Second Quarter (April-May-June) 2019 Teresa’s Tid Bits…... Wow! I cant believe we are in the second quarter of 2019 already. Where has the time flown to? I want to take a moment to thank all of our outstanding volunteers, without you we would not be able to have such a strong youth development program. If you are interested in helping out just give us a shout at the extension office and we can get you on board. Please take a moment to read through this edition of our newsletter as we have more changes to prepare for. The biggest change this year is the fair entry dates. The deadline is two weeks earlier in the year, so we can be better prepared for the fair. Fair Entry will open on June 17 and will close on July 19. All entry fees for the fair will be due by July 19. These dates have been changed to help us (and our barn superintendents) to plan our layout for the fair. Dont forget to sign up for a Quality Assurance class if you are taking an animal to sell at the fair. Yes you will even need to take this class if you are only selling a rabbit. We would like to be excellent producers of a quality product for our end consumer! You will need to sign up on 4HOnline for the classes, just check the livestock section in this newsletter for more information. The Official Word

Idaho 4-H Policies and Procedures is the official publication for Idaho 4-H policies and procedures. It is revised and published biannually. The publication provides information on the vision and mission of Idaho 4-H and a variety of topics of interest to volunteer leaders. Topics include membership/age, 4-H code of conduct, use of the 4-H name and emblem, and liability coverage and grievance procedures. Copies are available at the Extension Office and on the Idaho 4-H web site.

Project Requirements

As you plan for next year, please remember that project requirements and exhibit standards are fully described in the Kootenai/Shoshone County 4-H Project Requirements - every Organizational Leader will receive a full copy and project leaders need to get requirements for the projects they are signed up to lead. These will also be posted on our Kootenai County Extension website (when it gets up and running) and at your 4-H Online family home page. Remember that our county project requirements are similar to the State level requirements, but there are slight variations that supersede the state version. There will be extra copies at the Extension Office or available electronically by request.

If all leaders, members, and parents review the project and exhibit requirements at the beginning of a project, then there shouldn’t be any problems when a project is submitted for exhibit at next year’s Fair. Remember - All projects have a record book or

portfolio! All record books include a story! All projects require a demonstration! All projects have an exhibit standard!

Trips t0 Take National 4-H

Dairy Conference

The United Dairymen of Idaho

sponsor 4-H Members to attend

the National Dairy Conference

every year. The conference is in

late September in Madison,

Wisconsin. Members must be

between 15 and 19 and have

excelled in either Dairy Cattle or

Dairy Foods for the last 3 years.

For complete eligibility

requirements and an application

form, contact the Extension

Office or visit the State 4-H web

site at www.uidaho.edu/4h.

National 4-H Congress

National 4-H Congress will be held in late November in

Atlanta, Georgia. This is a really great experience for

those members who have excelled in the 4-H program.

Congress includes workshops, cultural events,

community service projects, a fashion review, and

sightseeing. Idaho 4-H members who are 14-18 years

old as of January 1, 2019 and who have not previously

attended National 4-H Congress, will be selected to

attend. State and local donors provide partial support;

the State 4-H Program secures registration and lodging

funds. Delegates help pay a portion of their travel

expenses. Contact the Extension Office for more

information. Application are open through 4HOnline

from early April 1 to early June 10.

Continuing to Welcome New

4-H Members! Despite March 1st,

having come and gone, we are still

welcoming in new 4-H members. The

process for these members is having them

register and pay at the Extension Office. We

will provide them with a list of clubs and

have them reach out to the Organization

Leaders to see if the club is still accepting

members and if so, that the meeting times

and locations work for them. The only

difference between these member’s and

the members who were registered before

March 1st, is they aren’t able to compete at

the North Idaho State Fair as a 4-H member.

If the project they are completing has an

open class they will be able to compete in

NExA (Northwest Expedition Academy) will be joining our

4-H Family as their own club!

This will be an exciting new adventure for our 4-H program and all of the

new members and families.

This year we will have no club schedule to weigh in your pigs. Members are encouraged to come to the scale between 3-9 PM. Members with breeding stock at home will NOT have an early weigh in time. If you have a pig showing signs of any kind of sickness we ask that you contact the Extension Office prior to this event and plan to weigh in at the end of the weigh in time period.

Livestock Leaders The Livestock Leaders next scheduled

meeting is May 8 th at 7:00 PM. There will be a stock sale committee meeting at 6:30 PM.

Buying Animals and COOL As you purchase animals for your 2018-

2019 4-H projects, remember that you need to get documentation on where they were born and where they have been raised. We have a sample “Bill of Sale” form here at the Extension Office that you may want to use. Also remember that all cattle need brand inspections and that all animals crossing state lines need health certificates at the time of purchase. It is your responsibility to make sure you are in compliance with state and federal laws.

Club Fundraising Opportunity

Does your Club need a fundraiser idea?

Every Saturday from May until October, your 4-H club has

a chance to earn some $$$

The Kootenai County Farmers market is partnering up with

4-H to provide the farmers market shoppers assistance with

purchased goods through the “Kids With Carts” program.

Your club will spend a scheduled

Saturday from 8:45 AM –2:00 PM at the

farmers market located at Prairie and

Hwy 95 providing a cart service to

shoppers. Your club will provide excellent

customer service to shoppers and get to

keep all the tips earned during the day.

Your obligation will be to provide a minimum of one adult to

be in charge for the day and three 4-H members to operate the

carts.

This is a great way to provide a service to our community,

share about our 4-H program, and make a few bucks for your

club! Please contact Teresa to schedule a Saturday for your

club to be involved!
