Transformations

Translation: shifts the graph of a function up, down, right, or left.

If a and b are numbers greater than 0, then do the following:

Translation Effect on coordinates

Right a units (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

Left a units  (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

Up b units  (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

Down b units  (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

ex. A line has the points (‐4, 0), (0, ‐2), and (2, ‐3).

Find the points after a translation of 1 unit up and 2 units to the right.

Reflection: reflects the graph of a function across the x‐axis or

y‐axis.

If a and b are numbers greater than 0, then do the following:

Reflection   Effect on coordinates

Across the x‐axis (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

Across the x‐axis  (x, y) ‐‐> ( ______, _______)

A line has the points (‐2, ‐1), (‐4, 2), and (1,3). Find the points after a reflection across the x‐axis.

Finding Slope:

Slope = riserun

ΔyΔx

y1 - y2

x1 - x2= =

ex. (0, 8) (-1, -5) ex. (7, 3) (-2, 3)

ex. (-6, 11) (5, -2) ex. (7, -3) (7, 8)

Find the Linear EQ:

ex. m = 4 thru (4, 3)

ex. thru (-4, -5) and (4, -1)

ex. thru (-1, -4) and (-2, 5)

ex. thru (-1, 3) and (3, -1)

Intercepts:

y-intercept: The value of y at the point where a line or graph intersects the y-axis.

The value of x is zero at this point.

x-intercept: The value of x at the point where a line or graph intersects the x-axis.

The value of y is zero at this point.

ex. y = 2x - 3 ex. x + 3y = 12Find the x and y intercepts:
