ALERT – An Overview

ALERT is a non profit organization that aims to spread awareness about wellness in the society. A first of

its kind in Chennai in very many aspects, it has been started by a group of young, spirited and service

minded professionals who share a vibe in terms of envisioning a society that is fully laden with

awareness along with compassion. As a first step towards this journey towards wellness, ALERT has

undertaken Golden Hour Care and Emergency Response management as its first and core project.

Through this project ALERT aims to train various sections of the society in emergency response. This

program is being taken to corporates, educational institutions and other social bodies. The end

beneficiary would be none other the common man in our society which includes you and me. It is our

aim to increase the sensitivity backed by knowledge to handle the situation with support from the man

at the vicinity, the medical, enforcement and the legal fraternity, when a life is in danger due to an

emergency. Our aim is to ensure that at least one member in each family to be trained in emergency

care. The mission is totally free from any commercial motive. ALERT functions with the only aim of

achieving a medically aware, socially conscious and a friendly society around us. The curriculum has

been jointly developed and approved by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Also, to know more

We have currently trained close to 20000 people but are on a constant endeavour to achieve the goal

that Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has given is i.e., - "Train atleast one in every family". The group has been

fortunate to have a patron in a visionary such as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

A Typical Workshop

This training programme aims to generate awareness and provide training in handling an emergency

situation. A typical session would last for about four hours with some dedicated time for hands on

experience. The topics that get addressed in the training session are as follows –

Inhibitions to render assistance during an emergency

Chain of Survival

Basic Life Support Principles.

ABC of basic life support

Common Medical Emergencies - Bleeding (external and internal), Fainting, Fractures, Seizures,

Choking, Burns, venomous stings and bites etc.

CPR – Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

A brief about the 108 ambulance service with its benefits and other emergency numbers

A live demonstration of the 108 ambulance (wherever possible)

The activities and milestones presented in this document are strictly between the period January 2012

to December 2012.

ALERT Milestones

Following are some of the significant milestones for ALERT achieved during the period Jan 2012 to Dec

2012

Conducted 55 workshops during this period.(Until November as this report is being

prepared. There is another one month to go)

The total number of people trained by ALERT has crossed 20,000 in 2012.

Invited by the State Transport department for the third consecutive year to be a part of and

conduct workshops at the RTO (Regional Transport Offices) as part of Road Safety Week

campaign.

ALERT was invited by the department of management studied (DOMS) to give a lecture on

social entrepreneurship to the management students which was received very well.

ALERT collaborated with the Disaster Management Committee (DMC) at IIT, Madras to

conduct training workshops for the management students.

ALERT commenced regular monthly workshops at IIT, madras which is also open to

registered members of ALERT who are from the general public.

ALERT has entered a new segment in training – Security force of G4S, the largest security

force provider. The security force strength is 40,000 and ALERT and G4S are putting together

a plan to train the security force that play a vital role in many buildings holding 1000’s of

people visiting like the business parks, technology parks, malls etc.

ALERT has made a beginning in the state of Karnataka by commencing workshops at IIITB –

Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore

ALERT has made some remarkable breakthroughs in the vision towards “Right to Emergency

care” by presenting the idea to some key people such as Dr Devishetty of Narayana

Hrudayalaya and Justice B Rajendran of the Madras high court.

Mr Venkat Changavalli, the former CEO of EMRI 108, joined ALERT as the member of the

strategic advisory board. An alumni of IIM-A, Mr Venkat was the mastermind for the

visualization and successful implementation of 108 ambulance services across 9 states in

India

ALERT has introduced a yearlong (25 hour) curriculum on Golden hour care and emergency

response for the first time in AMM Matriculation school. A one hour class is part of the

regular timetable of the 9th standard students every Friday.

The 6th year commemoration was uniquely celebrated by the ALERT trained volunteers.

The trained volunteers took on a field exercise in 108 ambulances in the city on Oct 2nd

2012 handling emergency cases. This brought great experiential learning to the trained

volunteers and 108 was very happy to find volunteers enthusiastically offering help where

they needed it.

ALERT was chosen as the NGO partner by 92.7BigFM for a month long campaign on road

safety that included on air shows and on the ground events that was jointl y delivered by

ALERT. The campaign ended with a safety run organized on the Marina beach in Chennai.

VITAL’12 – ALERT presented an awareness programme on Golden Hour Care titled Vital’12

which was held at the SAC auditorium, IIT madras. The programme was attended by about

450 people. The programme concluded with an open house Q and A with a panel of

representatives from the enforcement, medical and ambulance systems answering

questions raised on the audience.

ALERT was featured in a popular programme titled “Kazham Irangiyavargal” meaning

“People who have got on to the field” in a widely followed news channel by name “Pudhiya

Thalaimurai” meaning “the new generation”

ALERT found another popular voice to carry its message across to the people in actor

Madhavan, popularly known as ‘Maddy’. Actor Madhavan became an ambassador of ALERT

and messages of ALERT carried by Mr Madhavan are on air in a popular cinemas in chennai.

VITAL’12 was presented by ALERT in collaboration with DMC, IIT Madras, Rotaract and Chennai

Trekking Club. It was a 3 hour programme that was attended by about 450 people, predominantly

students. Issues pertaining to the inhibitions to offer help during an emergency were addressed and

was followed by introductions to concepts of Basic Life Support.

ALERT Celebrated its anniversary by handling Emergency cases in 108 Ambulances

What better way can a cause be lived than to engage in the very purpose of it. ALERT volunteers got on

to 108 ambulances on the 2nd of Oct 2012 to handle emergency cases in Chennai city. The experience

Plans in Immediate Future

VITAL’13.

The success of Vital’12 has made it a possibility to explore opportunities to spread awareness in a larger

scale and ALERT would plan for Vital’13 to reach out to larger audiences.

More workshops outside Chennai – A chapter in Bangalore

With more requests coming in from the city of Bangalore to conduct ALERT training sessions there,

ALERT would seriously consider to look beyond tamilnadu and set up a chapter in Bangalore to take the

initiative forward. There have been many such requests from cities such as Ahmedabad, Hyderabad,

Bombay etc.

Right to Emergency care

Meetings with key people such as Mr Devishetty of Narayana Hrudayala have shown us new directions

that ALERT needs to convert its vision of right to emergency care into a reality. Further meetings and

discussions would happen with the Indian Orthopedic Association to take the initiative forward.

Collaborations with similar NGO’s such as SAGA

ALERT plans to bring the synergies of working together for a larger effect and would collaborate with

organizations that share the vision such as SAGA in Chennai.

Design and Propose solutions for a better emergency care system

ALERT’s thinktank is constantly brainstorming on providing innovative solutions to improve the currently

delivery models of emergency care. ALERT envisages to propose some key initiatives in this regard and

the year 2013 is vital in its conceptualization, design and implementation.

Challenges

Funds – Sponsorships and funding continue to be a challenge. With pure passion to give back

something to the society fueling ALERT to do all the service it has done so far, ALERT is in

tremendous need for funds to effectively carry out programmes to reach large scale benefits to

the society.

Volunteers - Volunteer base needs to be strengthened even though the last year has seen a

good inflow of volunteers into the ALERT mission.

A TESTIMONIAL FROM A PARTICPANT OF VITAL’12

Here is an encounter that a few of the rotractors had faced on the road

by the marina beach and Chennai and karthik narrates what they saw

and what they did -

Karthik said – “There were a group of Rotractors in Marina last evening

and were about to cross the road, when they saw this rather nasty

accident where a speeding 2 wheeler lost control and moved on to the

right lane ( opp.side) and hit the oncoming car in the opposite

direction. The guy on the bike was thrown head on to the vehicle,

crashing the windshield and the helmet went flying (as he had not

buckled it up) and fell to ground...the 2 ladies in the pillion got thrown

out of the bike too. The family in the car, for no fault of theirs also got injured. The bike rider

apparently had glass pieces stuck to his face and was bleeding all over and a possible leg

fracture....

To cut the long story short, though the first few seconds we were shocked and dazed by the

scene, we immediately jumped into action, pulled the victims to a safe spot, administered first

aid while one of us held the fractured leg, ensuring he doesn’t move, called for the ambulance,

police, and started controlling the crowd that was blocking the entire traffic. We took charge to

re-direct the jammed vehicles, without which the ambulance would have never been able to

approach the spot. The ambulances came in about 15 minutes while the police came in after 20

minutes. We got appreciated by the police and ambulance personnel for the courageous act and

ownership.

Without that awareness program in IIT - Vital 12, we would have never been able to do it.

Though the Vital’12 programme was to generate awareness and not a full-fledged training, it

was good enough for us to do this...perhaps had we done a full fledged training; we would have

handled the situation even better!”

Karthik took the effort of calling back ALERT to report this with a great sense of gratitude and

wanted to get trained further.

“It was an eye opener” was how the volunteers, who were aboard the GVK EMRI 108 ambulance on Tuesday,described their experience. The dozen young volunteers, including some college students and IT professionals, had ahands-on experience of how an ambulance crew operates, and were completely in awe.

Rajesh Trivedi was waiting in the ambulance stationed in Ripon Building, when a call came from the EMRI controlroom instructing them to go to Park Station.

“A commuter had tripped and fallen when he tried to get into the train. Luckily, he fell into the train but sustainedmultiple fractures. Some college students called for help. They were agitated but the emergency technicians werecalm and collected as they fixed the splint and transported him to the hospital,” Mr. Trivedi said. “It is a perspectivechange when you watch something through the eye of ambulance,” he concluded.

The opportunity offered Chirag Jain, the head of a disaster management committee at Indian Institute ofTechnology -Madras, the first-hand experience he needed to understand how to tackle emergencies.

Many of the volunteers had thought that accidents and hospitals meant “paperwork” leading to delays in treatment.For Manoj, the ride in the ambulance offered a ringside view of people’s behaviour. “I realised that people do nottake ownership of the sick. They consider the ambulance just another transport vehicle,” he said.

The programme was organised by Alert, a non-governmental organisation formed on October 2, six years ago byKala Balasundaram.

“Volunteers can enable people to understand our work better,” said B. Prabhudoss, regional manager at EMRI, theorganisation that runs the 108 ambulances. “Our problem is that in casualty zones, the walking wounded get intothe ambulance while the unconscious are left behind. Bystanders who understand our work would be a great help asthey can not only manage crowds but also prevent vehicles haphazardly and allow us to do our work,” he said.

GVK EMRI’s chief operating officer B.N. Sridhar also participated in the programme.
