The semester is almost over, and so is 2018! Fi- nals and the end of the semester are right around the corner. While the year seemed to fly by, there have been so many important events and changes, some of which we’ve most likely already forgotten. In 2018, we saw the end of net neutrality, Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal and the Fortnite takeover. France won the FIFA World Cup and Norway took home the most Olympic medals from PyeongChang. We flossed on the dancefloor and argued over whether we heard “Yanny” or “Laurel.” Thanks to this year’s 80s fashion trends, our closets most likely contain at least one plaid thing and even people with short hair know what a scrunchie is. It was a great year for movies, too, with the release of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, Love, Simon and the long-awaited Incredibles 2. Notable albums such as Astroworld, Culture II, Beerbongs and Bentleys, sweetener, and Suncity blessed our ears and kept us motivated through all of our schoolwork. We now have not one, not two, but THREE new Kardashians to keep up with. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, and Cardi B and Offset (who also had a baby girl, Kulture) may have called off their re- spective marriages and engagements, but the marriages of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin make it all better again. 2018 was a good year, and also one we can grow from. Through all of the ups and downs, successes like the banning of plastic straws and utensils in Seattle and student interest in this year’s elections should leave us looking to forward to what we can accomplish in 2019! ALD & PES spotlight By: Jennifer Attanasio On November 4, 2018, dozens of students were inducted into the University of Maryland chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. Among this diverse, talented and intelligent group of students are a select group who were honored with our New Member Scholarship Award. One of our Fall 2018 winners is Amelia Huppert, a sophomore double majoring in Economics and English. She is a peer mentor for the university’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and a writing tutor who enjoys reading and skiing in her spare time. Huppert said winning the award was very exciting and meaningful. She elaborated to say that, “I think [winning the scholarship] impacted me and sort of reinforced that the work that I’m doing here and the passion that I’m putting into learning is paying off, and it’s contributing to the community around me…it’s just really rewarding.” Sophomore mechanical engineering student Andrew “A.J.” Shannon was also honored with the New Member Scholarship this Fall 2018 semester. Shannon is a member of Terps Racing and Terp Thon. In addition, he plays intramural soccer, football, and basketball. He said he feels excited to be one of this semester’s winners, especially given the talents of fellow inductees: “I’m proud of the fact that out of all those people, who have impressive accomplishments and everything, that I was chosen. I kind of feel honored and proud of that,” he said. On behalf of the University of Maryland’s Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma chapters, congratulations to our New Member Scholarship Award winners and all of our fall inductees!

Slippers: A nice cozy pair of slippers is always a good idea! These $120 UGG slippers are comfy, soft and wa-ter-resistant. Your dad can do his work from home while wearing these fuzzy shoes.

Winter coat: The cold weather is starting to set in, so you might want to consider giving your mom a luxurious winter coat. This is a perfect gift if you live in a northern state because the parka was designed to keep you warm, even if it’s -20 degrees outside! This is one of the pricier items on the list, coming in at $378.

Top Three Charities to Consider This Holiday Season! By: Maya Pillai

Toys for Tots!Want to gift a toy to a child in need this holiday season? Toys for Tots makes this process simple, as this organization collects new, unwrapped toys in collection box-es at the drop off locations of designated businesses (i.e. Build-A-Bear Workshop in the Mall in Columbia) starting in October until mid-December. Toys are later picked up by coordinators and sorted by age range in designated warehouses. As Christmas nears, social welfare agencies, with the help of the coordinators, distribute the toys to children in the local communities.

How can you donate?More information on donating at a location near you can be found here: https://www.toysfortots.org/locate/default.aspx?nType=1. Simply enter your zip code and click search to be redirected to a local campaign website for further instruc-tions.

Make-A-Wish Foundation!Looking for ways to help children with life-threatening medi-cal conditions? Consider donating to the Make-A-Wish foun-dation this December! A child makes a wish every 34 min-utes online. This non-profit organization partners with several companies to make children’s wishes become a reality.

How can you donate?Consider dropping a letter to Santa at Macy’s from November 2nd to December 24th! For every letter, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for up to $1 million. Furthermore, you can help by buying gifts that “give back” at participating locations. When you buy a gift for a loved one, the Make-A-Wish foundation will receive a por-tion of the proceeds from the transaction. It is ultimately a win-win situation for everyone!

Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign! The Red Kettle Campaign is responsible for about one-third of yearly dona-tions to the Salvation Army. Volunteers stand outside retail stores with red kettles to collect donations throughout the country. Donations as small as a dollar can help the Salvation Army provide toys, clothes and food to families across the nation during this holiday season. How can you donate? The most direct way to donate is by visiting give.SalvationArmyUSA.org. Additionally, you can drop off money into thousands of red kettles all across America at participating businesses such as Walmart. Furthermore, you can donate by using Amazon Alexa. Simply state “Alexa, donate to The Salva-tion Army,” and then specify the amount you wish to donate. Finally, donations can be sent by texting “KETTLES” to 91999.

Happy donating! 4

This year is coming to a close, and though we still have to get through the holidays, you may already be look-ing ahead to 2019. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to implement changes in your life that you always wanted to accomplish but kept pushing off until tomorrow. Yet, many find setting New Year’s resolutions much easier than actual-ly accomplishing them. According to Business Insider, about 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. The likelihood of successfully accomplishing a resolution is so low that peo-ple joke about mottos like “new year, new me” online ev-ery year. A 2017 YouGov poll found that almost one-third of participants surveyed reported they wouldn’t be making New Year’s resolutions. Many people feel that forming res-olutions is pointless because they’re so likely to end in fail-ure. Florence Ning, a sophomore at the University of Maryland, shared a similar sentiment about New Year’s res-olutions. She used to make resolutions when she was young-er, but Ning isn’t planning on setting any this year. “I think people our age have lost hope now,” Ning said. “I feel like, as you get older, you realize how hard it is to really just say - on one day, because it’s a tradition - ‘I’m going to do this,’ when, in reality, you don’t actually do it.”Does this mean all New Year’s resolutions are doomed to end in failure? Sophomore Sandra Roper doesn’t think so. Roper often sets goals for herself that she wants to accom-plish in the new year. Her goal for 2019: to run a half-mar-athon in May. “I think that challenges are what help people grow,”-said Roper. “People see something they want to do or a habit

they want to change, and a new year or a turning point is a good place to start… I think the issue comes when it’s more like talk and people aren’t actually invested in it.” Lack of investment and planning are some of the main reasons New Year’s resolutions fail. According to The New York Times, one way to form resolutions that will ac-tually last is to set S.M.A.R.T. goals:

Specific. Your resolution shouldn’t be vague - it should be concrete. If you want to start running, don’t just say, “I’m going to start running.” Instead, say, “I want to be able to run one mile in 10 minutes within the next month.”Measurable. Your resolution should be something that you can track. Tracking your progress in a journal or on your phone will remind you that you are accomplishing some-thing, even if it doesn’t always seem like you are.Achievable. Set realistic goals. If the goal you have in mind is big, take baby steps to achieve it. Visualize the ultimate goal you want to accomplish and write out the steps you’ll need to do first to get there.Relevant. A resolution should be something that you actu-ally care about! Ask yourself: Is this something I want to do for myself or because others are pressuring me to do it? Is this something I’m going to care about in the next few months or just a passing fad?Time-bound. Set time parameters for each of the steps you need to accomplish along the way. Don’t rush things! Give yourself enough time to complete the goal.

The most important thing is that you don’t give up on your resolution, despite slip-ups throughout the year. Even if you make mistakes, remember that your goal is still achievable if you stick to it.

1. Go see the Zoo Lights in Washington, D.C.! In Decem-ber, they have animated light shows, live music and, of course, the animals! Plus, it’s absolutely free. Grab some friends and enjoy the holiday spirit while it lasts!

2. Wanna travel to a big city? Head to New York! There’s so much to do that everyone can find something to make them smile. During the winter months, I like to go ice skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center and see the big Christmas tree. Feeling extra bold? Maybe con-sider going for New Year’s Eve!

3. head to the Whitetail Ski Resort in Pennsylvania! I personally would fall flat on my face if I tried to ski, but

this is the time of year to go. I’ve heard many good things about Whitetail Ski Resort in Pennsylvania - they have a variety of different events and slopes for all experience levels, plus a large lodge to take a break from the cold. Take a day trip and get your shred on!

4. Another gem of Pennsylvania is Hershey Park, not too far of a drive from us! They have their Christmas Candyland going on until January 1 - you can check out the holiday rides and coasters, festive lights and enter-tainment. But, even when the holidays are over, a trip to Hershey is always fun! Stay in the lodge or just go for a day to satisfy your sweet tooth.
