Yoga Classes Continue this Summer…Don’t take a “vacation” from this healthy practice.
SIT AND GET FIT CHAIR YOGA
ALL-LEVELS KRIPALU YOGA
Dance and exercise classes for seniors abound in the capital district. Everything from Zumba Gold to ballroom and folk dancing. I have tried some of them and they are fun, but currently I have found my niche in Gentle Ballet.
I could not believe my eyes when I read in the OASIS schedule last year that a class called Gentle Ballet was being offered to seniors. For years I
had entertained the idea of taking ballet classes as a way of gracefully improving my posture, but where did I fit in with little kids, or bigger kids for that matter?
Now that I am a real big kid, my wish is being fulfilled. Once a week for an hour, I go to Gail’s class at Albany Dance and Fitness on Central Avenue to rejuvenate my body and mind. The sounds of the lilting piano music emanating from the CD are enough to make me want to stand a bit taller and, hmm…rise to the occasion. And watching Gail’s gracefulness as she shows us the steps is a treat in itself. First position, second position, third. Arms over the head, a gentle stretch, a demi-plie.
No, we haven’t been offered a contract at SPAC, I haven’t seen a tutu yet, and my pirouettes are non-existent, but I do love my gentle ballet lessons.
