INFORMATION ON ALCOHOL

Alcohol is an organic compound in the –OH which means it is in the hydroxyl functional group. There is other type of alcohol, ethanol alcohol, which is the beverage alcohol. The other types of alcohols are: propanol, glycerol, methanol, and butyl. Alcohol is used in many different ways. But I think in most cases, the most common thing when people hear the word “alcohol” they think of the beverage and not the other chemistry types of alcohol.

Ethanol Alcohol

Ethanol alcohol is a volatile, which mean to be vaporized, flammable, colorless liquid. Besides being used for drinking, ethanol is used in thermometers, used as a solvent, and used as a fuel. The formula for ethanol is CH3CH2OH. Ethanol’s is abbreviated as EtOH. Ethanol has been in the world for a long time. But ethanol can be deadly. How? If ethanol is ingested in the human body past the drinking limit, and I mean way past the drinking limit, your body cells will start the break down and later you will die.

Methanol Alcohol

Methanol alcohol is a flammable, volatile, colorless liquid, but has a quite distinctive odor that is quite similar to, but sweeter than, ethanol alcohol. Methanol, at room temperature, is a polar liquid. Methanol is used as a antifreeze, a solvent, a fuel, and as a denaturant for ethanol alcohol. Methanol was used way back then when the ancient Egyptians used mixed substances, including methanol, before they mummified people. But pure alcohol was first discovered in 1661 by Robert Boyle. Methanol was first determined it as a element in 1834 by French chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas and Eugene Peligot. Methanol’s molecular formula is CH4O

Propanol

Propanol is a colorless and smells similar to ethanol. Propanol is a quite common used solvent in almost everything from printer ink to cosmetics. Propanol also is used in the production of raw materials such as amphetamines, which is a drug that helps you stay awake and focus, but most people refer to it as “speed”. Propanol’s molecular formula is C3H8O

Glycerol

Glycerol is a polyol compound, which means that glycerol is contains two or more hydroxyl groups in it. Glycerol is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is used in pharmaceutical formulations, which mean that a chemical substances, including the active drug, are combined to make medicine. Glycerol has three hydroxyl groups. Instead of being used for medicine, glycerol is also used in food products. An example is ice cream.

Butanol, or Butyl Alcohol

Butyl alcohol is a flammable, clear liquid. It is also volatile with a very strong alcoholic odor. Butyl is used as a solvent for paints and for producing products such as safety glass and brake fluids. Butanol is also a four carbon structure. The molecular formula is C4H9OH. Butanol is toxic but is considered safe enough to use in cosmetics.

Good Things About Alcohol

Alcohol has its goods and bad parts about it. Some good things about it, it has be proclaimed to lower the risk of a heart attack. Alcohol, rubbing alcohol, is a good type of alcohol for when you get a cut, you would most likely put rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and treat the infection before risking the cut to get infected. Alcohol isn’t just the drinking type, it has many other stuff to it.

Bad Things About Alcohol

The bad things about alcohol is, well alcohol to certain people might seem like a “stress reliever” when somebody is feeling blue, but when you consume way too much alcohol your body functions stop working and eventually you will die. Police try to prevent people from that by making sure you do not consume more than 0.08% of alcohol or you will then become intoxicated.
