WHAT DOES NOCTURNAL MEAN?

An owl is nocturnal. Nocturnal means an owl sleeps during the day and is awake at night.

Some other animals that are nocturnal include: bats, deer, raccoons, fox, wolves, and crickets.

Owls live everywhere except Antarctica

They can be found in forests and mountains

WHERE DOES AN OWL LIVE?

WHAT DOES AN OWL EAT AND HOW DOES IT GET ITS FOOD?

• Owls eat: snakes, mice, rabbits, birds, and insects.

• They get their food by hunting at night.

HOW ARE OWLS AND HUMANS DIFFERENT?

• Owls have wings, feathers, beak, talons (claws); humans have two arms and hands, skin, a mouth, and nails

• Owls can turn their heads all the way around, humans cannot

• Owls have yellow feet, humans feet are not yellow

• The eyes of an owl only look straight, humans’ eyes look straight, side-to-side, and up and down

• Owls have four toes: two point forward, one points backwards, and one toe is reversible

Humans have five toes on each foot, all pointing forward

• Female owls are usually bigger, human men are usually bigger

HOW DO OWLS PROTECT ITSELF?• They can go in their home

• Camouflage

• Use its wings to deflect

• Fly away

• Use its claws to defend itself

• Use its beak to peck/bite

• Hiss and snap
