly by
the day the region is filling with tour-
ists all turning a darker shade of pink
– by the hour. Welcome one and all!
It’s another mag packed with info,
advice and stuff to do in Spain this
month and as the days warm up, try
and relax with your copy of All Abroad
somewhere nice this month, and send
us a pic so we can print it! You could
be anywhere...sun bed, pool, bar or
even sober! Join in the summer fun
with All Abroad! Send your pics to:

The Padrón is the register kept by each Town
Hall in Spain, of the people who live in the
town- either as property owners or tenants.
The closest UK equivalent is the electoral roll.
It is compulsory for residents of more than
6 months in an area to ‘empadronarse’- to
be registered on the Padrón (as a separate
administrative process from residency appli-
cations) but many fail to do so.
Some of the advantages of ‘empadron-
amiento’ (being registered on the Pa-
drón) are:
1. It can provide taxation advantages (eg.
Spanish Succession Tax).
2. It enables children to be enrolled for local
education.
3. In the case of limited school places, it is
used as one of the criteria for awarding plac-
es (determining catchment area).
4. It is required in order to be registered for
local healthcare services.
5. It provides an entitlement to vote in local
and European elections.
6. In some areas, it is required to be able to
use municipal facilities at discounted rates.
7. Town Hall funding is affected by the num-
ber of people on the Padrón. So, registering
helps boost your local Town Hall’s resources
for local services and facilities.
8. It is necessary in order to purchase and
register a car in Spain.
9. It is necessary in order to marry within the
local municipality.
10. It is necessary for benefits/ social servic-
es access; and to use the local employment
agency (Job Centre equivalent) facilities.
Registration on the Padrón is a simple ex-
ercise- and is either free or just a nominal
charge is made, depending on the area. Spe-
cific requirements in terms of documentation
vary from town to town. So, before applying,
it’s always best to make a preliminary visit to
the Town Hall, to get a full up to date list of
requirements.
Getting an N.I.E.
In many cases, particularly for Spanish property sales and purchases; and inherit-ance matters, N.I.E. numbers (Spanish fiscal numbers) are of critical importance. They are usually required extremely urgently, in order to avoid delays in legal transactions and/or increases in tax liabilities. There are three principal ways to obtain N.I.E numbers:1. In person, in Spain at a National Police of-fice. This usually involves three stages: the attendance to present the paperwork and ID documentation; payment of the issuing tax; and finally, return (in person) to collect the N.I.E. Certificate (usually after 7-10 days). There are independent service providers available, who assist with the paperwork and provide guidance on the process. So, for in-dividuals who are able to be in Spain for the period indicated for this process (and whose knowledge of the Spanish language is ade-quate), it is quite straightforward.2. In person, at a Spanish Consulate office (for example, in the UK: in London, Manches-ter or Edinburgh). In this case, the process can be extremely lengthy and inconvenient, as the Spanish Consulate operates as a ‘post box’ for submitting the application to Madrid; and thereafter, communication has to be to a Spanish address. We would only usually rec-ommend this option in exceptional and non-urgent cases.3. Through an authorised representative, in Spain. There have been changes of practice and procedural requirements over the years; and also documentation requirements differ between areas of Spain. ID and legal repre-sentation has to be specifically proved, so ex-pert/ professional representation is generally essential, to avoid problems and delays.
The issue of N.I.E. numbers is one of the first points to be covered in any of our client cas-es. We provide full guidance and assistance to our clients in overcoming this legal hur-dle. Obtaining N.I.E. numbers is not usually a ‘stand alone’ service that we provide (al-though there are others who specialise in this service). However, we do have a system in place for our client cases, where we can

7Our own contributors - experienced for expat info
Spain’s fabulous weather, its rich cul-ture, its relatively modest cost of liv-ing, and its close proximity to other Eu-ropean countries, have always meant that it is a dream destination for many, to reside and to savour all the country has to offer. For those who are pre-pared to ‘take the plunge’, the demo-graphic changes in Spain over recent years; and the economic impact of the financial crisis have in many ways only added to its desirability and feasibility as a potential country of residence.
Official figures confirm that 13% of Spanish nationals have emigrated from Spain in the last 2 years. And as a re-sult of the impact of the economic crisis and concerns over taxation changes, a huge number of non-Spanish nation-als have returned to residency in their countries of origin over the same pe-riod. So, the total population of Spain now stands at around just 70% of the UK population. But Spain is almost 4 times larger than the UK!Also, the over-building in Spain during the pre-crisis period and subsequent Spanish property price crash mean that there remains a significant over-supply of properties- in many cases, owned by very keen sellers. So, a rela-tively under-populated country offer-ing clear quality of life benefits and incredibly attractive property invest-ment opportunities…
OK, so where’s the catch?!Many who have abandoned Spanish residency over recent years have ex-pressed concerns about taxation- in
particular, the impact of the Spanish Wealth Tax and Spanish Succession Tax.The Spanish Government’s recent re-introduction of the Wealth Tax; and obligation for Spanish nationals and Spanish residents to disclose (and be taxed on) overseas assets, was met with dismay by many. But in fact, the impact has been found by the vast ma-jority to be far less harsh than was originally feared.
Also, much has been made of the re-ductions in allowances in Spanish Suc-cession Tax. But again, under Spanish tax law, when expert estate planning advice is obtained and implemented, there are many ways quite legally and legitimately to reduce the impact of succession taxation.
As regards Spanish income tax and other direct taxes, there are agree-ments and practice directives in place between the Spanish Tax Authority and those of many other countries, to en-sure fair fiscal treatment in dual juris-dictional cases. So, for those who are properly advised and correctly meet their tax declaration and payment ob-ligations, the position (in most cases) is neither as complicated nor as oner-ous as might be feared.Of course, individual circumstances al-ways need to be considered carefully- it is never a case of ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to Spanish taxation and estate planning.
Many factors are relevant to determin-ing tax liability, including even which part of Spain you are dealing with.
In conclusion, we always recommend that before any decision or invest-ment commitment in Spain is made, our clients take the opportunity to un-derstand fully their fiscal obligations, and to implement their tax and estate planning accordingly. By planning in-telligently to reduce tax liability as far as Spanish law permits, and then promptly filing tax returns and pay-ing the tax that is due, one invariably achieves the most efficient result.Ignorance of Spanish tax law is no ex-cuse; and equally, proper awareness and fiscal compliance (in accordance with expert professional advice) need not be as financially devastating as many fear to be the case.

through the side of the fence and follow the canal all the way crossing over a tarred road on route and this irrigation canal will take you straight into the Park. Alternatively you can keep going on the La Marina road for about another 1km over the bridge and turn left at the next crossroads onto a dirt track road this will also take you to the canal turn right at the canal and again follow it to the park.
There are also another couple of entries / exits to the park which are on the San Felipe road which cir-cumnavigates the park. Hope you find a suitable way in and out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Total Cycling time: 4 HoursTotal Distance: Approx 45 Kms.
Summary: Beautiful, Peaceful, Scenic route over flat ter-rain, with lovely views and great cycle tracks.
Cycle Route 30.
This is a great little ride and suita-ble for all levels of cyclists including young children. You can either cycle to the nature reserve or you can take your car with the bikes on the back. There are numerous entrances to the park by cycle but if you are going by car you need to drive to Dolores then Catral head for and through San Felipe Neri and about 1km past you will see the sign post for the nature reserve.
In some signs it’s spelt El Hondo and others it’s El Fondo. (There are also
some new cycle routes to and from Crevillente from here and are well marked). Drive along this track and you will arrive in a large car park where you can leave your car and en-joy the miles of beautiful cycle and walking tracks.
Just past the car park there is the park information centre which is al-ways closed when we are their but we have been told in good faith that it is well worth a look. There are walkways and tracks all around the park and they are well signposted. There is also a viewpoint tower to climb up where
you can see all the lakes and beauti-ful wildlife you can also see for miles from here. All around the lake there are information boards with pictures of the various wildlife and plants.
If you are cycling to the park you are spoilt for choice of entries. If you cycle towards La Marina from San Fulgencio at the crossroads where right goes to La Marina (Iceland, Lidl, N332) or left takes you to Dolores there are 3 ca-nals turn left at the last one and cycle

The world today is not what it seems, and all that we are told, and what we are made to believe is not always the truth.
And Truth is exactly what I have been search-ing for, I’m so far down a rabbit whole there is no return! You see, the truth is, what I am about to tell you, I’d rather you not believe. I would rather you do some research, because believing is not the truth, only knowing is. The truth about what you might ask? The truth about the world we live in, the truth about who are we and why are we here? And how can we make a change!
Researching does not require much effort with the technology of the Internet, it’s not like you have to drag yourselves down to the library and sift through books to find the an-swers. At the press of a button, nearly all in-formation you wish to study is on the World Wide Web! Note, things I talk about will not be found on TV, the media or in newspapers, for it is information that will awaken many souls!
We are more than you could ever imagine, with endless possibilities to create a happy harmonious, peaceful life, world, and uni-verse. We are spirit having a human experi-ence, not the other way around. Everything in this entire universe is a vibration, vibrating on different levels. From the sun to the wind, a rock, a plant, an animal, a thought, a hu-man being, we are all vibrating at different levels.Every thought we have is sending out to the universe a vibration, either in harmony or disharmony, we transmit and receive these vibrations which are all energy. Every thought we have controls the way we feel, how we act, and the creation of our lives. When you are thinking in a negative way, feeling down, or low, notice, that one bad thing after an-other happens, we say things like, what else can happen! It can’t get any worse! Let me tell you, yes it can! In the same way when you are thinking in a positive light, you feel happy, you feel grateful, or you feel love. Re-member when you felt so in love, you felt you could move mountains, you were not even hungry, every day seemed wonderful and one great thing after another accrued.
The few elite that govern our world are not our friends, the system, our schools, banks, and governments do a great disservice to us all. If you actually took the time to research the truth, you would find none of the systems have worked throughout history!
Take a look at your life, look around the world you live in, does everything seem ok with you! Do you believe in religion? Will you research for true information, the facts that were hidden, and find out the truth on what was decided you should know and what you should not? Will you take the governments word that all the wars being fort, sending our loved ones to their deaths, is for a sovereign cause, or to attain more wealth for the elite?
I started this write by saying that nothing in this world is what it seems, I could continue to talk about the system, this matrix of delu-sion we slumber in, it is not that I want to cause fear, for that is the very thing we need to let go of. I write to give you information so that you yourselves can research, thus en-
lightening you on your journey to awakening, enabling you to take action if you so wish.
I see this as a battle of consciousness, know who you truly are, liberate your mind, free yourselves from the system and get to the truth, we are amazing spirits with endless possibilities to create a world of love and peace.
Ultimately, it’s all about choice, will you choose to believe all you are told, or, will you choose to find out truth, if not only to improve your life, how about your children? How about their children? Or maybe for hu-manity itself?

Unique BBQ selection
Firstly a great big thank you to all that have contacted me on [email protected] regarding vegetables. It does seem that the majority like vegeta-bles cooked lightly, a few do like them very well cooked, and there are a few that like the Spanish Style of Vegetables. Keep sending your comments and questions about any-thing to do with food.
Keeping on the vegetable theme you will see that our recipe this month is for Goats cheese tart. This is one of our most popular starters as it has a very light texture and yet is full of flavours. I adapt this simple recipe at home for a nice summer lunch.I dice onions red and green peppers courgette, aubergine and celery place on an oven tray coat with plenty of olive oil and sprinkle with a vegetable stock cube and season. I bake this vegetable mix in the oven stirring, occasionally, at about 200 until the vegetables are start-ing to get soft. I now stir in a spoon of pureed garlic.
I then take a sheet of Puff pastry, Mercadona sell quite a good one, lay it on greaseproof on a baking tray. The vegetable mix goes on to the pastry leaving clear pastry of about an inch all the way around the edge.I now add things like cherry tomato feta cheese or goat’s cheese. Egg wash the exposed pastry and bake in the oven at 210 until the exposed pastry has risen and is starting to become dark.

Tip of the month has got to be about pastry. Keep it cold for best results. If you are using frozen puff from Mercadona it is in sheets in a box. It defrosts in a few minutes, it can then be carefully unfolded, prepare the topping and pop back into the fridge.
1. Take a sheet of puff pastry cut to shape and size that you require. I normally cut to about 6ins across.
2. Slice a large tomato fairly thin. Place 2 or 3 of the slices of tomato in the centre of the pastry.
3.Now put on top of the tomato 2 or three slices of goat’s cheese and season with salt and pepper egg wash the exposed pastry and cook in a 210 deg pre heated oven. Normally the top of the oven is best.
4. Depending on the oven it should take about 5 to 8 minutes but do not keep opening and closing the oven too often
5. The pastry will rise around the edge and darken leaving the tomato and cheese within the pastry. Tastes great with salad and driz-zled with Balsamic.
6. Enjoy!
A tasty alternative to enjoy in the summer orindeed anytime of year!

Serve drizzled with balsamic and a salad of your choice.
Food is our passion, service is our pleasure.

We all have a moan at times about
life not being easy or just not go-
ing our way but when you speak
to someone like Angel Kouko
it puts a lot of those things into
very clear perspective. Angel was
born in the Ivory Coast and was
brought to Spain with his sister
by his father at the age of just six
years old following the death f his
mother in his home state. Pretty
soon his father had abandoned
Angel and his eighteen year old
sister to look after themselves.
The six year old Angel found himself in Ali-cante along with his sister and things were not easy for either of them. Eventually a friend’s mother managed to inform the au-thorities of their plight and after initially being taken into care in Alicante Angel found his way to the Emaus kids’ home in Elche where he lived for the next twelve years and this is where I met him in 2009 at the age of fifteen.
By then he had already proved himself to the staff and his fellow residents at the home as a kind and caring person; one who looked after the younger children who had found their way to the home fol-lowing difficulties at home brought on by their parents. It needs to be said now that the kids at Emaus are not there because of behavioural problems but because their parents could not (or in Angel’s case would not) take care of them.
At the age of eighteen the children have to leave the home and make their own way in life. A tough ask but Angel is a fighter and for the last two years (he left the home in 2012) Angel has trained as an electrician,
as a waiter and is adept at teaching sports and music (he loves his singing) in an at-tempt to find employment in tough times.I met up with him in June to talk about how things are going and to see if All Abroad and its readers could help. “All I need is a chance to show people what I can do,” Angel told me. “I’m willing to do any type of work but there are so few opportunities for someone like myself,” he added. So dear readers we’re looking to you for help. Can you find work for Angel? Perhaps like one of our kind readers last month (Else from Dona Pepa) you could employ Angel for the day painting in the house and moving around those electrical sockets of which there are never enough in Spanish houses! Else was more than happy with the standard of his work and his attitude. “He did a great job for me and I’ll be get-ting him back to help me paint the rest of the place very soon,” she said.
Although he speaks little English we can always help with translation and commu-nicating – and hey...it’ll be great practice for you to speak Spanish? Another small matter is tools and so we’re appealing to businesses etc to perhaps sponsor Angel with some tools to get him properly kitted out for work. If you’re a business or indi-vidual and would like to help Angel build a future after what has been a very tough start in life contact our editor Dave Bull 0n 606 540 408 who will happily bring Angel to you to show just what he can do.
He’s a nice guy and deserves a break in life we think and we hope our kind readers can help him along.Contact us: [email protected] Tel: 606 540 408

French fries do not originate in France.
Fries may well have originated in 19th
century France. However, as with so
many “inventions” / “discoveries” others
make claims as well. Belgium has been
mentioned in this regard. Between the
wars the Americans began to eat fried
potato and for some reason referred to
them as French fries. Will the truth ever
be known?
English muffins weren’t invented in Eng-
land.
As for English muffins: it appears that in
the USA muffins are known as ‘English’
muffins. Incidentally, Guy wonders if this
naming phenomenon is more widespread,
because in Wales we have what English
speakers call ‘Welsh cakes’, but indig-
enous old-timer call them ‘Round cakes’.
Back to the English muffins, I refer you
to this excerpt from Wikipedia: An old
English nursery rhyme, “The Muffin Man”,
describes a door-to-door purveyor of
muffins. The rhyme was known at the
time of Jane Austen in the early 19th
century, and a muffin man is mentioned
at one point in her novel Persuasion. The
muffins sold at this period were made
of yeasted dough and baked on a hot
griddle.
The etymology of the name is from moo-
fin first used in 1703, derived from the
Low German Muffen, the plural of Muffe
meaning a small cake, or possibly with
some connection to the Old French mouf-
flet meaning soft as said of bread.
Muffins may well originate as far back as
the 10th century, yet the muffin became
a fashionable bread during the 18th
century. By the beginning of the 19th
century, there were dozens of muffin fac-
tories in existence, and the “muffin man”
was a common sight.
Muffins are a quick-baking bread and
have become a tea-table staple. They are
usually split, toasted, buttered and then
eaten with a savoury or sweet topping
such as honey.

I am intolerant of those with food intolerances.
Seriously, in the year 2014 it seems that every 3rd person deems it the height of fashion to be Gluto-Lacto-Ovo-Bovo-Sucro intoler-ant, and to be frank it gives me the runs. Growing up in the 1970s I had the fortune/misfortune to have been brought up by parents who were in turn brought up in the shadow of ration books and powdered egg.
Don’t finish your main course and you don’t get any pudding: simple but effective. And I can never recall as a snotty-nosed 6 year old in 1979, that any of my mates queuing for their spotted Dick at School would ask the Dinner Ladies if the custard contained egg or aspartame.
So why now?A couple of years ago the Mrs jumped on the bandwagon and went for food intolerance testing on nothing more than a whim. She didn’t feel under the weather at the time but fell for the hype that unless she required just 4 hours sleep a night, or ran a Marathon every weekend, then there must be something wrong with her.
So she went for a few needles sticking in her arm, and spat on a few bits of litmus paper and the quack decided that she had intol-erance to “Cheese, Dairy, Carbs and Alcohol”.
So intolerant to around 75% of most people’s average diet - and oddly enough the exact same diagnosis that 7 other people who we knew to receive the testing got.
So 6 weeks of arsing around with a restricted diet, and messing around slowly introducing foods to ‘rebalance her body’, we found that she felt the sum total of no better at all.
So that’s why I find it so refreshing to eat in a Spanish Restaurant - better still a Menu del Dia at home-cooked take-it-or-leave-it bar.
A vegetarian would find dining out challenging: The eponymous green V rarely appears on a Spanish menu.
So I’m just wondering how a small-town local bar would deal with a potential diner who didn’t eat Ham, was allergic to eggs and was Dairy and Gluten intolerant.
Probably the same way any decent restaurateur should.
A couple of years back my Mother popped over to Spain for one of her regular visits / inspection trips.
Typically she would stay about a week and the Mrs and I would take the time to have a few days to chill out and take her here and there so we could all have a bit of a break.
After arriving in Spain late on the Saturday, the Mother wanted to take us out for a meal to say thank you for picking her up from the airport. We explained that as she didn’t visit us every week, it would only be fair that she chose where we went for lunch. Maybe seafood? : Living only 20 mins away from the Costa, and possibly the finest and freshest fish this side of Galicia would be an idea?
Paella or Fiduea perhaps? : Valencia being the home of Paella, where could be better to enjoy such a traditional dish?
Possibly Putchero? : An unusual twist on a typical Sunday lunch, and therefore not something she might enjoy every day?
A nice Tapas bar? : Why not try a range of different uniquely Span-ish foods?
Grilled Lamb or Rabbit maybe? : Cooked over an open Orangewood fire - one of the rustic specialities in the many Ventas in the Moun-tains overlooking our town?
Nope: The Mother explained that she had a craving for Fish and Chips.
Quite possibly the only food which is not widely available in our corner of Spain – and on the rare occasions when it is, the quality is dubious at best. Also, at home in the UK she lives within striking distance of at least 3 high quality Chippies, and can therefore enjoy a decent Chippy Tea whenever she liked – but no, she explained she had craving for Fish and Chips. Or ‘Baccalao con patatas fritas y puree de guisantes’ if you like.
I would bet my spleen that if I were to visit her in UK and suggest that we went out for a Paella for Sunday lunch she would ques-tion both my logic and my sanity. The availability of such a dish would be A) Highly unlikely and B) In the event of something being found, be both overpriced and barely edible.
So surely the same rules apply here as well? But no, she would not be swayed.
Had she been living in Spain for 6 months I might have under-stood, but having only set foot off the plane 24 hours earlier and with barely 5 days until she would be back at home you would have questioned her strength of resolve, but hey, the Mrs and I set off with heavy heart and sense of foreboding to find ‘Garry Rams-dens’ or ‘Fryer Tuck’s’.
Frozen fish, frozen Potato ‘fries’ as opposed to chips, mushy batter and fried in olive oil does not a decent Chippy make, and the Moth-er actually had the temerity to be surprised when it fell below her exacting standards.

2. Three working women have dif-ferent careers. If only one of state-ments 1, 2 and 3 are true, can you tell whether or not Mary is a nurse? 1. This statement is only true if state-ment 5 is false. 2. This statement is true if statements 4 or 5, or both 4 and 5 are true. 3. This statement is false only if both statements 6 and 1 are true. 4. Mary is a nurse 5. Karen is an artist. 6. Sarah is a photogra-pher.

SOLUTIONS:
1. The year’s date reads the same when turned upside down. That will not happen again until 6009 2. Mary is not a nurse. The way to solve this riddle, is to consider statements 4, 5, and 6 and create a chart of all possible true and false an-swers. Next, fill in the chart according to state-ments 1 through 3. You will discover that there is only one line where only one of statements one, two and three are true. Thus, it is determined that: Statement 4 and 5 are false and statement 6 is true.3. A gorilla walks into a bar and says
to the bartender “I’ll have a beer
please”. The bartender serves him a
beer and the gorilla hands him a 100
dollar bill. The bartender looks at this
as an opportunity for a quick buck
and gives the gorilla a 1 dollar bill
back for change. The gorilla is drink-
ing his beer and after a few minutes
the bartender goes up to the gorilla
and says, “You know, we don’t get to
many gorillas in here”.
The gorilla replies, “No wonder, at 99
Euros a beer”.
