Alfred Nobel’s First Death

About a hundred years ago, a man looked at the morning newspaper and to his

surprise and horror, read his name in the obituary column. The newspapers had

reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. His first response was shock.

Am I here or there?

When he regained his composure, his second thought was to find out what people

had said about him. The obituary read, “Dynamite King Dies.” And also, “He was

the merchant of death.” This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read

the words “merchant of death,” he asked himself a question, “Is this how I am go-

ing to be remembered?” He got in touch with his feelings and decided that this

was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started

working toward peace.

His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize.

Just as Alfred Nobel got in touch with his feelings and redefined his values, we

should step back and do the same.

Dear Parents,

The Naidoc celebrations held at the school last Friday were excellent. We hosted near-

ly 400 students from our Clifton cluster. Mrs Suzanne Cavanagh our Senior Education

Officer officially opened the festivities for the Director and Mr Phillip Dreise of the

CEO made acknowledgement to country.

The behaviour of all students celebrating the day was exemplary and the Aboriginal

Dancers and interest tables were a great way to celebrate the Aboriginal Culture.

A beautiful Boomerang Trophy was unveiled as the floating trophy for various activi-

ties at all future Naidoc Celebrations. This year the schools designed a new Australian

flag. The quality of entries was excellent and the judges gave first place to St Francis

de Sales. Thank you to all the children who helped in the design and a special thanks

to Mrs Harris who put all the ideas together. Congratulations and thank you to Mrs

Tickner for her wonderful organisation of the day.

BUSH DANCE DATE CLAIMER

On Saturday night September 3, the school will be

holding a Bush Dance. This will be our celebration

for Father’s Day this year. The students will be

taught various dances during term 3 and will be per-

forming some items as well as teaching parents some

toe tapping numbers.

There will be a camp oven meal provided at a mini-

mal cost. BYO will apply. The evening will com-

mence at 6pm approx.

Prior to the start of the evening, the children’s class-

rooms will be open to showcase some of the activities

that they have undertaken during the year to date. The

classrooms will be open from 5.30pm.

Please keep this date free in your diary as we are an-

ticipating a lovely social evening together for the

whole school community. More details will follow

early in Term 3.

Carnival on Tuesday.

He is now off to the

Well done Ben!

SCHOOL FEES School Fees are now overdue. Please endeav-

our to pay outstanding amounts as soon as pos-

sible.

Please remember that these fees help with the

smooth running of the school and are vital to

pay for most of our everyday expenses.

It would be appreciated if any families having

difficulty meeting this commitment could con-

tact me as soon as possible.

2012 Enrolments

As we are fielding enquiries for enrolments for

2012, we need to know what spaces we have

available. To help in this regard, it is important

that current school families who will have a

child entering Prep in 2012 complete an enrol-

ment form as soon as possible. (We already

have a healthy enrolment for the Prep class

next year and we will only have limited plac-

es.)

Interviews will be held from the 25th to the

28th July.

It is also important that families who will be

leaving the school at the end of 2011 let us

know as soon as a decision has been finalized.

NAIDOC DAY THANK YOU

A very special thank you to Caroline Stace

and all the parents who helped her to cater

for lunches last Friday. Everyone had their

meal on time, thanks to your great effort.

Thank You from Year 6/7

We would like to thank Janet and Don

Wilkinson for their recent donation of a bale

of hay which will be used as mulch for our

garden. We would also like to thank Chris

and Phillip Moar of Pilton (who were

approached by Brad Giggins) for their kind

donation of a bag of fertiliser. These

resources will help in the preparation of our

gardens for next season's crop.

Year 6/7 Green Thumbs.
