Zwyssigstrasse Residential Complex is located in Zurich, Switzerland in the district of Altstetten. The climate is quite mild, ranging from the low thirties in winter to high sixties in summer. In addition Zurich receives a lot of precipitation through out the year, either in the form of rain or snow.
The sun angles during winter and summer become a huge determining factor for the design and location upon the site. By using an ‘L’ shape there was a possibility to optimize the winter sun exposure into the living function’s windows and summer sun to light and
warm the backyard space for residents to utilize and enjoy that space.

Society is faced with a future that will require significant change in the way we live. A growing number of people, the so called baby boomers, will live well into their 80s and 90s - with many of their later years spent actively and in good health.
While there is some historic precedent, contemporary architecture for multi-generational living is only now beginning to be considered architecturally. Designing to bring the generations back together under one roof can aid a family is multiple aspects; such as economically,
assisting with child care, assisting with daily expenses, and other needs that keeps a family afloat. Multi-generational living is beneficial for the family and for the economy.

Obesity trends are rising around the world at an alarming rate every year. A majority of the population is physically inactive or inadequately fulfilling the suggested amount of daily activity of thirty minutes. Designers have already started to address the problem by designing
parks, open spaces, office buildings, and other public entities according to the active living definition. (Active Living - a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routine). But, this idea needs to be brought home.
Physical activity, on
the complex, has been integrated at two different scales: the site and the unit.
At the site scale there is a fitness center for all residents, a grass lawn that can be utilized for a multitude of activities, and a rubberized geometric

To increase movement of the residents within their homes the main living functions are divides between two floors; specifically the kitchen and family room. This separation is to encourage exercise between the two spaces and help reinforce physical activity within the home. In the scientific journal Influences of Building Design and Site Design on Physical Activity it is mentioned that an additional two minutes of stair use per day will result in weight loose, of about 1.2 pounds per
year, which is more than the average gained by the average American. Also, within each apartment there is an area and storage cabinet set apart for an individual to work out.

Typical Apartments (8) 4 bedroom 2 bathroom Capacity 4-8 people
Multi-generational Apt. (3) 7 bedroom 4 bathroom
Capacity 7-14 people
Fitness Center & rental office space
The apartments are simplistic in nature, by focusing the living functions (kitchen, living room, and family room) to the southwest there was a possibility to optimize daylighting. Then all bedrooms stack to the northeast and overlook the street, with the
service functions (stairs, bathrooms, plumbing stacks, and structure) in the center.

The Economic Assistance Center was designed to enhance the cross ventilation through the building; by depressing the height of the restrooms and allowing ventilation to pass from the stair core to the offices behind.
The Economic Assistance Center is located in San Francisco’s SOMA (South of Market Street) District. This district was once an industrial area but it is revitalizing towards a mixed-use residential area.

26The Kansas City Crossroads area is just South of Downtown and the Power and Light District, which is a thriving area including many amenities to attract people. The Crossroads was once an industrial area but in the last few years has started to transform into a mixed-use residential
and up and coming boutique commercial area. The Kansas City Modern Furniture Gallery is designed on two major streets in the area, one leading towards downtown and the other intersecting the Crossroads district.

The main idea behind the Konza Prairie Winery is the natural connection the winery possesses to the landscape and how it transforms from a natural element, a grape, to a bottle of wine. The design of the winery is reflective of this connection; with the grapes fermenting in an
underground limestone ‘cave’, the natural stone of Kansas. To further enforce the transformation from grape to wine the visitors are thrust over the landscape and encased in a glass, steel, and concrete structure to represent how different wine is from grapes and how it is
almost separate from the landscape; however the winery is still tied together though a limestone datum connecting the tasting room and grape fermenting to the aging areas.

The Poet’s Retreat house was developed from the most reoccurring form in nature, the golden rectangle. This shape was overlapped on the site from opposite corners for the ability to create different geometries; these geometries would later become the built and natural forms of the
house, the paving pattern, patio awnings, pool, lawn terracing, and hedging. By repeating the geometries it reinforces the shapes used for the design of the house and surrounding landscape.

The College of Architecture at Kansas State was commissioned by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety to design and produce evacuation maps for the entire campus, including all entrances and classrooms. Through this venture I was hired to produce the design, which includes colors, symbols, legend placement, size, and placard location at specific entrances.
