“23But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and

but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

(1 Corinthians 1:23 & 24)

Dear friends in Christ,

We are deluged with all sorts of messages every day. Some messages entice us to buy a product, use a service, or consume a food. Some messages attempt to change our view point, or the way we think about a particular issue or topic. Some messages are intended to shock us. Some messages attempt to sooth us. Some messages even leave us guessing: “What are they trying to sell?”

In a day and age where the unwritten but culturally enforced rule of “political correctness” is supposed to bring people together, the actual result has deeply polarized the different segments of our society into entrenched attitudes designed to protect the interests, territory and goals of each. People or groups take offense at even the slightest remark or innocent comment, accusing others of being narrow-minded, insensitive, or even ignorant. The practice of personal destruction has become the

norm rather than the exception. As a result, people are afraid to speak their minds or present their messages for fear of alienating someone, being sued, suffering a destroyed reputation, or the like.

This way of thinking even impacts the church. The church no longer speaks with a clear, unified, Scripturally-based voice on the many sinful behaviors and lifestyles so commonly accepted within culture and society. We operate out of fear. We do not want to offend so we ignore. We do not want to call unwelcome attention so we blend in. We are afraid of persecution so we avoid. Pastors are encouraged to preach messages that leave people feeling good about themselves, and to avoid talking about sin - instead of “speaking the truth in love.” Calling people to repentance for their sinfulness, and pointing them to a savior who died on a cross to take sin away is unpopular. Some congregations even encourage their pastors to avoid preaching about money for fear of “giving the wrong impression” and chasing someone away. Christians are afraid to share their faith because they might “step on someone’s toes” or be accused of being narrow-minded, insensitive, ignorant or even unloving. Some churches have removed the symbol of the cross from their places of worship in order not to give offense because some view the cross as a symbol of blood and violence.

Even as we experienced Good Friday, and celebrated the saving work of Jesus Christ, we are also reminded of the words and actions of St. Paul and the other apostles. They concerned themselves with demonstrating the life-changing power of the Gospel and sharing the message of the life-giving sacrifice of Jesus Christ on a cross in the face of a hostile world. They preached the Word of truth in love, and trusted the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of those who listened.

They were not worried about whether or not people liked them (they were thrown out of many towns). They were not worried about their wealth or position in society (they lost their jobs and status). They were not worried about whether or not it was legal (they were imprisoned many times). They were not worried about whether or not their message was popular (they were stoned by those who did not like what they were saying). They did not worry about whether or not they were being politically correct (they were executed for their beliefs). They were simply faithful to the Cross of Christ, to God’s graceful call to do the good works which He had prepared in advance for them to accomplish. They loved and cared for people, they preached the Gospel of Christ Crucified to a sinful and dying world, and they entrusted their very lives and their eternal salvation to their Savior.

In so many ways, we face the same obstacles, the same sinful culture, the same rejections those in the early church faced! We, like they were, are also equipped with the power of the same Holy Spirit and the same Holy Gospel. We continue to preach Christ Crucified, and we still have one Faith, one Hope and one Baptism! Let us not operate out of fear Let us, rather, go out into the world boldly — in the same way as those who so faithfully walked in ages past. Let us proclaim the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ in our culture and our world today!

Pastor Neal Groeling

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 3

Some Call It Coincidence… I Call It God-incidence

Over the course of the past several months, the East Albuquerque Mission, God Cares About You, watched as their Friday Youth Ministry Program increased in participants. The program continues to grow. The constant growth brought on the realization that for the program’s continued success, the mission needed a person who could speak and translate Swahili. With that realization, the question of where to find such a special person with the gift of language, as well as the gift of outreach arose. God heard our question in our prayers and sent us the answer. Five weeks ago, Antoine Gispre visited Christ Lutheran. Antoine speaks Swahili and several other African languages.

Ralph Hughes, our Missions Board Chair, and active volunteer at GCAY, was ushering at church several weeks ago, and the first to meet Antoine. I think when Ralph met Antoine, he knew that Antoine was at church for a reason. Antoine had just recently learned about God Cares About You from another GCAY Board member. At that time he did not know that Christ Lutheran supported the mission, but God led him to our church to worship.

Antoine has worshipped with us ever since. Using his language gifts and wonderful personality he is also becoming involved with GCAY. He has been a blessing to us and I hope through God’s love, we are a blessing to him. You may call this coincidence – I call it God-incidence! Finding somebody to help at GCAY who speaks Spanish in Albuquerque seems logical to me. For a person who speaks and translates Swahili, who also wants to help at the mission, to show up at our church, is beyond logic to me. Antoine is a blessing bestowed to us purely by God. Not a coincidence, a God-incidence!

I think back a few years when I was enlisted as a substitute chaperone for a District Youth Gathering in Fort Collins. While there, doing some bathroom duties, I saw a reach out for Stephen Ministry for their Congregation. I knew of this Ministry (my Mom had been very active in it) but had never thought of it for our Congregation. This time, at a Youth Gathering it shouted out off the wall to me.

Since then we have had 6 Stephen Leaders trained, 5 other Stephen Ministers complete training, and now an additional 4 Stephen Ministers are beginning training. Let me put that into a greater perspective. By this summer between Leadership training, Minister training and Peer Supervision and Continuing Education, 15

I have a jar of sprinkles on my

desk. They are sugar and are

pretty to look at, but mostly they remind me that

everyone needs a handful of sprinkles every

once in a while. A good friend of mine likes to

say, “Every day is a good day, but some are

better than others.” He’s right of course,

because every day is “This Day.” This is the day

that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be

glad in it.” – Psalm 118:24. The sprinkles are

for those not so great days. You know which

ones I’m talking about, the days where you can’t

seem to find your smile no matter how hard you

look, the days where nothing seems to go right.

Sometimes, when I know a student is having

one of those days, I will sneak a shake or two of

sprinkles into their hand. I tell them that the

sprinkles will make them feel better because

they are a special treat for when you need them

the most. The sprinkles don’t make problems

go away, but they do remind us that we are

loved. They remind us that even in the midst of

a rough patch, God is always there with a

special blessing or two, just to remind us of His

grace.

The month of April is sprinkled with some

exciting activities for Christ Lutheran School.

Spring break and our celebration of Easter is at

the end of March and beginning of April. First

grade – Eighth grade will be taking achievement

tests this month. Goodies with Grandparents is

scheduled for April 13th from 8:45 – 9:30.

Grandparents are invited to join K-4th grades in

the Parish hall for a light snack and to read a

book. We have the Spring Jubilee coming up on

April 27th at 7:00 pm for 2’s - first grade! Mark

your calendars now, it will be an awesome

event!

I still have sprinkles on my desk. So if you are

ever having one of those days, and you have a

chance to stop by my office, I will gladly share

some sprinkles with you to remind you to rejoice

in every day!

In Christ,

Kimberly Rasmussen

Weekly offering needed to meet His mission within Christ Lutheran (Mar 2018 - July 2018) - $9445

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past November, President Jerry Shroff communicated that “going forward we must as a congregation” take action

for our church to thrive in the future. He challenged all of us to focus on growing our school enrollment, increase our

church membership and attendance, embrace our core mission and outreach, and refocus our emphasis on

stewardship.

Commitment Sunday and the reinstitution of the pledge process was an initial step toward this challenge. Thank you to

all who participated in this important pledge event. Our congregation has once again shown sincere and generous

commitment to the many missions at Christ Lutheran.

Offerings and school income provide 97% of the funds used to finance these varied and valuable missions. Randy

Bennett, our treasurer, pointed out last month we do not receive school income in June and July. As we approach the

end of this fiscal year, we continue to face the challenge of a budget deficit. Your continued support in service to the

Lord, offerings, SCRIP purchases, Thrivent Choice designations, and prayers will ensure we meet this challenge.

God’s Blessings,

Tom Hebblewhite

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 5

Rejoice! He is alive!

Alleluia! Christ has triumphed!

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

Alleluia! Christ is living!

We have fifty days in the Easter season to celebrate

the miracle of Christ’s resurrection and all that means

for us. Because He arose we have the gift of eternal

life. Our sins have been forgiven. We proclaim that

forgiveness and His plan of salvation to the world so

they can share in the power of His resurrection. The

Holy Spirit, through the Word and Sacraments, grants

us the strength to speak the truth to others and show

His love to all around us.

The month of March was a very busy one for music

at CLC-S! I hope you got to enjoy some of the extra

efforts from our school and choirs. Bells and Choir

will continue to add special music to our services

during the Easter season. May God bless your

worship times here at Christ Lutheran!

“Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin,

and the power of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God!

He gives us the victory

through our Lord Jesus Christ.

NOTES FROM YOUR

MUSIC DIRECTOR

By Beth Shroff

FROM THE BOARD OF YOUTH March was an active month for the youth. They

hosted a game night with the students from middle

school. Usually 15 – 18 youth show up for these.

The youth performed in a concert for band at the

school. They also hosted a fellowship meal. This

gives them another opportunity to interact with the

congregation. They will be enjoying a well-deserved

vacation at the end of the month.

April will be a pretty busy month. We will be serving

breakfast on Easter Sunday. This is always a great

time of year as we celebrate the resurrection of our

Lord. The youth are very excited as Youth Quake is

finally here. This is pretty cool because none of our

middle schoolers have ever gone to an event like this.

Away from church, many of the youth are involved

with various athletics. Others are also involved with

Girl and Boy Scouts.

OPENING BIBLE VERSE: Lent is the season during which some people fast, not eating certain foods, or not eating for a period of time. Fasting is encouraged in Scripture. Through the prophet Isaiah, God speaks of another kind of fasting. “Is not this the fast that I choose: to lose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?” (Isaiah 58:6-7) If you’d like to fast in this way, come help us at God Cares About You Mission. No special talent required; just a loving, servant heart.

DEAR PARTNERS IN CHRIST: I would like to share a very special story about one of our devoted volunteers. When she came to us, she did not believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and she was addicted to drugs. She said that she chose drugs over her own son. When she came in through the gates, she said she felt the love and compassion of everyone at the Mission. She started attending the Bible studies on Thursdays and the back to work program on Tuesdays. Now, a little at a time, she’s learning about the Word and she comes to volunteer every time that we are here at the mission. Since then, she now has her son with her every weekend and she has been clean for about 3 years. The power of prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit, helped her turn her life around and regain the love of her son.

This is just one of the many stories that show how the power of the Holy Spirit and having Jesus Christ in our

hearts can help anyone who believes. Like this lady we all need to hand over the reins of our lives to our Lord Jesus Christ.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT:

If you would like to make a donation to GCAY Mission, please make your check payable to Christ Lutheran Church, in care of GCAY Mission. If you would like more information, please contact Lionel at 505-545-1837. Thank you in advance for your support.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, praise you for the gift of unity that the Spirit creates in our relationships. You place others perfectly in our lives and inspire us as Christians to work together with the gifts that we have been blessed with. We confess that honoring you through our work is not always at the forefront of our minds as we strive to meet our goals in life. In the spaces of our hearts that harbor envy and ambition, we prayerfully ask you to make room for humility and a servant attitude. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen! Liz

members of our congregation will have completed about 1,500 hours in training. This training will have taught them how to be more caring to those suffering in our congregation, school, and community.

We are also developing workshops on a variety of Stephen Ministry practices that we feel will be useful in the congregation. These workshops will be taught on a monthly rotating basis. We are developing a Stephen Ministry library where anyone in the congregation can borrow books assisting in grieving, walking with someone who is grieving, suffering from cancer or illness, divorce or family separation. We are well on our way to becoming a well-equipped Stephen Ministry congregation. Do I think this happened by accident? No. By God’s provision, motivation, and our acceptance of His Will – we know all this did not occur by chance. It is not a coincidence, it’s a God-incidence!

I think most of us, related in faith, can think of things like this happening in our lives. I can’t tell you how many crazy airline flights I have been on where I have been inspired by someone’s mission or outreach, and at other times I have cried and prayed with, or for, the passenger seated beside me.

I have seen it in my business, I have been placed in a setting where people experienced devastation of finances, or other losses, and I helped. I believe God put me there to help see these people through their tough time.

So that said, as we move out of the reflective time of Good Friday and Easter, be cognizant of things and people around you. They may be placed there as a blessing to you, or so that you can be used by God to be a blessing to them. So step out of your comfort zone box.

Visit the Mission. Go to one of our Stephen Ministry workshops. Come to Fellowship meals. See if Kim needs some volunteers at the school. Join in on a weekly small group, Bible Study or Fellowship activity. Step out of your comfort zone box and lean on Jesus’s Love!!! You never know when God has a God-incidence waiting just for you.

God’s Peace,

Jerry

Weekly Scripture Readings & Sermon Summaries April 2018

April 1, 2018 – The Resurrection of Our Lord – Easter Day

Psalm: 16; Epistle: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Gospel: Mark 16:1-8. “The Cli-mactic Event” - Sermon Text: Mark 16:1-8 - Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege. Every human being is under the curse of death. To overcome this curse, God's prophets predicted the Savior would come and die for sin and rise from the dead. His resurrection is a (if not THE) climactic event in mankind's histo-ry. Through this climactic event God's people are given resurrection and eternal life. Consistent with His ways, God conveys this wondrous victory through His Word and Sacraments.

April 8, 2018 – Second Sunday of Easter

Psalm: 148; Epistle: 1 John 1:1-9; Gospel: John 20:19-31. “Complete East-er Joy?” - Sermon Text: 1 John 1:4 - Rev. Dr. Thomas Ahlersmeyer. Need a little more joy in your life? Jesus’ resurrection shows us Truth and con-nects us with others. That’s Complete Easter Joy!

April 15, 2018 – Third Sunday of Easter

Psalm: 30:1-5; Epistle: 1 John 3:1-7; Gospel: Luke 24:36-49. “Easter’s Good News” - Sermon Text: Luke 24:36-49 - Rev. James Elsner. We now live in an age of information. News of events locally, nationally, and from around the world are brought to us as they happen. But, is there any “good” news? The resurrection of Jesus is GOOD News – and more!

April 22, 2018 – Fourth Sunday of Easter

Psalm: 23; Epistle: 1 John 3:16-24; Gospel: John 10:11-18. “Jesus, the Good Shepherd” - Sermon Text: John 10:11-18 - Rev. William Mueller. We treasure the picture of Jesus the Good Shepherd. He’s holding little lambs in His arms protecting and caring for them. We are those lambs. In John 10 Jesus gives us the reasons why we can be so sure and certain about His “Good Shepherd” status. He has authority to do what He does and He cares for us – even to give His life for us.

April 29, 2018 – Fifth Sunday of Easter

Psalm: 150; Epistle: 1 John 4:7-21; Gospel: John 15:1-8. “Love by God” - Sermon Text: John 4:15-19 - Rev. Dr. Walter Maier III. God loves us! It is amazing that He does, since we are sinful human beings, and were by na-ture His enemies. More than that, God’s love for us has a wonderful multi-faceted goal.

CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 12

Krysta Kees is an amazingly talented volleyball player, her position is outside hitter. She began playing at the YMCA when she was 5, then moved to the Albuquerque Rebels

Volleyball Club where she has played on national competitive teams the last 6 years. Her plans are to continue playing for ARVC and at Sandia High School. She hopes to earn a

college scholarship somewhere in Texas, Oklahoma, or Nebraska. She also earned a spot in a USA Olympic Training Camp last summer. Her family is so proud of her in so many

ways. Krysta was led to Christ Lutheran with God’s guidance after spending two weeks in the public school system in kindergarten. On the same day of their initial visit to CLC-S,

with the guidance of Mr. von Soosten, Mrs. Blea, and Mrs. Burmeister, Krysta was enrolled in kindergarten and she and her family have never looked back. Krysta has thrived in

education, faith, and friendships. Krysta will attend Sandia High School. After college she wishes to pursue a career as a spy in either the FBI or the CIA.

Sean McEvoy has been a student at Christ Lutheran for 6 years. While at Christ Lutheran Sean liked having the same group of friends year after year, and liked getting to know

everyone really well. He will be attending Sandia High School next year. He enjoys playing baseball; his favorite position is catcher. He also enjoys running and going to the

batting cages during his free time. This summer he will be traveling across the state of Texas with his father. This two week road trip will begin at the border of Texas and Louisiana, and

finish near El Paso. After high school, Sean plans to attend New Mexico Tech in Socorro. He would like to be a Structural Engineer or an Industrial Hygienist.

Mary Desmond is 14 years old and has been a student at Christ Lutheran since pre-school. Mary is awaiting acceptance to Sandia Prep, where she wishes to attend high school. She would like to be part of the dance team, and be involved in theatre. She plans to focus on math and science to help her with her future career as a Pediatric Surgeon. In her free time, Mary enjoys hanging out

with her friends, and playing volleyball.

Steven Peterson is 14 years old and has been attending Christ Lutheran since kindergarten. He was accepted to St. Pius X for high school. Most likely he will be moving to Boise, Idaho where he will attend Bishop Kelly High School. Steven enjoys playing football, basketball, rugby, and running track. Steven’s goal is to attend the University of Oregon where he will play football for

the Ducks. Following college he is interested in pursuing a career in Physical Therapy.

Donna Begay has been a student at Christ Lutheran for 3 years. She plans on attending Hope Christian for high school. She enjoys hanging out with her friends and competing in Rodeos. She excels at barrel racing, roping, and tying goats, and has won many saddles and buckles. Later this year she plans on winning the state competition for the New Mexico Junior High Rodeo Association. This summer she plans to rodeo, and have fun at Cliff’s Amusement

Park. She will cherish the friends she has made, and the teachers she has had at Christ Lutheran.

Stay tuned for next month’s Chronicle to read about the rest of our graduating students!

Christ Lutheran Chronicle

The Chronicle is published for members and friends of Christ Lutheran Church & School. News items and articles are due in the church office on

the 15th of the month prior to the month in which you wish to be published. Your submission may be edited for content or length.

Thank you for your participation and cooperation!

The details for the senior fellowship outing in April have not been finalized as of the printing of this newsletter. We will communicate the April plans in the church bulletin, as well as in the announcements.

For more information call: Lee Swanger (294-6752) or Eunice Hoeft (889-9705).

Christ Lutheran Women’s Guild/LWML

What is the Christ Lutheran Women’s Guild up to this month? Vespers and New Beginnings continue to meet for Bible study, the Quilting Group is going strong and the Garden Committee is at work in the Garden.

We are also hosting a Fellowship Meal on April 11th to raise funds for Mites. Please come join us for a homemade potluck dinner. I know the food will be amazing- we have wonderful cooks in our congregation. We will have LWML items that can be “purchased” with a mite donation. In the March Chronicle I shared the LWML’s ongoing emphasis on Mites and some of the mission grant projects funded by Mite offerings.

The LWML also has an emphasis on caring for the needs of others. This is accomplished through hands on service events, mission trips, quilting and a variety of other pro-jects. At each Rocky Mountain District Convention, a mis-sion emphasis is selected and items are gathered to give to a local group. In the past we have collected school sup-plies and backpacks, or items for care packages for service men and women. This year when we gather in Boulder, Colorado we have been asked to bring baby layette kits.

The District has requested complete layette kits. Each kit includes a blanket, receiving blanket, onesie, sleeper, new bottle, new pacifier, baby wipes, diapers, and a mustard seed devotion. Sizes should be newborn to 6 months. We will be gathering items at the April 11th Fellowship Meal. To ensure that we don’t end up with 20 pacifiers and no onesies, a sign up sheet will be in the narthex. We would like to make 6-10 kits. The blankets will be made by our quilters and others and are the most labor intensive part of the kit. If you would like to make a blanket, or help finish blankets, please contact Debbie Yocky.

Please join us on April 11th for a great time of fun, food and fellowship. Come learn more about the LWML Mites and Human Care Projects.

Man or Woman - Stephen Ministry Can Help

What kind of man would receive the care of a

Stephen Minister?

A man like ADAM, who was cut off from all that gave

meaning to life and needed someone to remind him of

God’s promises.

A man like MOSES, who faced great opposition and

needed a companion to support and speak on his

behalf.

A man like PETER who found himself in over his head

and needed the strong hand of a faith person.

A man like YOU.

What kind of woman would receive the care of a

Stephen Minister?

A woman like RUTH who left everything that was

familiar to her and needed someone to journey with her

in her new life.

A woman like MARTHA who was burdened by the

demands of daily life and needed someone to help her

regain sight of what was important.

A woman like MARY MAGDALENE who

received healing from inner turmoil and

needed someone to walk with her as

she built a new life.

A woman like YOU.

We have made a reservation at the Egg & I for our April meeting. Our reservation is for Thursday, April 12 at 11:45 a.m. Please join us if you are 55 or older, enjoy a menu with a variety of lunch dishes, and enjoy the Christian fellowship of other ladies. You do not have to be a member of Christ Lutheran to attend. Call Eunice at 889-9705 or Marcia at 271-1287 if you need a ride or have questions.
