Becoming an Alberta Certified Journeyperson is an exciting experience! As an apprentice you learn from a certified tradesperson and spend 4-12 weeks per year in technical training at a college or technical institute. This combination of on-the-job and technical training helps to build a solid foundation a rewarding career in the trades.
The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board, in partnership with industry and the Government of Alberta, created the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Family of Scholarships. These scholarships are designed to recognize the excellence of Alberta apprentices and trainees like you and encourage you to continue and complete your apprenticeship or occupational training. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of employer recommendation and technical training marks.
You could be eligible for a scholarship – apply today!
The background
Since 2002, joint contributions from industry members and the Government of Alberta have created scholarships for registered apprentices as well as those graduating from the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) high school program, the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) apprenticeship pathways or pre-apprenticeship programs. The number of scholarships continues to grow every year.
Do you qualify for a scholarship?
You may qualify for one or more scholarships if you have taken apprenticeship technical training in the last year and have at least one period of technical training left (some exceptions apply) or you have successfully completed a recognized pre-apprenticeship program or you were a RAP apprentice or a CTS apprenticeship pathways student. Download your scholarship application form at tradesecrets.alberta.ca or head to your nearest Apprenticeship and Industry Training office to pick up an application form today. Hard copies of the application can also be picked up at your institution’s Registrar’s or Student Awards office. The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.

The Alberta Construction Association is proud to sponsor the ACA/Thygesen Apprentice scholarships in the continued pursuit of excellence in the Alberta construction industry.
The ACA leads Alberta’s construction industry in government advocacy, public relations, industry practices and partnerships, and promotion of a skilled workforce.
Membership is comprised of over 1,700 general contractors, trade contractors, manufacturers and suppliers.
The Alberta Construction Association worked in partnership with Jake Thygesen in 2001 to promote apprenticeship through these scholarships. By 2002, enough funds were raised to start what has become the ACA/Thygesen Scholarships. Mr. Thygesen passed away in 2003. Since then, ACA has continued to share fundraising efforts with his family.

Welcome! I am pleased to present the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training
Board Family of Scholarships booklet. With the help of our industry partners, the
Board is delighted to be able to offer such a dynamic scholarship program to the
apprentices in Alberta. Scholarships are an integral component in recognizing
excellence in apprenticeship.
These scholarships are an investment in Alberta’s skilled workforce. Donors play a
vital role in assisting apprentices with further development in their trade or
occupation while providing added incentive to young people considering a career
in the trades.
Please take the time to read about our scholarship categories, and if you are an
apprentice with more training to attend, be sure to apply!
Visit tradesecrets.alberta.ca for applications and up-to-date news on scholarships.
Applications are also available at any Apprenticeship and Industry Training office or
at your institution’s Registrar’s or Student Awards office. Remember to apply by

Invest in Alberta’s Skilled Workforce
Create a Scholarship! The purpose of the Alberta Apprenticeship
and Industry Training Board Family of
Scholarships is to recognize excellence in
apprenticeship and industry training. You can
help ensure Alberta has a skilled workforce
by making a corporate donation.
Your contribution is a long-term investment in
Alberta’s skilled workforce. You play a vital
role in assisting apprentices with further
development in their trade or occupation
while providing added incentive to young
people considering a career in the trades.
Your support of the scholarship program
enhances the profile of the trades and
occupations by putting them on par with
other careers. As a donor, you also receive
public recognition through our website and
print publications.
Fundraising
1. For each donation of $20,000 you can create a $1,000 named
scholarship in perpetuity OR with a donation of $30,000 you
can create a Top Apprentice scholarship valued at $1,500 in
perpetuity.
100% of your donation is used directly for the scholarship. All
administration costs are provided by the Government of
Alberta. Scholarship contributions are gifts to the Crown and
may be eligible for tax deductions/credits.
2. You set the eligibility criteria. For example, a scholarship can be
designated for apprentices in a particular trade/occupation or
for apprentices working in a particular region/city of the
province. You can choose to name the scholarship so if you
have a leader in your industry you wish to honour, name a
scholarship for the person.
How it works.

In 2008, the Alberta Apprenticeship
and Industry Training Board created
a new category of scholarships. The
Board identified that apprentices
should be encouraged to do their
best in apprenticeship training
throughout their time in the system,
including those who have started in
pre-apprenticeship training. The
Board decided that encouragement
should be given to people who take
the initiative to enter a pre-
apprenticeship program to help
prepare themselves for the workplace
and technical training.
EligibilityPre-apprentices who have recently graduated from a recognized pre-apprenticeship training program are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Eligible pre-apprenticeship programs must include at least four weeks (120 hours) of trades-related instruction, not including any work experience component. Visit tradesecrets.alberta.ca to download a copy of the pre-apprentice scholarship application. The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.
There are 11 pre-apprenticeship scholarships, each with a value of $1,000. Scholarship recipients can claim their scholarship upon enrollment in their first or next period of technical training.

Through the delivery of multi-craft maintenance agreements for long term and shot term/intermittent plant maintenance work, the General Presidents’ Maintenance Committee and the National Maintenance Council for Canada provides work opportunities for building trades union members in a wide variety of industries in Alberta and across Canada.
The Committee is pleased to work with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training in the delivery of 2 scholarships each year for construction and maintenance apprentices. The development of craft skills in the Alberta work force is important to the unionized contract maintenance industry and the continuing economic health of the Province.

Scholarship donors expressed
a wish to recognize apprentices
with very high achievement
in their technical training
and a strong employer
recommendation. In 2008,
the Alberta Apprenticeship
and Industry Training Board
created the Top Apprentice
Scholarships to reward these
outstanding apprentices.
EligibilityApprentices do not apply for the Top Apprentice Scholarships. The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board determines the top apprentice for each scholarship based on apprentices’ technical training marks and other criteria set forth by the donor. Successful apprentices will automatically be awarded the scholarship and notified by mail.
The 21 Top Apprentice Scholarships listed here have a value of $1,500 each. Scholarship recipients can claim their scholarships upon enrollment in their next period of technical training.

Where can I get a scholarship application form? All three (RAP/CTS, AIT and Pre-Apprentice) application forms are available at any one of our Apprenticeship and Industry Training offices (see page 51 for a list of our offices, and find the one nearest you), at the institution where you took your apprenticeship technical training or online at tradesecrets.alberta.ca. If you are currently a RAP student in high school graduating this year, a RAP/CTS application was mailed directly to you.
When is the scholarship application deadline? The deadline to apply for scholarships is June 30.
When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship? All recipients will receive notification by mail by November 1.
Does it take a long time to apply for a scholarship? Not at all. The application form takes just minutes to fill out. Be sure to fill out the correct application form for the scholarships you are applying for (RAP/CTS, AIT or Pre-Apprentice). If you are a CTS apprenticeship pathways student, be sure to include a certified copy of your Record of Courses Completed form. For all other applicants, make sure you have your employer fill out the employer recommendation form. Sign your documents. If you follow the handy checklist provided in each application form, you should be done fairly quickly. Send the completed application to the address provided on the back of the application form.
Can I apply for a specific AIT scholarship? No. We have simplified the process for you. There is one AIT application form. Fill it out and you will be considered for every AIT scholarship where you meet the minimum criteria. (Remember you still have to fill out separate application forms for Pre-Apprentice scholarships and RAP/CTS scholarships).
I was a RAP student but I didn’t apply for a RAP scholarship. Can I apply for one now that I’ve graduated high school?Yes. If you were a RAP student in high school and never received a RAP scholarship, you can apply for a RAP/CTS scholarship as long as you have at least one period of technical training left to complete. More information on eligibility is listed on the application form.
Can I be awarded more than one scholarship?Yes, but generally you are only awarded one scholarship per year. You can only receive a RAP/CTS scholarship once.
Do I receive scholarship money as soon as I am awarded the scholarship? No. In order to receive your scholarship money you must be attending your next period of technical training. The Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board is notified once you start your next period of technical training and will initiate the payment process.
I am planning to challenge my next period technical training exam without attending the technical training. Do I still receive my scholarship? No. Scholarship money can only be given to recipients who attend their next period of technical training. Challenging an exam does not constitute having attended technical training.
How are scholarship recipients selected? Selection of scholarship recipients is made by a committee established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board. Recipients are selected on the basis of their marks, a description about themselves, an employer recommendation and, for a few scholarships, financial need.
How long do I have to claim my scholarship money? You have up to 5 years from the time you were notified of your scholarship to take technical training and claim your scholarship.
What if I have more questions? Please visit tradesecrets.alberta.ca and click on “Financial Assistance”. You can also contact Alberta Scholarship Programs regarding the status and payment of your scholarship by calling 780-427-8640 or emailing [email protected].
