Eleven (11) slope inclinometers (SI08-1, SI08-6, SI08-7, SI08-9, SI10-10R, SI08-13, SI08-17 to SI08-19, SI08-21, SI08-22,), twenty six (26) pneumatic piezometers (PN08-1 to PN08-8, PN08-10, PN08-11, PN08-13, PN08-17, PN08-18A, PN08-18B, PN08-19 to PN08-22, PN09-1A, PN09-2A, PN09-2B, PN09-3A, PN09-3B, PN09-10R, PN09-23A and PN09-23B), eighteen (18) standpipe piezometers (TH08-3, TH08-5 to TH08-7, TH06-5, SP08-13, PH08-1, PH08-2, PH08-4, PH08-5, PH08-9 to PH08-15, and PH08-17) were read at the Hwy 63:10 Truck Staging Area (TSA) site on June 1 and June 2, 2015 by Mr. Chad Gray, C.E.T., of Thurber Engineering Ltd. (Thurber). SI08-6 is broken at 0.6 m below ground surface.

Nine (9) slope inclinometers (SI11-12R, SI12-15R, SI08-16, SI11-24, and SI12-25 to SI12-29), four (4) pneumatic piezometers (PN08-12, PN08-14, PN08-15, and PN08-16) and fifteen (15) vibrating wire piezometers (VW11-12RA, VW11-12RB, VW12-15RA, VW12-15RB, VW11-24A, VW11-24B, VW12-25A, VW12-25B, VW12-26, VW12-27A, VW12-27B, VW12-28A, VW12-28B, VW12-29A and VW12-29B) have been monitored by Tetratech during the west berm construction and were not read during this monitoring event. SI08-16 was sheared off during construction. VW11-24A and VW11-24B are currently non-operational.

The SIs were read using a RST Digital Inclinometer probe with 2 ft wheelbase and a RST Pocket PC readout. Inclinometer reading depths were defined as per cable markings with respect to the top of the inclinometer casing. The pneumatic piezometers were read using a RST C108 pneumatic piezometer reader. The flow rates of the sub-horizontal drains were also recorded during this monitoring event.

2. INTERPRETATION

2.1 Zones of Movement

Zones of movement are summarized in Table NC70-1 at the end of this report. This table also provides a historical account of the total movement, the depth of movement, and the maximum rate of movement that has occurred at this site since the initialization of the slope inclinometers.

2.2 Interpretation of Monitoring Results

2.2.1 East Slide

Slope inclinometers SI08-1 and SI08-19 continued to show no discernible movement. SI08-7 showed a rate of movement of 0.8 mm/yr over 6.6 m to 7.9 m depth and no discernible movement over 12.1 m to 14.0 m depth. SI08-17 showed no discernible movement since the fall 2014 readings. SI08-18 showed a creep rate of movement of 0.1 mm/yr and 1.2 mm/yr over 6.2 m to 8.0 m depth and 11.7 m to 14.1 m depth, respectively. SI08-21 showed a creep rate of movement of 0.1 mm/yr over 7.9 m to 11.0 m depth and no discernible movement over 28.1 m to 29.3 m depth.

In general, the groundwater surface levels increased in the majority of the piezometers.

The variation in groundwater levels recorded in the pneumatic piezometers installed within the east slide area ranged from a decrease of less than 0.1 m in PN08-1 to an increase of 1.12 m in PN08-21. Groundwater levels remained unchanged in PN08-2 and PN08-5 since the previous readings in fall 2014.

The variation in groundwater levels recorded in the standpipe piezometers installed within the east slide area ranged from a decrease of 0.2 m in PH08-1 to an increase of 0.5 m in TH08-6. Groundwater levels remained unchanged in TH08-3 and TH06-5.

2.2.2 West Slide

2.2.2.1 Slope Inclinometer and Piezometer Readings

Slope inclinometer SI08-9 showed creep rates of movement of 0.9 mm/yr and 3.7 mm/yr over 12.4 m to 13.7 m depth and 14.3 m and 16.1 m depth, respectively. SI10-10R showed creep rates of movement of 0.9 mm/yr, 0.3 mm/yr, and 1.6 mm/yr over 11.7 m to 14.1 m depth, 22.7 m to 23.9 m depth, and 24.5 m to 25.7 m depth, respectively. SI08-13 showed no discernible

Page 3: ALBERTA TRANSPORTATION NORTH CENTRAL REGION – …...Eleven (11) slope inclinometers (SI08-1, SI08-6, SI08-7, SI08-9, SI10-10R, SI08-13, SI08-17 to ... respect to the top of the inclinometer

movement over 5.1 m to 8.8 m depth and a creep rate of movement of 0.3 mm/yr over 13.0 m to 14.9 m depth. SI08-22 showed no discernible movement over 33.5 m to 35.3 m depth.

In general, the groundwater surface levels increased in the majority of the piezometers.

The variation in groundwater levels recorded in the standpipe piezometers installed within the west slide area ranged from a decrease of 0.06 m in PH08-2 to an increase of 1.77 m in PH08-12.

The variation in groundwater levels recorded in the pneumatic piezometers installed within the west slide area ranged from a decrease of 3.66 m in PN09-23A to an increase of 0.35 m in PN09-2B. PN08-11, PN09-1A, PN09-2A and PN09-23B continued to show above ground water levels.

The deep pneumatic piezometers installed in the sandstone aquifer below the truck staging area pad continued to show relatively unchanged below groundwater levels since the installation of subhorizontal drains. However, the deep pneumatic piezometers installed in the clayshale formation below the truck staging area pad continued to show above groundwater levels ranging from 5.06 m in PN09-2A to 11.62 m in PN09-23B. During this monitoring event, the groundwater level remained the same in PN09-2A and decreased by 0.07 m in PN09-23B.

2.2.2.2 Sub-horizontal Drains Flow Rates

One subhorizontal drain (subdrain #15) was flowing in MH#2 at 0.59 L/min. Nine (9) of the MH#1 drains were flowing at a total flow rate of 2.06 L/min. The total flow rate increased by 0.87 L/min since the previous monitoring event in the fall of 2014.

3. RECOMMENDATIONS

3.1 Future Work

The instruments should be read again in fall 2015. Consideration should be given for flushing the sub-horizontal drains in MH#1, MH#2, and sub-drain pipes connected to MH#4. Frequent maintenance of drainage improvement measures is essential to reduce the likelihood of plugging the drains, which would result in a rise in groundwater level and potential accelerated landslide movements.

3.2 Instrumentation Repairs

No instrument repairs are required at this time.
