ALCA MIDWEST CHAPTER NEWSLETTER FORMERLY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL GERIATRIC CARE MANAGERS
When asked to put together
an article on networking for
this newsletter, I pondered,
“Why ask me? I am basically
an introvert and not the best
at networking.”
I agreed to give it a shot and
started out searching the
internet for ideas. Of course,
I came up with “social networking”
and the use of media and
technology. I am just an old-
fashioned girl who uses technology
as needed but I still relish my flip
phone and don’t “get” Facebook.
I have entered into the world of
LinkedIn, but don’t quite know how
to use it for the greater good. I will
agree that social networking is a
great thing and I am putting it on my
agenda for the future.
For now, I am diving into this article
on “business networking” or meet-
ing individuals face-to-face who,
through trust and relationship
building, become walking, talking
advertisements for one another.
One-on-one networking is an
inexpensive and highly effective
way to market our services, our
companies and our organizations.
With that in mind, here are some tips
for successful networking.
1. Keep in mind that networking is
about being genuine and
authentic. You are in Care
Management because you love it,
and not because you want to
push someone else into your
belief system.
2. Think about your “goals” in
attending “networking
meetings”. Pick your formal
networking opportunities to
appropriately meet your needs.
A word of caution - take time to
know the people at an event -
don’t become a high-pressure
salesperson.
(Not being a social butterfly, I
tend to find more informal
one-on-one networking easier.)
3. Become involved as a volunteer
in your community and your
profession. This is a great way to
give back and to be visible. This
could include being a volunteer
in your professional
organization. The Midwest
Chapter would love to have each
of you be more active and it is a
great way to get to know other
member’s practices and to gain
additional referral sources.
In St. Louis, I have been known
in the past as a professional
volunteer and always gain much
more than I give.
4. Have a clear understanding of
what you do and why, for whom,
and what makes your practice
stand out among the rest. Have
your “branding” speech on the
tip of your tongue and be able to
articulate this clearly.
I am not sure that I am always as
clear as I would like to be, since I
am often “going with the flow” of
the Aging Life Care™ client’s
needs. I guess that I just need to
be clear, open and honest with the
people I am meeting and gear my
“elevator talk” to their needs and
questions. Examples are some-
times worth a thousand words.
5. Follow through efficiently on
referrals, requests for info,
billing, etc. Your actions reflect
that you are a competent,
organized care manager. Your
interactions with clients reflect
on the person who gave you the
referral; respect and honor this
and your referrals will grow.
That’s all from here for now - happy
networking.
And come up and talk with me at the
next event!
Judy
PRESIDENTIAL
MOMENTS BY DEBBIE FELDMAN
CHAPTER PRESIDENT 2013—2016
I hope that everyone had an
enjoyable summer and all of your
children are back in school working
hard.
We are about one month away from
our Annual Midwest Chapter
Conference, “The Aging Well
Tapestry…Weaving the Care
Together” being held in Chicago,
Illinois October 23-24, 2015. We
are very excited about the
conference and we will be having
our largest turnout in many years.
We truly hope that this will begin a
new trend for our chapter
conferences. I would like to thank
Kim Hand of Glenview, Illinois
ahead of time for her top notch
detailed organization on this
conference. I know it will be a huge
success.
The day prior to the conference the
Midwest Chapter Board will be
holding an in-person Board Meet-
ing. We will be putting together our
budget for 2016, as well as evaluat-
ing our accomplishments as they
pertain to our 2015 Strategic Plan.
In conjunction with the evaluation
of the 2015 Stratgic Plan, we will
develop our Strategic Plan for 2016.
Incorporated in the development of
our Strategic Plan will be discussion
on how to maintain and increase our
memberships as well as how to
increase member involvement in the
Units, in the Chapter and during
National ALCA events. We will
also be continuing to explore
merging our Chapter with National.
Our Nominations Committee,
headed by Annice Davis-White of
Overland Park, Kansas has worked
hard, with the assistance of the
Chapter Board to identify new lead-
ership for our Midwest Chapter.
The slate of candidates has been re-
leased and our election will be held
in early November. Please remem-
ber to vote. We need everyone’s
participation.
Our Chapter continues to offer
regular local Unit events throughout
the Midwest. Please take a look at
the list of Units and Unit Leaders
and contact a Unit closest to you.
This list can be found on the last
page of this newsletter.
Get involved, network with your
fellow ALCA members and attend
very informative educational events.
Our monthly Peer Case Conference
calls have been of great value to
those participating. The cases
presented have been challenging
and much is shared and learned.
What a valuable means to grow
your knowledge base to maximize
your talents when it comes to caring
for your clients. We all can learn
from each other particularly when
we are working with very
challenging clients and families.
Mark your calendar for 3:00 p.m.
central time, the third Wednesday of
each month and look for the
E-Blasts inviting you to participate
on the call.
Get involved! You will grow not
only as an Aging Life Care
Professional™ but personally too.
See you October 23, 2015
in The Windy City.
All the Best,
Debbie
