February 02/11 PTA Meeting02/21 Bingo Night02/26 Invention Expo and STEAM Night

Principals UpdateDear Algonkian Parents, Our annual Invention Expo and STEAM night is coming quickly. The event will be on Wednesday, February 26 from 6:00-8:00. At 6:00 please gather in the gym to view the inventions of our students. Students will be at their display describing their invention. At 6:30, the STEAM activities around the school will begin. A flyer with all of the activities and events for that night will be sent in an e-mail the week before the event.

Students in grade 3rd -5th have access to SOL pass https://www.solpass.org/ Students should look for Algonkian Elementary with the password alg. Students can review any of the topic they are currently learning in any subject.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 11 for our PTA meeting. At this meeting we will have around 20 or more summer camp vendors to talk to parents about their programs. It is never too early to plan for the summer. Parents will have the opportunity to walk around to the different vendors and gather information to make the right choices for their child.

I want to remind parents that throughout the year they should update any new information in parentvue such as phone numbers or early release. If we ever have bad weather and students are being released early we use the information you place in parentvue to know how they will be getting home. If there is no information in the early release section, then students will go home their normal way.

Happy February everyone! Think Spring! With warmer weather right around the corner you may be wanting to donate those spring and summer clothes that your student’s have outgrown or that you just don’t wear anymore. Algonkian will be holding a Spring and Summer clothing donation drive March 16th through April 3rd. More information will be coming home in the next couple of weeks.

I have another donation opportunity for us. Irene’s Prom Closet collects items for high schoolers to use for Homecoming and Prom events. They set up boutiques at each high school and welcome those in need to shop the boutique for free. Please visit their website to find out what type of donations they accept. www.irenespromcloset.com.

I mentioned this new Program in December but wanted to give everyone a reminder. Loudoun County has launched a new Information and Referral Program for Health and Human Services. Information can be found at www.loudoun.gov/humanservices. The Program is a call based service, available Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The goal of this new Program is to quickly and effectively connect County residents to the services they need.

In my December newsletter I sent out a big Thank You to all of our generous families who donated to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots donation drive. Recently in the local paper Frank Holtz, Loudoun County Toys for Tots Coordinator, wrote an article with some amazing statistics that I wanted to share. The donation drive started in 1947 and remains a huge success each year. This year the donation drive collected and distributed 26,747 toys to area families and nonprofit organizations in support of 8,084 deserving children! Thank you again for your continued generosity!

From the Health Clinic

It’s that time of year. The winter season often brings with it infections such as:

· Streptococcal infections, which cause strep throat· Respiratory infections, such as Influenza, and common colds· Gastrointestinal illnesses which can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrheaTo help prevent the spread of these types of illnesses we encourage you and your family to:· Practice and encourage good hand hygiene: Washing one’s hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer regularly is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.· Encourage respiratory etiquette among students and staff. In other words, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, your sleeve or elbow during coughing and sneezing.· Encourage children to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth.· Keep your child home if they are ill and stay home if you are ill yourself.

○ Individuals should stay home from school, work and errands when sick.○ o Ill students or staff should remain home until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours, without the use of

fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin.○ · Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest○ Avoid close contact with people who are sick.○ Get a flu shot. Talk to your health care provider about getting you and your child vaccinated against the flu. The

single best way to protect against flu is to get vaccinated each year. It’s not too late!!○ Most individuals will be protected against influenza within 2 weeks after vaccination.○ Further influenza information is available online at http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemiology/influenza-flu-in-virginia/

Thank you for helping to keep our students healthy and in school!
