DESCRIPTION Oxigen’s master plan for Kingston Foreshores defines the public realm as a contemporary, post-industrial place that makes the most of its location on the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.

The master plan for the public realm works in conjunction with development controls (also by Oxigen) for adjacent residential and commercial development - the two work together to achieve a unified and visionary new urban precinct for Canberra.

Oxigen were engaged to prepare the Kingston Foreshore public realm master plan, detailed designs and documentation for tender and then superintendence of the construction.

The majority of the works are now complete, of which Canberra has actively embraced.

Second CreekCommencing in the Adelaide foothills, Second Creek is one of four creeks which travel through the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters. Traversing through Dunstone Grove - Linde Reserve, it continues under Payneham Road, along St Peters Street and then flows into the River Torrens, which then flows into the Gulf of St Vincent, at Henley Beach South.

During the redevelopment of Dunstone Grove - Linde Reserve, a water pool was created in the creek to enable water to be collected as part of the stormwater harvesting process. It is estimated that the annual quantity of water collected from this scheme will represent only 2% of the total Second Creek annual flow.

A

Preliminary Treatment / CleaningWater is collected through a small grilled inlet in the creek and then flows into a pump chamber. At this point, the quality of the water is automatically tested to ensure that it is suitable for use in this system. If suitable, the water will then be improved by two screening processes to remove gross pollutants and reduce fine particles.

B

Bio-filtrationBio-filtration is a water treatment process which cleanses stormwater of pollutants and organic matter, by running the water through a system of plants, varying soil profiles and microbes. This natural filtration environment, filters out and absorbs the pollutants. Once the water has passed through the system, it is almost to a level which is suitable for aquifer injection.

The Bio-filtration area visually appears as a landscaped plant bed and requires little maintenance once established. Crucial to the operation of the Bio-filtration system, is the quality, quantity and variety of plants within it.

C

TestingCleansed water from the Bio-filtration system then flows into a collection chamber where it is automatically tested to ensure its quality is suitable for aquifer injection. This testing ensures that the pH, conductivity, turbidity, temperature and redox potential of the water, is within target limits.

If acceptable, the water then passes through a final two screening processes to ensure that it is suitable for injection. This occurs namely through a mechanical screen and an ultra violet light filter.

D

StorageAt this part of the process, the water has been cleaned to a prescribed extent and all micro-organisms (ie bacteria, viruses, etc) have been removed. This water is now suitable for storage and later reuse in the irrigation of other public open spaces and gardens within the City. The water is then pumped and stored in a 200,000 litre underground tank and when full, it is injected into a natural bedrock aquifer below the ground.

The role of the bedrock aquifer is to act as a natural underground storage tank. Water is forced under pressure into existing fractures within the bedrock below the ground.

At this site, the bedrock commences at 90m below the ground with fractures occurring at 111m, 132m, 138m & 156m. The total depth of the bore at Linde Reserve is 168m below natural ground.

E

This stormwater harvesting and reuse system will be able to produce nine million litres of water each year, which is the equivalent to almost four Olympic sized swimming pools.

Seven million litres of the captured stormwater will be used to irrigate Dunstone Grove and Linde Reserve each year, as well as the new Community Garden. The remaining water has been earmarked for other nearby reserves in the City, as a future extension to this scheme.

Benefits of Bio-filtration in Stormwater Harvesting & Reuse:•Enables stormwater to be cleaned without the use of a traditional wetland

•Has a small footprint in comparison to a wetland

•Ease of ongoing maintenance of bio-filtration system

•Provides amenity Benefits of Stormwater Harvesting & Reuse

•Reduced reliance on potable water

•Enables irrigated public open space in reserves to be maintained to the desired standard by removing the influence of water restrictions

Average design rainfall capturedThe rain gardens treat up to an approximate 3 month average recurrence interval rainfall event. Stormwater runoff from the footpaths and carpark will enter the rain gardens, where it will be filtered through plants and soil, where it will undergo treatment by a natural biological process. This process will reduce the pollutant content in stormwater. This runoff from footpaths provides a sustainable source of water to trees and plants - maintaining a green streetscape.

Quantity of water treated each yearThe bio-swales will treat on average up to 90% of the annual runoff from the localised street and civic plaza catchment, which includes the buildings, roadways, and footpaths that will drain into the kerb and gutter. The bio-swale also enables plants and trees within it to receive valuable additional water.

Recycled water that is captured and treated from the Linde Reserve stormwater harvesting scheme is reticulated through a pipeline to include the civic plaza precinct. This scheme provides a sustainable non potable water supply to gardens, street trees, water features, reserves and the St Peters Town Hall complex.

The twin underground culverts remain in place and continue down St Peters Street. Filtered and excess stormwater is directed into the culvert and carried onto the River Torrens and ultimately the Ocean.

DESCRIPTION The importance of streets and civic spaces to the function and image of the city cannot be underestimated. The city’s public realm provides the most visible representation of the health of the city, a place for communication and celebration of community attitudes and values. The St Peters Street Precinct is an exemplary project that signifies St Peters Council’s commitment to delivering vibrant public realm projects that enhance the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the city.

The St Peters Street Precinct is a high quality civic project, combining a central community focused town hall complex with a civic plaza and Avenue of Honour. The redeveloped precinct provides an outstanding model for mixed-use community spaces. The finished project seamlessly integrates the existing heritage with a new vibrant shared civic space. This vision has established a unique precinct that has become a much loved part of the St Peters community and links the existing Dunstone Grove to the St Peters Billabong and Torrens Linear Trail.

AWARDS2015 AILA SA Landscape Architecture Planning Award

DESCRIPTIONRiverbank is approximately 380 hectares in area bound by North Terrace, Port Road, Park Terrace and War Memorial Drive/North Adelaide. The site houses some of South Australia’s most important social, cultural and economic assets.

The site has seen spasmodic and uncoordinated development since the Torrens Lake was built. Several plans have been undertaken for parts of the precinct, most focussing upon the central zone.

Our approach was built around the personal participation by key design team members throughout the development of the master plan. Consultation then extended to engagement with stakeholders.

The Riverbank master plan describes a place and strategy for realization that is world class. The master plan takes advantage of the existing qualities of the site and weaves this with a contemporary view of urban life. What will evolve is a place that is compelling, logical and implementable.

Studio

DESCRIPTIONThis new studio illustrates a ‘different’ way of crafting buildings in the city; one that values above all the existing streetscape and the importance of community. The form, openness to the street and use of raw materials captures the qualities of the street and neighbourhood in ways that are both new and surprising.

The building is clearly a modern intervention in the streetscape, yet it fits in comfortably, inspiring confidence in contemporary, innovative and sustainable architecture. The art of architecture and urban design, and the process of design and creativity, is overtly celebrated, not hidden.

The former concrete block warehouse is now an exemplar in sustainable architecture. Through smart materials’ choice, natural lighting, insulation and achieving cross ventilation energy consumption is minimised, almost eliminating the need for heating and cooling. In doing so, the building represents a confidence in a contextual, crafted and sustainable approach to redevelopment in the city.

DESCRIPTIONThe O’Bahn city project drives a crucial re-energising for the Adelaide’s East End and adjacent parklands. Whilst the focus is on delivery of the O’Bahn project in the most efficient and effective way, the potential urban design benefits of the project are considerable, including flow on effects that acknowledge the importance of the city’s East End to the city’s economy.

Urban design is approached at both the broad and detailed scales. At the broad scale, the route minimises impact on Hackney Road and the parklands, including minimal visual impact of the portals and road infrastructure. The alignment and extent of tunnels results in a well-balanced and considered approach to integration within the existing urban environment. At a detailed scale, much of the urban design success of the project will depend on the individual elements – colour, materials, handrails, canopies, minor service infrastructure, the tunnel service building, pathways, planting and proposals for Rundle Road.
