q Rowan University acquired HVS (MarkIV model) from the United States ArmyCorps of Engineers (USACE).
q Typically used to evaluate flexible(asphalt) and rigid (cement)pavements.
q Apply uni- and bi-directional loadingalong with advanced temperaturecontrol (heating and cooling systems).

Why Asphalt Overlays?
![Page 13: Ali-HVS Evaluation of Thin Asphalt Overlays€¦ · HVS Evaluation of thin Asphalt Overlays on Composite Pavements Ayman Ali, Ph.D. Manager, Center for Research and Education in Advanced](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022042806/5f6a6104d89721252121fe66/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
q Around 50% of NJDOT’s roads arePCC pavements.
q These roads are generally in poorcondition.
q Thin overlays are typically utilized toextend the life of these pavements.
q However, these overlays have beenperforming poorly in the field.
Thin Asphalt Overlays (Need)
13
![Page 14: Ali-HVS Evaluation of Thin Asphalt Overlays€¦ · HVS Evaluation of thin Asphalt Overlays on Composite Pavements Ayman Ali, Ph.D. Manager, Center for Research and Education in Advanced](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022042806/5f6a6104d89721252121fe66/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
q Conduct accelerated full-scalepavement testing to predict theexpected life of four thin asphaltoverlay treatments used on PortlandCement Concrete (PCC) pavements.

Research Approach
![Page 16: Ali-HVS Evaluation of Thin Asphalt Overlays€¦ · HVS Evaluation of thin Asphalt Overlays on Composite Pavements Ayman Ali, Ph.D. Manager, Center for Research and Education in Advanced](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022042806/5f6a6104d89721252121fe66/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Research Approach
16
Conduct Laboratory TestingOverlay Tester, Asphalt Pavement Analyzer, & AASHTO T283
1
Construct six full-scale pavement sections at CREATEs (includes instrumentation)2
Apply accelerated loading on each section using a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS)3
Monitor performance as loading progresses.4

q A total of six sections were constructed atCREATEs accelerated pavement testingfacility.
q Combinations of the four overlays withvarying thicknesses.
q The supporting PCC pavement structurewas similar for all sections.
q The sections were instrumented using:asphalt strain gauge, thermocouples, compression gauges, LVDTs, and pressurecells.

q One section, out of the six, will be subjected toloading using the HVS until failure (i.e., failing onesection at a time or a total of 300K passes).
q Air Temp. around section is controlled usingCREATEs Cooling/Heating System (25oC).
q Therefore, HVS loading will be conducted in thefollowing sequence: Section 1 loaded until failure, followed by Section 2, followed by Section 3, andso on.

q Loading will commence by applying, a 25 kNwheel load in a uni-directional mode at aspeed of 5 mph for 40,000 passes.
q Load magnitude will then be increased from25 kN to 40 kN while all other testparameters remain the same for another40,000 passes.
q Finally, load magnitude will be increasedfrom 40 kN to 60 kN after 80,000 passes.
q Each section will be loaded 22 hours a day;two hours for maintaining the HVS.

q The joint between the two concrete slabs isprogressively opening with the increase innumber of loading passes applied on top ofsection.
q Joint opening in section 1 after 260,000 loadingpasses was around 0.022 inches (about 0.0175in. for section 2)
q A similar trend has been observed for the tensilestrains at the bottom of the HMA overlay layer.
q Section 2 is currently experiencing approximately400 µe (tensile) at the bottom of the HMA overlay.
