Social networking has become a huge part of many people’s personal lives, and is being used as an effective marketing tool by businesses. To date, I’ve avoided setting up a Facebook page or Linkedin account, fearing they would require time I just can’t afford to spare. Recently, however, I became a fan of Twitter, mostly fol-lowing comedians to get a laugh at the end of a long day. Over the years, I’ve used this newsletter on many occasions to air complaints or share my roofing experiences, so I was intrigued by Twitter’s requirement to “vent” in 140 characters or less. The immediacy of publicly sharing a thought or issue, and challenge of craft-ing it into a concise rant, piqued my interest. As I am writing this, I just set up a Twitter account, called “RooferVents”, where I will “tweet” about roofing topics, hopefully in a humorous way. Some of the tweets will certainly be topical in nature: RooferVents BRAND NEW 2010 Florida Building Code debuts 3/15/12. In related news, thatch will be the featured material at this year’s FRSA Trade Show I will also tweet about issues concerning our industry: RooferVents EPA’s Lead Rule important for inte- rior, but I never saw a kid hanging over the edge of a roof, chewing on the fascia board! Omit Roofers! RooferVents NRCA says fall protection ropes often more dangerous than slide guards. OSHA immediately mandates “Maypole Dance Training” for all roofers. Opinions expressed in any of the articles submitted to the Shear Bull are not necessarily the opinions of the Palm Beach County Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association. The Shear Bull is a forum for those involved in the roofing industry including building officials & inspectors. And sometimes it may just be a goofy anecdote you can relate to: RooferVents Worker stepped on rotted sheathing and leg went thru kitchen ceiling. I charged customer $400 for new skylight. Lemonade From Lemons! Efforts will be made to refrain from being too mean-spirited (which will be a challenge with some topics). I will try to steer clear of polarizing topics, like politics, religion, and college football. If you would also like to vent, I will be happy to post any responses that follow the same parameters. If you don’t want to partici- pate, I hope this puts a smile on your face once in a while. Well, I have to go pay some bills…..that reminds me of one last tweet: RooferVents Did every1 have fun paying their Unemployment Tax Assessment for interest on $ FL borrowed from Fed & didn’t repay for unemp insurance. Message From the President

Reminder: Building Code Changes

Our February meeting discussed the new changes to the building code that are to take aect March 15, 2012. We welcomed Joe Sherpitis of the PBC Building Department, he spoke of the changes to ASCE 7-10, the windmap and zones, as well as discussion of the exposure category “D” and aects on the manufacturer product approvals. Mike Du from Icynene also joined our meeting to address your concerns on the spray foam in the attics and how this aects the roof systems. This continues to have more questions than answers for the roong industry and will take more time to be addressed before the roong industry will embrace this product.
