FEATURE DESCRIPTION

As part of the 3GPP standards, specifications for UMTS Home NodeBs (HNB) are developed.

These include reference network architecture which define an interface between the HNBs

and a Home NodeB Gateway (HNB-GW), called Iuh interface. The Iuh protocols defined by

3GPP are the RANAP User Adaptation (RUA) and Home NodeB Application Part (HNBAP). The

primary function of RUA is to support the UTRAN functions in the HNB which require RANAP.

HNBAP is used for the control signaling between the HNB and HNB-GW.

The purpose of this feature is for the Small Cell Gateway (or HNB GW) to support the Iuh

interface, aligned with Release 10 standards.

Only existing functionality already supported over Iu’ and which is standardized in 3GPP

specifications (up to Rel 10) are supported by the ALU HNB-GW over Iuh.

FEATURE BENEFITS

This feature provides readiness for interworking between the ALU HNB-GW and a 3rd party

CPE via Iuh interface complying with 3GPP R10 specifications, supporting standard features.

At the same time, the feature also ensures back compatibility, allowing the HNB-GW to

continue to support those ALU HNBs via existing interface (Iu’) and supporting added value

features.

RESTRICTION/LIMITATION

Listed below the Restrictions/Limitations of this feature:

This feature impacts the HNB-GW only.

This feature does not deal with OAM integration.

The HNB-GW shall operate either in Iuh or Iu’ mode at a time.

CSG is not supported. The HNB-GW will handle CSG UEs and CSG HNBs in the

same way as non-CSG UEs and non-CSG HNBs.

Only F2F Handover using Iurh interface will be supported. F2F HO using

relocation procedure via Iuh interface will not be supported.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Counters

A set of Iuh related counters are implemented in the SCGW to provide useful

information on the Iuh related procedures. These are focussed mainly on HNBAP as

this protocol provides the most useful information about the Iuh procedures
