Who was Alexander the

Great?*Born on July 20th (356 BC) in Pella.

* Son of Phillip II who was the King of Macedon.

*When he was thirteen years old his father hired Aristotle to be his tutor. He learned things such as Greek medicine, philosophy, morals, religion, logic and art. All of these greatly impacted his future. Aristotle became his mentor.

• He then became the new King of Macedon and created one of the largest empires in history

• Known for his successful battles

His Conquests • *Invaded the Persian Empire in 334 B.C.

• *He reached Northern Syria where he battled King Darius III and his Persian army. Darius fled and was eventually killed. Alexander then began his take over and became king of Persia.

• *He invaded Egypt and claimed the city of Alexandria

Conquests Cont.…• Alexander wanted to take over the Nanda and

Magadha Empires of Bengal. His troops were exhausted from their travels and didn’t feel they were equipped to battle against the powerful Indian armies. They stopped at the Hyphasis river and refused to go any further.

The Fall of Alexander the Great

• Alexander died at age 32 on June 11th 323 BC.• The story of his death varies but it was documented

that a few weeks before his death he was spotted binge drinking which caused him to develop a fever. His health grew worse over the following weeks and his soldiers found him dead.

• Civil war broke out following his death which broke apart his Empire.

• The influences of the Greek culture remained in the East. It was called “Hellenistic” culture. It was the influence of Greek language, culture and population.
