People begin to drink more or use more drugs because they physically are able to use more and because their high tolerance demands more to get the desired effect. Because they use more, their tolerance continues to go up.

BLACKOUTSBLACKOUTS
Blackouts do not mean passing out. A blackout is a period of alcohol-induced amnesia.
Blackouts typically happen at high blood alcohol levels.
Blackouts do not always mean alcoholism is present; however, it is usually an indication of high tolerance and means that the person may be near his or her trigger level.
