On Eagle's Wings is a powerfully moving "prayer of passage" by Michael Joncas, arranged in this edition for S.A. T.B. voices by Mark Hayes. It is equally appropriate forschool concerts, especially graduation or baccalaureate programs, and for worship.
In rehearsal, strive for a very fluid legato with sensitive text declamation. Sing the anthemon a focused neutral syllable such as "noo" until uniform choral timbre and goodintonation are achieved. Many of the phrases begin with an anacrusis or "pick up" (e.g.,mm. 6-8). Avoid the temptation to unduly accent the anacrusis. Instead, sing the anacrusislightly, with forward motion to the downbeat of the next measure, and emphasize theword on the downbeat (e.g., "raise" in ill. 7).
Appropriate for worship services throughout the year, On Eagle's Wings may beespecially appropriate for baptisms, funerals, weddings, as a benediction anthem or forearly Lent. Suggested corresponding lectionary readings for Lent include Deuteronomy26: 1-11, Psalm 91, Luke 4: 1-13 and Romans 10: 8b-13. One basic homiletical theme islife passages: God is ever present to guide and sustain us, in joy and in sorrow, as wejourney through life.
Michael Joncas is Campus MinisterlEducation Coordinator for the Newman Center atthe University of Minnesota. He received his B.A. degree in English from St. ThomasCollege and an M.A. in Liturgical Studies from Notre Dame, and is currently workingtowards an M.A. in Systematic Theology at St. Paul Seminary.
Mark Hayes is an award-winning concert pianist, composer and arranger of sacredchoral, piano and orchestral music. With over 400 published works to his credit, Mark hasalso recorded numerous solo piano albums and has received the Gospel MusicAssociation's prestigious Dove Award, which is equivalent to a Grammy in gospel music.A graduate of Baylor University, he has served as an adjunct professor of composition atMidwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.
