HORIZON THEATRE TSHIRTtshirt design 2010

The tshirt for the 2010 season at Horizon Theatre Company in Atlanta, GA.

We go on about “less is more”- which we define as the principle that good design can lead to

more efficient use of materials and less consumption of resources with no sacrifice in utility. This

show presents two challenges. The first, to make use of the unique properties of industrial wool felt

— its density, texture, pliability, a

nd strength. And second, to transform a flat surface into a volume

using only the simplest of operations. As it happens, these challenges turned out to be mutually

beneficial. The solutions become interesting forms with inherent functionality. Berkeley, California–

based designer, Josh Jakus is dedicated to making experiential connections between form and

function. His UM Bags are designed to foster a more intuitive understanding of all objects in the

people who use them. When open, the piece lays completely flat. When zipped, the piece turns

into an organic 3-dimensional form. Minimalist, mathematical and marvelous.

SPROUT EARLY LEARNING CENTER identity design 2008

Monica KaufmannWSB-TV1790 Peachtree St.Atlanta, GA 30308

Tuesday, September 6, 2007

Dear Ms. Kaufmann,

We are an new Early Learning Center located in Midtown Atlana. We just completed our first quarter with our students and it was a huge success! The students are meeting and exceeding the goals that have been set for the program.

Briefly, our program focuses on engaging young people artistically. Our program features 5 tracks: Musical Performance, Dance, Theatre, Fine Arts and Art Appreciation. We service youth from all communities around Atlanta and are excited about the community involvement that we are building through the children’s parents, teachers and sponsors.

We would love to be able to showcase the abilities and accomplishments of the students in the program. We are aware that your station highlights one community group or organization a month for their work with uplifting and encouraging Atlantans. Our program is doing just this and an opportunity to share this with a larger audience would be exactly what is necessary to increase momentum and have an even greater impact.

If you are interested in talking with, visiting or filming Sprout, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Thank you,

Keith RamseySchool Director

Shooting Star

A deliciously bittersweet romantic comedy.

A soulfully insightful universal com-ing of age story.

A moving story of ordinary people and extraordinary change.

Make-believe that celebrates the di-versity and spirit of our youth.

A powerful, honest, and wryly funny musical journey.

A wild and wisecracking (and sometimes shocking) comedy.

REALITY VERSUS PERCEPTIONbook design 2008

An Artist Book designed as an continuation of several class projects exploring race relations in Atlanta. It juxtaposes current and historical images and text about the placement of races in Atlanta, and the forces that take away the opportunity for choice about those placements.

Kathleen and Patrick were getting married in a Cathedral that featured stained glass and having their reception at an Art Museum with a large mosaic. The resulting design reflects these elements as well as their desire for a clean, classic yet contemporary wedding brand.

The Marriage Celebration of

The remembrance candle lit before the

ceremony by Caitlin Lynch, Erin Melarango

and Heather Weil has been dedicated in

honor of Timothy Patrick Lynch, loving

father of the groom. Tim will always be

remembered for his strength, his courage

and most of all his charisma and charm.

In addition to Tim, we hope you take time

to remember all of the friends and family

members who are unable to be with us

today. While they may not physically be

here, we know each one of them is smiling

down and celebrating with us.

We would sincerely like to thank each

and every one of you for celebrating our

marriage with us today. In one way or

another, your love and support has helped

guide us to this very special moment in our

lives. We look forward to sharing many more

joyous memories with you in the future.

Love,

Kathleen and Patrick

Christina and Jason wanted their wedding branding to be charming, whimsical and unique. The elements were inspired by the bride’s excitement about her wedding flowers and the fact that the wedding was on the water.

TraditionsWe have incorporated traditions from our families and cultures to celebrate this day.

Wedding Almonds Jordan almonds, traditionally called “confetti” or “bomboniera,” wrapped in tulle and tied with a ribbon, are traditionally given to guests during Italian weddings and were sometimes tossed at the bride and groom as a symbol of fertility. There are usually five almonds in each sachet, to represent health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and long life.

CAnnoli This Sicilian dessert dates back to the Saracens or even to pre-Christian times. Also called Turkish hats, many think that the cannoli is a result of the Arab influence in Sicily. A cannoli consists of a fried, rolled wafer, filled with sweetened ricotta cheese and chocolate drops. Named for their pipe-like shape and intended as a treat at Carnevale, cannoli spread through Italy and were eventually a fixture in almost every pastry shop. The tube-like shapes were thought to be symbols of fertility.

in HeAven THere is no Beer PolkA Composed as a music score in 1956, the German polka became very popular for celebrating the existential pleasures of beer drinking. Jason and his friends enjoyed this polka on many occasions as they cheered on the Fighting Souix hockey team. Opa Buettner was an avid fan of polka. Jason remembers hearing polka played continuously at Oma and Opa’s home.

TArAnTellA This is an Italian folk dance that originated in Southern Italy. The name is probably derived from the tarantula spider. Some say the dance originated to combat the poisonous effects of the spider’s bite, and others say that it was a “courtship” dance. It was considered unlucky to dance it alone, so a couple or two or three females usually dance together. Nonna Cupani used to sing and dance the Tarantella at weddings and in living rooms.

dollAr dAnCe The dollar dance, money dance, or apron dance has become a traditional part of wedding receptions throughout several regions of the United States. It originated here at the turn of the twentieth century with the influx of European immigrants, and probably stems from a Polish custom in which men and women form two lines and pay a dollar to dance with the bride or groom. The Morgans (Jean Cupani’s family) include this tradition in weddings, and Jean and Joe Cupani danced the dollar dance at their wedding.

FirsT dAnCe The couple discovered this song and realized that it described how they felt when they met and began to date. As they continued to get to know one another, they realized that they connected on many levels, including a spiritual level. “Hey Soul Sister” captures just what they felt and continue to feel for one another.

Heirlooms Christina wears the gloves and carries the handkerchief that her Grandmother Morgan wore and carried on the day of her wedding, March 30th, 1942.

sPeCiAl AneCdoTes A dear friend of Jean and Joe’s, the Reverend William T. Sterling Jr. was also the minister of the first church that Christina attended. He baptized her on March 20th, 1983. He is currently the Conference Superintendent for the Easton District of the United Methodist Church.
