A poor 13-year-old peasant boy simply called Asta’s son is the main character. He later learns his name is Crispin. He is befriended by a large juggler

called Bear. Father Quinel is Cripin’s ally. An enemy is the manor steward JohnAycliffe. Lord Furnival is the absent landlord of the manor.

The day after his mother dies Crispin finds himself wrongly accused of theft and on the run for his life. Fleeing the tiny village and the only life he has ever known Crispin runs into

Bear, a travelling juggler. Bear, though rough on the outside, comes to love and protect Crispin. Crispin discovers he is the illegitimate son of the manor and trades his birthright for Bear’s life.

I enjoyed the book. It was fast paced and exciting. There were many twists and turns in the action.My favorite part is when Crispin sees a painting of his father and discovers who he really is.

I would recommend this to everyone who enjoys action stories.

I also have read the sequel Crispin at the Edge of the World.
