It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the Fifteenth International Water Technology Conference. This conference has already established itself as a key event in which the most influential researchers in the different Water-related fields and regulators from related governmental bodies and firms can come together to exchange insights and to influence each others' agendas.
Such a dialogue has never been more important. We live in a world in which water resources are being depleted rapidly and in an increasingly threatening form. Over the past few years, the problem is manifested in the shortage, contamination of available water resources and incompatible reuse of wastewater resources.
The value of this conference lies in the opportunity it provides for an in-depth dialogue between regulators and the industry. It will provide opportunities for water quality professionals engaged in research, extension, and education to share knowledge and ideas, to identify and update emerging issues, and to network with related partner organizations.
I would like to see much more of this kind of collaboration. This is an opportunity for us all to come up with a sufficient vision of our current needs and future demand of water management technologies in the Arab region and the world. It is our work which will ultimately impact regulated firms. So, it is your chance to influence, please seize the opportunity to the full.
I would like to extend my warmest regards to every guest, participant, and observer joining our conference; hoping that it will be successful and fruitful.
On behalf of the International Water Technology Association members, I would like to acknowledge the encouragement and support received from His royal Highness, Crown Prince Sultan Ben Abdulaziz; His royal support has assured the continuity of Association activities.
Dear gratitude for conference sponsors; the respected ministers for their auspices and support for the organization of this conference.
Prof. Magdy Abou Rayan

Objectives
The CLIMB workshop invites local, regional and national stakeholders (from municipalities to industries) and policy bodies involved in the water sector to express their research needs and recommendations with regard to climate change impacts and adaptation in the Nile Delta. This event, the first of its kind in a scheduled series of workshops, is meant to initiate a sound and meaningful dissemination process for the scientific findings of the EU-funded CLIMB project, developed in accord with the stakeholder community. It is intended to endorse the expansion of networks and collaboration between scientists and the stakeholder

community to reinforce the development of sustainable water management mechanisms under the projected challenging climate change conditions.
The conduction of this workshop in the framework of the IWTC offers great opportunities to raise awareness and interest among water practitioners for the perspectives of climate change impacts on water resources in the Nile Delta, to foster trans-disciplinary discussion and to establish an enduring dialogue between scientists and stakeholders. Background
Climate change research for the Mediterranean region is showing large scientific consensus that climate change is impacting the area in a manifold and distinct fashion. Recently observed trends and projections from climate model ensembles indicate a strong susceptibility to changes in the hydrological regimes, an increasing general shortage of water resources and consequent threats to water availability and management. Such threats are resulting from decreasing groundwater resources, strongly increasing drought risk or flash floods, advancing sea-level rise, and their impact on key strategic sectors of regional economies with consequent macroeconomic and social implications. It shows that the magnitude of change contains a strong capacity to aggravate tensions that may lead into conflict among different socio-economic actors. However, it must be clearly stated that current uncertainties in climate projections and subsequent (hydrological) model chains, a yet incomplete understanding of the impact of a climate change signal on (micro- and macro-) economic mechanisms or the lack of an elaborate and integrated human security conceptual framework are imposing strong limitations on water-related decision-making under conditions of climate change. This is particularly true due to the general lack of regional data and the yet unresolved mismatch of spatial and temporal scales of operation from different scientific perspectives. Very little knowledge is available about the quantification of these changes, which is hampered by a lack of suitable and cost effective hydrological monitoring and modeling systems. In particular, current projections of future hydrological change, based on regional climate model results and subsequent hydrological modeling schemes, are very uncertain and poorly validated. In the Nile Delta, rising sea levels, and adjunct coastal erosion and flooding, impose a remarkable threat to water resources and security, especially near important coastal aquifers, which are endangered by salt water intrusion and thus enduring contamination. This is particularly true where the effects of eustatic sea level rise mix with strong near-coastal subsidence due to anthropogenic activity, where extensive withdrawal of groundwater (and other resources), diminishing river sedimentation and natural isostatic causes give reason to expect pronounced and harmful impacts on coastal and deltaic water resources and the population. It must be assumed that water quality will deteriorate due to higher water temperatures and changes in extremes, including floods and droughts. These developments are projected to have negative impacts on ecosystems and human health, water system reliability and operating costs, food availability, water access and utilisation as well as the operation of water infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, which are of greatest importance in the Nile Delta to sustain the regions agricultural productivity. The conditions required to develop and implement appropriate adaptation strategies are still lacking and must be overcome rapidly. This can only be realized in close cooperation between scientists and the stakeholder community.

The CLIMB project
In its 4-year design, the EU-project CLIMB (FP7-ENV-2009-1, www.climb-fp7.eu), a network of excellence comprising 19 partners from 9 countries (Germany, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, France, Italy, Austria, Palest. Adm. Areas, Canada), analyzes ongoing and future climate induced changes in hydrological budgets and extremes across the Mediterranean and neighboring regions. The work plan is targeted to selected river or aquifer catchments (e.g. the Nile Delta), where the consortium employs a combination of novel field monitoring and remote sensing concepts, data assimilation, integrated hydrologic modeling and socioeconomic factor analyses to reduce existing uncertainties in climate change impact analysis. Advanced climate scenario analysis is utilized and available ensembles of regional climate model simulations are audited and downscaled. This process provides the drivers for an ensemble of hydrological models with different degrees of complexity in terms of process description and level of integration. The results of hydrological modeling and socio-economic factor analysis are applied for the development of a GIS-based Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Tool, serving as a platform for dissemination of project results, including communication and planning for local and regional stakeholders. An important output of the research in the individual study sites will be the development of recommendations for an improved monitoring and modeling strategy for climate change impact assessment. These shall be presented and discussed during the workshop.

lexandria, the largest port in Egypt and one of the major summer resorts on the Mediterranean sea and lies in the North West of the Nile Delta 225 km from Cairo. Two deep-Water Harbors make it one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean and it is the center of the Egyptian fishing and Cotton Industries.
It is outstanding location. All Year round mild climate fine sandy beaches stretching over 40 km.
Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, who ordered the foundation of the city in 332 B.C on the site of a small village, called Rakoda in order to connect Egypt with his fatherland. He charged his architect Democrats with the planning of the new city immortalized his name along history.
After the death of Alexander the Great, his general Ptolemy declared himself King of Egypt and founded the ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt for three centuries. During this period, Alexandria was the capital of Egypt for nearly a thousand years. Few cities in the world can vie with its glorious past but the majority certainly has more to show. Virtually nothing remains of the marble places and temples for which the city was renowned antiquity. The Hellenic past has been completely submerged and today the city’s aspect is entirely modern. The sea front with its railings and open-ended squares is reminiscent, although many of the buildings away from the front retain an Egyptian integrity, it is not coincidental that many of the European communities choose Alexandria for their residences.
Climate In May, mean temperature has a minimum of 18C, and a maximum of 26C.
Hotel Palestine has a private beach and water temperature is reasonable for sea bathes. In the area, there is a water sports club, including sailing, launching and diving.
Historical Brief of Alexandria Alexandria is a city to explore at random, it’s as important to enjoy the atmosphere, as it is to see the “sights”. The city center now stretches back from Midan Saad Zaghloul, on the seafront, where there is a statue of the nationalist leader. This was formerly the site of the Caesareum, a magnificent temple begun by Cleopatra for her lover Antony and subsequently completed by their enemy Octavian and dedicated to himself. Two famous obelisks (one, known as “Cleopatra’s Needle”, now on the Embankment in London, the other in New York’s Central Park) were once here but all traces of the temple have disappeared.
Graeco - Roman Alexandria Little of the greatest city of antiquity remains to be seen today - although the
Alexandria Library is rebuilt..

The Roman Theatre Over 30 years of excavation have uncovered many Roman remains including
this well-preserved theatre with marble seats for up to 800 spectators, galleries and sections of mosaic-flooring. In Ptolemaic times this area was the Park of Pan, a pleasure garden surrounded by Roman villas and baths.
The Civilization Museum The collection, which covers the period from the 3rd century BC to the 7th
century AD, is a fascinating record of a civilization in the process of change as religions merged and society evolved. In Alexandria, Graeco - Roman and Pharaonic religions mingled in the cult of Serapis; the shift from pagan religions to Christianity can also be seen in the exhibits which include mummies, Hellenistic statues, busts of Roman emperors, Tanagra figurines and early Christian antiquities.
Islamic Alexandria El-Gomruk and El-Anfushi are interesting neighborhoods to explore, for their
souks and street life as well as Ottoman mosques and mashrabiya - decorated houses. The Mosque of Abu El-Abbas-Mursi, dedicated to the patron saint of Alexandria’s fishermen and sailors, this is the city’s biggest mosque.
Fort Qaitbey On the northern tip of the Eastern Harbor, sultan Qaitbey’s Fort is an
Alexandria landmark. The Fort is on the original site of Pharos, Alexandria’s ancient lighthouse, built in 279 BC to a height of 125 meters and topped with a statue of Poseidon. Although Pharos were restored at various times it had finally crumbled by the time that the original Fort was built here, in the 1480s. Today, the Fort contains a mosque and the Naval Museum and provides wonderful views of the city and the Mediterranean.
Montazah Palace and Gardens Acres of formal gardens and a beautiful beach make Montazah the foremost
city pleasure grounds. Montazah Palace, a grand structure built in a mixture of Turkish and Florentine styles, is now a state guesthouse. Pleasant afternoons can also be spent in Shallalat Gardens, include rockeries and an artificial pond, Nouzha Gardens, near Alexandria Zoo, and Antoniadis Gardens, where classical statuary is set among what were once the grounds of a Greek family.
Travel to Egypt You will need to contact your nearest Egyptian Consulate to obtain a visa. The
letter sent by organizing committee indicating the acceptance of your paper can used for this purpose.
Most airlines fly to Cairo and some fly directly to Alexandria, such as Lufthansa, Olympic (Greek Airways), British Airways. Egypt Air is the official carrier of the conference.

Travel to Alexandria There are 2 daily domestic flights leaving Cairo airport for Alexandria at 8 a.m.
and 5 p.m., however it is much cheaper and more interesting to travel by land to Alexandria.
Most international flights arrive in Cairo in the evening, which may be too late for public transport to Alexandria. It may be necessary to stay overnight in Cairo and travel to Alexandria the following day. There are several hotels close to the airport and many in downtown Cairo.
Trains depart for Alexandria from the main railway station in Ramses Square in downtown Cairo. Departures are hourly from 6 am to 10 p.m. and cost about US$ 10 per person. The nearest station to Hotel Palestine is Sidi Gaber, which is the penultimate stop before the main station in Alexandria. For the non-stop express trains to Alexandria, Sidi Gaber is the first stop. The journey takes about 2h 30m. You will need to take a taxi to your hotel (about US$ 5).
Buses (Super Jet and West Delta) travel from Cairo airport to Alexandria hourly from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with one departure 1 a.m. The cost is about US$ 8 and the journey takes about 3 hours. The buses also depart from downtown Cairo.
There are also limousines, which can be hired at the airport to go directly to Alexandria. The cost is about US$ 75.0
Also the IWTC travel service [rovides attendance and transportation service to the conference site.
Currency Exchange Banks opening hours are 08:30 to 13:30, Sunday to Thursday. Most hotels and
exchange offices are open for more extended periods.
You can change foreign currency into local currency at the airport. One US dollar is about 5.92 Egyptian pounds. There are no restrictions on exchange of foreign currency in Egypt.
Major credit cards are widely accepted by most hotels, restaurants and shops. Traveler’s cheques may be refused in some places and it is best therefore to exchange them at a bank. Useful Phone Numbers
The international code for Egypt is 20, the code for Alexandria is (0)3, and (0)2 for Cairo.
