INTRODUCTION TO SEARCH ENGINES

Search engine is a special information retrieval program designed to find information on the computer system especially.

These are special websites where you do not have to shift through categories. You just have to type what you’re looking for into the search engine and it will display all the related links.

Popular search engines of this era include Google , Bing, Ask, Yahoo, Altavista, Infoseek, Excite etc.

HOW DO SEARCH ENGINES WORK?• Through links, search engines’ automated robots, called “crawlers,” or

“spiders” can reach the many billions of interconnected documents.

• Once the engines find these pages, they next decipher the code from them and store selected pieces in massive hard drives, to be recalled later when needed for a search query. To accomplish the monumental task of holding billions of pages that can be accessed in a fraction of a second, the search engines have constructed datacenters all over the world.

• These monstrous storage facilities hold thousands of machines processing large quantities of information. After all, when a person performs a search at any of the major engines, they demand results instantaneously – even a 1 or 2 second delay can cause dissatisfaction, so the engines work hard to provide answers as fast as possible.

FAMOUS SEARCH ENGINES

Google: Being the most popular among all. Google is widely used by all the masses.

Bing: Coming on number 2, Bing used to be quiet famous before but with the gradual increase in the use of google, it lost it’s significance as the top one.

Yahoo: Yahoo still manages to secure the rank number 3 with an estimated of 300 million monthly users.

Ask: It is not quite among the favorites but still manages to be useful with an estimated of 245 million monthly users worldwide.

AOL: The AOL search has been long quite forgotten but still draws up fair 125 million monthly users worldwide. Not bad.
