Alice May Dempsey was born June 26, 1929 at Lemmon, SD to Leo and Evangeline (Head) Dempsey. She was raised in the Athboy/ Glad Valley area along with four brothers and three sisters. After graduating from Isabel High School in 1947 she ventured to Aberdeen, SD, to work as a telephone operator. Alice was united in marriage to John M. Megin- ness on January 2, 1950 at St. Barthomews Cath- olic Church in Glad Valley, SD. Following their marriage, they made their home in Ipswich, SD, where John worked for the REA. In 1952 they moved to a farm 4 miles NE of Isabel where she resided the rest of her life. Alice was a devout Catholic, active in St. Marys guild, spending many years teaching religion classes and being part of the prayer blanket minis- try. She was also a long-time member of the Liberty Belles extension club where she enjoyed many friendships. Alice bought The Buttonholefabric shop in the 80’s, enjoying lots of coffee and conversation. She was an excellent seamstress. In 2014 Alices daughter Cathy and granddaughter Sarah took Alice on a trip to Ireland. They visited the areas where the Dempsey and Meginness families originated. Mom & Grandma

A million times we thought of you, A million times we cried,

If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died.

In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still.

In our hearts you hold a place No one could ever fill.

It broke our hearts to lose you.

But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you The day God took you home.
